7 Restaurants With Gluten-Free Options in Asheville, North Carolina

7 Restaurants With Gluten-Free Options in Asheville, North Carolina

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Asheville is a city renowned for its vibrant arts scene, historical architecture, and breathtaking natural landscapes. Established in the 1780s and flourishing as a therapeutic health resort in the late 19th century, Asheville has long been a destination for those seeking beauty and wellness. Today, this city is celebrated for its eclectic downtown, historic architecture like the iconic Biltmore Estate, the picturesque Blue Ridge Parkway, the artistic River Arts District, and a flourishing craft beer scene.

And amidst all these attractions, Asheville is also attuned to the dietary needs of its visitors and residents. With the rising awareness of celiac disease (an autoimmune condition in which the ingestion of gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and their hybrids, leads to damage in the small intestine) and gluten intolerance, or non-celiac gluten-sensitivity (a non-autoimmune condition in which gluten consumption causes sickness after eating), finding a good meal between taking in the sights has never been easier. (A happy fact for the roughly 1% of Americans with celiac and 6% with gluten intolerance.)

If you’re on a gluten-free diet, here are some of the top restaurants that are reported to have gluten-free menus or options in Asheville, North Carolina. (Remember to always alert your server to any dietary restrictions. Some of the venues listed here may not be safe for those with celiac or who are sensitive to cross-contamination. Be sure to call the restaurant ahead of time with any concerns.)

Play Airlines Review — 9 Things I Loved, Plus 2 I Didn’t

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

While reading a book about Anne Frank for a third grade assignment, my son asked if we could one day travel to see her diary and where she lived. With Europe already on the radar for a summer vacation and not wanting to miss my son’s window of interest, Amsterdam rose to the top of our travel list.

I zeroed in on Memorial Day week, hoping to avoid the very peak of tourist season, but flights were still about $1,200 per person. That’s when I found PLAY Air and boy am I glad I did.

The price was right and there was an opportunity to add on a few nights in Iceland. PLAY airlines hosted us for our trip and while I began our vacation with two skeptical tweens, we quickly became PLAY Air evangelists.

Play Airlines Review — Objective Review by a Frequent Flier

1. The Price

Let’s face it, flights make up a huge chunk of any travel budget. For us, flying a family of four to Europe was going to cost close to $5,000 and that was the lowest category of seats.

PLAY Air hangs its hat on being a low-cost, budget airline. With the PLAY Basic bundle, our flights would have cost $1,500 total, but that’s without any luggage which wasn’t realistic for us. PLAY charges for pretty much everything — carry-ons, checked bags, food and drinks, even the seat you choose. After adding in all of those costs, plus cancellation protection, our total was $2,500 — still a 50 percent savings compared to traditional airlines and money we could use on lodging, food, and tours. Flying with a budget airline definitely pays off with round-trip flights.

Booking well in advance and being more flexible with our dates could have saved us even more money. Living in the Midwest, we did need to travel to an airport PLAY served (more on that later), but we tacked on a weekend trip to see family to make it work.

2. Icelandic Treats

Flying PLAY, the Icelandic budget airline, makes you feel like you’ve been transported to a new destination as soon as you take a peek at the menu. It offers a variety of Icelandic selections and we made it our goal to try as many different items as possible. We thoroughly enjoyed the baguettes and wraps, the PLAY Air power meal, and especially all the sweets. We even washed them down with Icelandic soft drinks, beer, and wine.

Flight attendants heated items once we ordered them — not prior to starting service — a refreshing change from most airlines. When they were ready, the crew took extra care to offer any tips, like waiting a few minutes before mixing and digging into the PLAY Air power meal. I’m not sure if this actually made the food taste better or our taste buds were influenced by the added level of service, but we devoured everything we ordered.

3. Iceland Stopover

Iceland wasn’t on our itinerary until I realized every PLAY Air flight connects at Keflavik International Airport near Reykjavik. We decided to turn our layover into a stopover and spend 3 nights exploring the beautiful Golden Circle, South Coast, and a few of the amazingly relaxing hot springs in Iceland. We were able to experience two countries for the price of one since the stopover didn’t increase our ticket price. It was a tremendous bonus on top of our already reasonably priced flight.

Booking a stopover is currently not available online. You’ll need to call PLAY’s service team to help make the arrangements.

A word of warning: You’ll fall in love with Iceland! It’s simply gorgeous and we are already planning a return trip to drive the entire Ring Road.

