8 Inexpensive Weekend Getaways in New England | To Experience This Spring

8 Inexpensive Weekend Getaways in New England | To Experience This Spring

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

There’s arguably no region in the U.S. more enthusiastic to welcome spring’s arrival than New England. As the seasonal thaw takes hold, hotels and resorts that command top dollar in the summer season entice travelers by offering more bang for your buck with special offers, packages, deals, and added value.

Even better, as our parkas get tucked away to make room for lighter layers, destinations fête the return of warmer temperatures with fairs and festivals to trumpet spring’s arrival, so you can enjoy the perks of pre-peak-season travel.

New England weekend getaways in spring offer a tapestry of delights. The region bursts with vibrant flowers and blossoming trees, creating scenic landscapes for hiking and picnics. Coastal towns awaken from winter slumber, inviting leisurely strolls along quaint streets perfect for a weekend escape. Maple sugaring festivals add sweet flavors to the air, and inns offer cozy retreats with New England charm.

Here are 8 inexpensive spring destinations that have put winter in the rear-view mirror and are welcoming travelers with deals and steals.

Some of these places I’ve visited on a press trip, others I’ve discovered in my many New England travels. All opinions are my own.

8 Inexpensive Weekend Getaways in New England This Spring

1. Bretton Woods

New Hampshire

History buffs take note: Surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest, the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods has hosted four former presidents including Calvin Coolidge, Warren G. Harding, Woodrow Wilson, and George H.W. Bush. It was also the site of the signing of all major documents at the Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference in 1944, designating the popular New England retreat an official National Historic Landmark. In addition to commanders-in-chief, the sprawling bucolic property has been a favorite among poets, celebrities, and generations of families. But, recent renovations and expansions like the new Presidential Wing show the resort has not been left in the past but instead has a bright future.

As the ski season comes to a close, the New Hampshire resort’s surrounding hills are peppered with springtime blooms best enjoyed on a canopy tour. The zip lining experience high above the hemlock trees offers sweeping views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range. The longest of the nine zips is over 1,000 feet long and about 165 feet high off the forest floor, with two sky bridges and three rappels. The tour is designed for participants of average mobility, strength, and reasonably good health, but there are a number of short hikes along an unpaved path, so folks should be comfortable walking on uneven ground and down a moderate incline. Now is the best time to experience it all with the resort’s Take a Break offer, allowing guests to save 20 percent off the best available rate now through September 5, 2023, when booked before April 11, 2023.

2. Ogunquit

Maine

Colonial Inn, Ogunquit

Idyllically nested on Maine’s southern coast, Ogunquit boasts all the spoils of the quintessential New England summer beach town: miles of windswept sandy beaches, picture perfect craggy cliffs, and buttery lobster rolls around nearly every corner. It also has all the crowds that come with it that time of year. Springtime, however, is the best time to bask in Ogunquit’s grandeur without the masses. The captivating Marginal Way, a popular 2.5-mile paved path that traces the coastline, draws heaps of visitors in the summer, but this time of year, visitors can go at their own pace, pausing for birding or soaking in the view on one of the many oceanfront benches.

Just minutes from the Marginal Way is the historic Colonial Inn, which served as an impressive private residence during the mid-19th century and today welcomes travelers looking to experience the Maine coast. The property is considered the last of Ogunquit’s once-numerous stately Victorian-era hotels still in operation as a hotel. To celebrate the season, The Colonial Inn’s Spring Fling package features 10 percent off a two-night stay with chilled sparkling wine and a charcuterie board for guests upon their arrival.

3. Martha’s Vineyard

Massachusetts

An island getaway seems like the perfect way to shake off winter’s chill, and Martha’s Vineyard delivers. Shoulder season has its own kind of magic, no more so than in the spring, when the excitement of summer’s arrival is palpable but you can still live like a local. It’s also when you’re most likely to bump into the island’s regular celebrity guests and homeowners. Think Carly Simon, James Taylor, Oprah Winfrey, and Diane Sawyer.

Be there for the unofficial first sign of spring (if you’re not counting the crocuses and forsythia blooming across the 87-square-mile island): the annual opening of the Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs. Built in 1876 and welcoming not just the young but also the young-at-heart ever since, the colorful carousel is the oldest operating platform carousel in the country. In the summer, long lines swell for a ride on the hand-painted horses or to play the brass ring game.

After horsing around, you’ll have worked up an appetite, and spring is the best time to land coveted reservations that would have summer travelers waiting months for (like at l’étoile in Edgartown, which opens in May but starts taking reservations mid-April). Or, you can try scoring a table as a walk-in at hotspots like The Sweet Life Cafe.

The centrally-located Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites in the heart of charming and walkable Edgartown has a springtime offer: stay any night Sunday through Thursday in May and experience prices 25–30 percent lower than the high season. Enjoy your private balcony or relax in a rocking chair on the front porch, hop on one of the hotel’s bicycles, or borrow some board games for some family fun.