4. Passport Control In Iceland

With all the planning that went into our vacation, it hadn’t crossed my mind that we’d need to go through passport control during our layover in Iceland. This turned out to be a great perk. Iceland is part of the Schengen Area, which allows travelers to move freely between certain countries. Once we landed, we were good to go, gaining an extra hour or 2 in our new destination rather than waiting in line again to get our passports checked. What a great use of our layover time!

5. Pleasant And Attentive Crew

I’ve been on many flights with good service, but there was something about PLAY’s employees that felt extra lovely.

Warm and welcoming smiles came from each and every person, there was perfectly pleasant cabin service where they made a point to be on the level of seated passengers when asking and answering questions, every message over the intercom started with “Dear passengers,” and the pilot announced we were flying over Greenland so we could take a look — specifically pointing out the glaciers and western mountains below.

There was a vibrant and special feel with nearly every touch-point from check-in to disembarkment. Happiness is one of PLAY’s core values and it comes through in their customer service.

6. No Frills

My sons’ first international flight came with all of the bells and whistles that basic economy offers when it comes to in-flight entertainment — TVs, Wi-Fi, and what felt like constant food and drink. While it was great (maybe not the Wi-Fi), we found when those amenities aren’t offered – they’re also not necessary for shorter international flights.

Both boys read two books on vacation between plane and train rides, plus I wasn’t stressed trying to get the Wi-Fi to work since it wasn’t an option — a forced break from my work which was much appreciated. Instead, we took time to talk about the trip, what we were most excited about during the outbound flight, and on the return, our favorite experiences, meals, and where to travel next.

However, one small downside to this lack of today’s technological marvels when you fly Play Air was the absence of power outlets in or close to the seats to charge your devices if you need in-flight entertainment of your own. The locations where U.S. airlines and transatlantic carriers typically put their power outlets were empty on this plane.

7. One Class

PLAY Air flies an Airbus A321NEO and A320NEO with three seats on each side of one main cabin. Depending on the plane, each flight can hold between 180 and 214 passengers. Personally, I love this set up. I’m not someone who enjoys having classes of seats and wondering if it’s really better on the other side of the curtain. This layout also seems to speed up the boarding process.

Once on the plane, the service was consistent throughout the cabin. There was never an issue of being left with limited food choices because our seats were near the rear.

The seats themselves were comfortable and we had enough space. The pitch of the seats — the distance from one point on a seat to the same spot on the seat in front of it — is 29–30 inches for standard seats and 32–35 inches for the extra legroom seats.

I was blessed with kids who can sleep pretty much anywhere, and I’m lucky enough to do that as well, but we never felt cramped and the seats laid back enough that we took a good snooze.

8. Branding

When you’re a low-cost airline, you need to own it and they do. Their “Pay less, Play more” slogan rings true. Having launched in 2019, they’re also taking a lead in sustainability by “tracking and reducing fuel consumption, offsetting carbon emissions, and limiting waste.”

I also love the choice of red for their livery and flight attendant uniforms. Full disclosure: It’s my favorite color, but it’s a nice, vibrant look in my opinion. Their uniforms also appear to be comfortable, nothing stuffy, which also set the tone for the relaxed, yet professional, nature of the flight with this budget airline.

9. You May See The Northern Lights

I must give a special shoutout to the PLAY’s crew who woke us up mid-flight to see the Northern Lights over the Greenland skies. I can’t guarantee you’ll be so lucky to get a glimpse of the Northern Lights on your PLAY Air flight, but it was a special moment.

The Northern Lights appear brighter thousands of feet high in the air than they do from the ground. You’ll also be able to see the little movements that the lights make. However, you will need to be on the right night flight as the lights are not visible during the day.

Pro Tip: To improve your chances of seeing the Northern Lights look for flights between November and the end of December. Flights to Iceland or Fairbanks, Alaska are good choices because the routes take you close to or over the Arctic Circle.

2 Things I Didn’t Love Flying PLAY Airlines

1. Size And Weight Of Every Bag Matters

With the understanding that this is important no matter which low-cost airline you fly, carefully reading PLAY’s size and weight requirements for luggage is imperative. While every airline has a box near the check-in counter that measures your carry-on bags, I’ve only been requested to use it once — when flying PLAY Air out of Baltimore. (Each one fit, by the way.)

My biggest concern here, and the reason it’s on my “don’t-love” list, is not having a way to weigh my bags when returning home. This wasn’t an issue leaving for our trip, but after I purchased too much cheese in Gouda and didn’t have a scale at the hotel, it was a bit nerve-wracking heading to the airport and not knowing if I was going to need to rearrange a few things during check-in. Obviously, there are important reasons behind the requirements, but if you tend to overpack or over-purchase on vacation, you may be paying extra at this low-cost airline check-in.

Need To Know

PLAY’s check-in counter opened 3 hours before our flights in Baltimore and Brussels, so if you like to give yourself more time at the airport, just know you’ll be waiting at check-in. In Iceland, you’re able to use the self-service kiosks to check in and print your boarding passes and bag tags. Check-in desks and baggage drop-off open at least 2 hours prior to departure and close 1 hour prior to departure at Keflavik Airport. However, gates were not assigned until about an hour before departure.

2. Service Exclusively From The East Coast

PLAY Air flies from five airports in the U.S. and Canada — Washington Dulles, Baltimore, New York Stewart, Boston Logan, and Toronto Hamilton — to more than 30 European destinations. Living in the Midwest, of course, I’d love for there to be a closer airport serviced by PLAY. While it was still cheaper to make our way to Baltimore and fly with them, it added a bit to the planning process. We ended up using it as an opportunity to spend Memorial Day weekend in Washington, D.C. with family before flying to Europe. Some compromise is expected with a budget airline.

“PLAY operates a hub-and-spoke model, a strategic decision using Iceland’s central location between our destinations,” said PLAY CEO Birgir Jónsson. “With a stopover in Iceland, we collect passengers from across the East Coast and other European destinations in Iceland for a short, easy connection, which enables us to fill flights and keep our prices low.”

PLAY’s flight dates and times are also limited compared to other airlines. However, having one departure a day felt oddly less stressful compared to having to choose from several options.

Pro Tip: If you plan a stopover in Iceland, we rented a car and found the country to be very easy to navigate. We used Blue Car Rental, which was a quick 5-minute walk from the terminal. Lotus Car Rental also came highly recommended. No matter who you rent with, get the full coverage and always pay attention to the weather. Iceland’s weather can change very quickly, dangerously so. Here’s a list of helpful apps to navigate an amazing stay in this wonderful country.

FAQs

How to Get a Refund on PLAY Airlines?

You must purchase cancellation protection available only at the time of booking. Otherwise, you won’t be refunded. Passengers who are unable to travel and have not purchased cancellation protection can only have the airport taxes of their unused ticket refunded.

What if PLAY Airlines Changes Your Flight Day or Time?

If a flight is canceled, passengers are entitled to rerouting or a refund of their ticket if the available rerouting options are not acceptable. PLAY Air is certificated in Iceland, a member state of the European Union, so all flights are subject to the European Passenger Rights Regulation.

Is There On-Flight Entertainment on PLAY Airlines?

No. This is a low-cost, budget airline, so don’t expect to watch newly released movies on a small display in front of you. If you get easily restless while flying, watching downloaded shows or listening to podcasts on your laptop or phone will have to do.

Should I Use The PLAY Airlines’s Extra-Legroom Option?

Yes. Opting for extra legroom is recommended if you don’t mind the added fee. It feels roomy, giving you 3 to 5 additional inches of space. PLAY Air has a 3-3 seat configuration where each seat has 29 to 30 inches of space.

Reviews

Bombas clothes are excellent additions to your closet and their reviews back that up. Their verified buyers say that the socks are comfortable and fit great. One purchaser, Amea, said this was their first pair of compression socks. They said that they’re very comfortable and work well with shoes and boots, without the fear of bunching uncomfortably as you go about your day. Even those who ordered the wrong size still noted how comfortable and soft they are, as some reviews note that the socks can sometimes run small.

Catering to a mature and sophisticated crowd, Fort Lauderdale is one of the premier warm places to visit in Florida in February. Enjoy high-end shopping, elegant cocktails, live music, and, of course, the beach. Water is the way of life in the “Venice of America,” dubbed so as it is built on a system of canal-like waterways. This brings in a luxurious yacht vibe, shiny hotels, and A-list restaurants.

Most of the activity hums around Las Olas Boulevard, which is flanked by high-end shopping and dining. Be sure to brunch at Big City Tavern, a local rite of passage. We hear the banana Nutella French toast is to die for.

Pro Tip: Traveling with kids? Disney World and the rest of Orlando’s theme parks can be reached in just a few hours by car.

Peppered with lagoons, luxury resorts, overwater bungalows, and sunsets that set the sky on fire, the Maldives are paradise. The best attractions in the Maldives truly are the A-list hotels, which are among the best in the world. One even has its own splurge-worthy restaurant that is underwater. But visitors will want to begin in the capital, Malé, which is the best place to see local life. Take in the vibrantly colored houses, the aromatic markets, and the culture at the National Museum.

Diving is an obvious attraction in a nation that is made up mostly of ocean space. Feeling adventurous? Try Hammerhead Point in the Rasdhoo Atoll for some of the best hammerhead diving. Rasdhoo Divers is a local dive shop that arranges tours to see the sharks.

For outdoor adventure in pleasantly warm places, there are few better destinations than the island of Kauai. Definitely not for resort lubbers, Kauai will dazzle anyone who lives for adventure, from helicoptering through emerald valleys and zip-lining through treetops to hiking to gushing waterfalls and zigzagging around imposing cliffs.

Begin your Kauai adventure by setting the scene with a Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour of the Waimea Canyon. Adventurists can also hike the 11-mile Kalalau Trail for an up-close and personal look at the rugged cliffs.

Pro Tip: Permits are required to hike the full trail. For a lower-impact experience, consider taking a dip at Poipu Beach Park or Kalapaki Beach.

Kauai’s natural environment has remained relatively undisturbed. No town surpasses 10,000 people and no building is taller than a coconut tree, which is mandated by law.

It truly is one of the great American cities with rich cultural heritage — a blend of Caribbean, African, and European influences that’s just about as American as it gets.

With so many warm weather places to whisk away to in Mexico, it can be almost impossible to choose! Look to Los Cabos this winter. Not only is it an absolutely stunning place where red rock desert meets deep blue sea, but new hotels are opening there left and right.

A couple of hotels that are worth your consideration are the Hard Rock Los Cabos and Nobu Hotel Los Cabos (a joint venture between famous Japanese chef Nobu Matsuhisa and actor Robert De Niro). Los Cabos is also developing the eastern side of the Baja Peninsula, known as East Cape, and a Four Seasons was opened there.

Los Cabos is an outdoor paradise. While many of the beaches are not suitable for swimming (because of the strong surf), there is jet-skiing, snorkeling, kitesurfing, diving, hiking, and more. Consider a visit to Cabo Pulmo National Park, a heaven for divers and one of the last few remaining boho beach escapes in this part of Baja California.

“Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island is a 47,000-acre park that is beautiful year-round. It has a 27-mile park loop with plenty of places to stop and enjoy the leaves and take photographs of the foliage.

“You can also visit the highest point along the East Coast at the park’s 1,527-foot Cadillac Mountain. You will have quite a view from there. Enjoy the leaves on maples and birches, along with a variety of evergreens. If you desire to get a bit of exercise, there are 120 miles of trails.

“You could spend a half or a whole day enjoying the colorful orange and red hues of nature in the park. The town of Bar Harbor is also fun with shops and many seafood restaurants. You could easily spend an entire weekend here.

“Spend the night in Bar Harbor at the Balance Rock Inn. It is a lovely hotel right on the water overlooking a secluded beach.” — Robin O’Neal Smith–

“The White Mountains of New Hampshire are probably the Granite State’s most famous spot for viewing fall foliage — for good reason. The scenic drive along the Kancamagus Highway is among the country’s most gorgeous areas for admiring blankets of bright orange, golden yellow, and fiery red leaves in autumn.

“If you’re looking for a fall RV vacation destination that might have slightly fewer visitors in September and October, consider the Lakes Region. This area in the central part of the state is home to Lake Winnepesaukee, New Hampshire’s largest body of water. Here you’ll also find scenic Squam Lakes, where On Golden Pond was filmed.

“Whether you’re driving around the lakes, strolling through small towns like Meredith or Wolfeboro, seeking out covered bridges, taking a scenic boat cruise, or exploring the hiking trails in the area’s mountains, you’ll likely be able to enjoy pretty changing leaves. Keep up with where and when leaves are peaking with the state tourist association’s online foliage tracker.” — Kara Williams

“I was raised on the New England coast and never miss an opportunity to visit. When I want an urban getaway that’s still close to the shore, I head to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, just 10 minutes from the state’s short-but-spectacular East Coast shoreline. With all its beautifully preserved historic architecture and walkable streets, Portsmouth is photogenic and easy to explore. It also has a vibrant arts, culture, and dining scene.

“Besides appreciating the fiery foliage, top fall activities include biking, hiking, history and food tours, and live jazz and theater (the latter in a restored vaudeville house). Through early October, you can take a cruise out to the lovely, isolated Star Island. The boutique shopping scene is memorable, especially for new and preowned clothing, books, and local art and crafts. My favorite new addition to Portsmouth is Vent, an ‘alternative activity’ space where you can free your frustrations by splattering paint and smashing glass.” — Robin Catalano

5. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

“I love Cape Cod any time of year, but autumn is extra special. The crowds of tourists have gone back to work, the summering students have returned to school, and the locals have begun to settle into their off-season routine.

“After Labor Day, many East Coast beaches, like Mayflower Beach in Dennis, loosen their dog restrictions. One of my favorite ways to spend a fall morning is to walk along the quiet beach with my dog happily chasing seagulls. It is one of those special moments — joyful and contemplative.

“The Cape Cod Rail Trail takes on brilliant fall colors, dotted between the evergreens; it provides a picturesque stroll through the towns and villages. A stop at Truro Vineyard for a wine tasting is a relaxing way to enjoy the cooler weather. A little further down Route 6 and you arrive in Provincetown where the streets are less congested. A brisk wind whips around Provincetown Harbor as you walk along the pier — a foretelling of the onset of freezing winter gales.” — Sandi Barrett

“Oozing with New England East Coast charm, Newport is a beautiful, Rhode Island coastal town with outstanding views, amazing restaurants, and majestic mansions. The fall season festivities include pick-your-own orchards, harbor cruises (through mid-October), and ghost tours. Take a lantern-led tour through Newport’s oldest and most haunted locations on an Olde Town ghost walk, the most popular walking tour.

“If you’d rather take a ride, head to Pachet Brook Tree Farm in nearby Tiverton to take a 30-minute hayride through the fields and woods of the 90-acre family-run farm which terminates at the pumpkin patch (weekends through October). Or, join Rail Explorers for a fall ride on pedal-powered rail bikes along abandoned railroad tracks by the bay.

“Newport also hosts several festivals in the fall, including food fests such as Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival (October 15-16, 2022) and Newport Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival at Fort Adams State Park (Oct 15), both of which feature some of the best eats in the area.” — Laura Ray

“It’s hard to pick just one spot to take in the fall beauty on the East Coast, but New York City and Central Park in particular is a top contender. The weather in the city is perfect, the crowds are lower than in the summer, and Central Park puts on a stunning display of fall foliage. We visited last year in early November and the leaves were just about at their peak. We planned the trip so we could experience fall in the city and also catch the Christmas markets, which are typically in full swing by the first part of November. This charming small town, all dolled up for fall, has a walkable downtown area with a well-known pizzeria, inn, and tap house from Nora Roberts’s Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy. Roberts is from Boonsboro, where you will find the largest selection of her world-famous published books at Turn the Page Bookstore and much more. Try seasonal craft beer from Dan’s Restaurant & Tap House and cross your fingers that they have butternut squash soup on the fall menu.

“Leaf peeping is a popular outdoor activity, as is hiking to the first Washington Monument at Washington Monument State Park. It is an easy walk from the parking lot and on the Appalachian Trail. “Although thought of as a summer destination, Virginia Beach can be enjoyed in the fall. After Labor Day, vacation crowds have thinned out, water becomes a little cooler, and beaches on the South end of the East Coast are quieter. For me, this is an ideal time.

“Enjoy long walks along the beach and lunch at one of the local eateries. Head to Famous Al’s for one of their classic hot dogs with fixings. Slurp oysters at Chick’s Oyster Bar. My personal favorite is the mac and cheese at BoBo’s Fine Chicken whose recipes have been handed down from both family and friends.

“If you are looking to destress, get a massage or spa package at Salon@31st. Simply lying on the North End beaches or watching military aircraft land from First Landing Beach also helps put you in a relaxed state of mind. Mingle with locals in the ViBe district’s Young Veterans, Smartmouth, or The Bunker breweries.” — Keshler Thibert

“Is there anything better than Asheville, NC, in the Blue Ridge Mountains? Asheville is home to the iconic Biltmore, the 8,000-acre Vanderbilt Estate. Now is a wonderful time to explore Asheville’s fall foliage, with dozens of deciduous color-changing trees, primarily in October. A mountain hike puts you amidst the red, orange, and yellow hues, and the brisk mountain air. Graveyard Fields on the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the easy hiking trails, or choose Linville Falls Trails for its thundering waterfall.

“Enjoy appetizers and a local beer flight at Cedric’s Tavern, where the Tavern Pork Pie is superb, before touring the Biltmore Mansion, gardens, and grounds. Shopping is enjoyable at Antler Hill Village, where you can dive into the Creamery’s Winky Bar Sundae or partake in a complimentary wine tasting. Downtown Asheville should not be missed—with a mural trail, the Grove Arcade, Asheville Art Museum, and French Broad Chocolate Lounge’s artisanal candies.” — Melody Pittman

“Charleston is an exciting town at any time of year, but in the fall, when the weather is absolutely perfect, you will experience everything the so-called Holy City has to offer at the ideal temperature to enjoy it all.

“Charleston is an old city with a ton of history. It is known as one of the most haunted places in America. Even though they run year-round, the fall is a terrific time to take a ghost and graveyard tour as it affords you exclusive access to one of Charleston’s oldest graveyards after dark.” — Jeanine Consoli

“Amelia Island is the perfect fall getaway on the East Coast. It is a gorgeous location year round, but in fall, you have a very tranquil, uncrowded beach with lots of wide-open outdoor space.

“A barrier island just off the coast of northeast Florida, you will find your own little piece of paradise when you visit in the fall. The soft white sand won’t burn your feet, the pristine water is still warm, and the crowds are gone. The temperature in fall is in the 70s up to mid-80s.

“Historic downtown showcases some excellent specialty shops, eateries with all kinds of cuisines, the oldest bar in Florida, and more. Abundant outdoor activities include fishing, sailing, biking, hiking, golfing, and horseback riding on the beach. Take a historic tour or hit the spa. I just love walking on the beach and reading a book while sitting by the ocean. You can relax and savor the quiet and the wonders of the East Coast nature.

“Fall ushers in a myriad of festivals for visitors to enjoy from the Fish to Fork festival taking place on September 29 – October 2 to the Northeast Florida Fair happening October 13 – 23. You might also enjoy the Island Hop Craft Brew Fest and the Amelia Island Jazz Festival both happening in October.

“When we visited, we stayed in the newly built Springhill Suites by Marriott, and we loved having a bit of extra room in the suites, the pool area, and the wonderful Luna Fine Art Gallery, housed between the Springhill and the Courtyard hotel.

“I can’t imagine a better place to visit and make new memories when you are desiring a much-needed escape in the fall on the East Coast.” — Robin O’Neal Smith

“Fall is a special time to visit the East Coast Florida Keys. The heat is less oppressive, the crowds are smaller, and there are lots of events planned to lure visitors during this normally slow time of the year on the East Coast.

“Fantasy Fest in Key West draws the biggest crowds. It’s highlighted by outrageous events and costumes, body painting, and lots of alcohol. The nine-day non-stop party in October is decidedly LGBTQ-friendly. There is a clothing-optional pool party for men. Women are encouraged to ‘Rock the Tatas,’ with the best tatas winning a $500 prize. Just about every bar in town has live music every night. This is not the place for bashful people.

“Things are a little tamer elsewhere in the Keys. Key Largo hosts REEF Fest in October, with sports diving on the offshore reef. In November you’ll find true gluttony at the Stone Crab Claw eating contest in Marathon. The Islamorada Sailfish Tournament is the first week in December.

“Check the official Keys website for a list of all events.” — Fred Mays

18. North Conway, New Hampshire

North Conway, a picturesque village located in the town of Conway is a place I love visiting in the summer. But the fall season is stunningly beautiful there, and there’s still plenty to do. To put it simply, in North Conway, you will get a complete New Hampshire fall package. From scenic train rides and historic general stores to massive corn mazes and all the apple cider and donuts you can consume, you’ll experience everything.

It’s a very good destination for the outdoorsy types, although, with the lack of sales tax, I find that shopping in Settlers Green Outlet Village is an ever-growing attraction.

19. Kittery, Main

Several years ago, on my Main trip, I had the opportunity to visit Kittery, located right over the New Hampshire and Massachusetts border. Apart from numerous outlet stores, you’ll also have the option of eating at their delicious restaurants, such as Robert’s Maine Grill and Bob’s Clam Shack.

Also, don’t miss to stop at Yummies, a candy store filled from top to bottom with candy you won’t see anywhere else. So be sure to give the kids a budget before entering.