4. Manchester

Vermont

In the shadow of the shamrock-hued vista of the Green Mountains, Manchester perfectly marries past and present with its storybook downtown punctuated by century-old storefronts and white church steeples careening skyward. Experience an innovative culinary scene and modern comforts. Spring is arguably the best time to experience the legendary hiking trails best known in these parts.

Though Prospect Rock is a popular trail, some parts are remarkably steep and you’ll find a handful of mountain streams to cross. If just a casual hiker, stick to the Lye Brook Falls Trail. It’s 4.5 miles out-and-back, well-marked, and rewards hikers with a breathtaking view of a 125-foot-tall waterfall that has new growth along its rocky face this time of year. If you prefer to sit back and take in southern Vermont’s springtime grandeur in a comfy seat, the Mount Equinox Skyline Drive opens at the end of May and is a stunning drive that ascends 3,846-feet to the summit, offering panoramic mountain views. One not-to-miss hidden gem in Manchester is The American Museum of Fly Fishing. What it lacks in size it makes up for in interest, with exhibits and artifacts that steal the attention of even the casual outdoor enthusiast.

The Kimpton Taconic Hotel is centrally located in the heart of historic Manchester Village and feels the part with its traditional clapboard architecture and grand front porch, while offering a simple, accessible luxury vibe. This season, take advantage of the Third Night’s a Charm package, where travelers get their third night for free when booking three or more nights (book by May 23, 2023).

5. Newport

Rhode Island

When America’s wealthiest families made Newport its blueblood summertime playground during the Gilded Age, it set the bar high for travelers for decades to come. Fortunately, more than a century later, the City by the Sea still delivers, with mansions turned museums that belonged to society’s elite allowing us hoi polloi to get an up close look at their 19th-century decadence. As summer brings tens of thousands to this coastal enclave on the southernmost tip of Aquidneck Island, it also brings top dollar. Even the most basic accommodations can be hundreds a night. But springtime allows travelers to not only enjoy so much of what Newport is best known for — Cliff Walk, mansions, and world-class dining — they can experience more than one million blooming daffodils across the city and a bevy of springtime events.

In April, the Newport Beer Festival welcomes more than 50 craft brewers from near and far plus live music and good grub at Fort Adams perched on the shores of Narragansett Bay. May brings the Newport Oyster & Chowder Festival, where you can slurp and savor briny bivalves to your heart’s content from growers across Rhode Island. Enjoy creamy clam chowder, stuffies, and other spoils of the sea (and plenty for landlubbers) and tons of drinks to toast the season. Even better, the circumnavigating Ocean Race sails into town mid-May, bringing with it nearly 10 days of excitement and fanfare.

Best of all, lodging rates are still a far cry from what you’ll find in the summer and fall. Rooms at the newly christened Newport Harbor Island Resort on Goat Island can command hundreds in peak season. But take advantage of pre-summer offers like Book Early & Save, which offers up to 20 percent off the best available room rate when booking a month or more in advance (two-night minimum required; reservations are non-refundable). Ready to upgrade? Through April, the resort is offering a Suite Life package, featuring 15 percent off their roomy suites plus a complimentary bottle of prosecco, daily breakfast for two, and a pair of seasonal cocktails upon arrival.

6. Cape Cod

Massachusetts

The sandy, hook-shaped peninsula off mainland Massachusetts made famous by the Kennedys can shake off winter’s wrath with the best of them, so it should come as no surprise that Cape Cod feels different when spring arrives. Museums, galleries, shops, and restaurants along Main Street in towns including Falmouth, Dennis, Hyannis, Chatham, and Wellfleet — yes, they all have a Main Street — have a palpable energy. Seasonal ice cream shops start reopening for the season this time of year; others, like Cape Cod Creamery, forge ahead the whole year through.

The spring thaw might be best exhibited by the busy greens across the Cape’s more than 40 public and private golf courses. Highland Links in Truro is one of the oldest, built in 1892 and perched high along windswept bluffs overlooking a picture-perfect lighthouse (the tallest on the peninsula) and the sea. The Cape Cod Country Club in East Falmouth bordering scenic Coonamessett Pond is open to the public and enjoyed by golfers of all skill levels. Or stay and play at Blue Rock Resort in South Yarmouth with its own par-3 course. In celebration of the resort’s reopening in mid-April, the Goodbye, Winter Blues package includes perks like early check-in and late check-out, a flexible cancellation policy, and a special welcome amenity upon arrival. Even better, guests enjoy reciprocal rights with the other Red Jacket Resorts nearby including access to dining, swimming pools, and a large expanse of private beaches.

7. Bar Harbour

Maine

Nestled in Frenchman Bay, Bar Harbor is a quaint small town and a gateway to Acadia National Park. Most visitors stay here when visiting Acadia, but Bar Harbour is also fun to explore on its own. Bar Harbor is renowned for its breathtaking coastal beauty, yachts and lobster boats, and mesmerizing views of islands and the ocean.

Walk along West Street, learn local history at the Abbe Museum, go to an oceanarium, sample craft beers, eat fresh seafood caught in local waters. and be sure to save room for one of the memorable slices of blueberry pie served throughout the city.

8. Block Island

Rhode Island

Located off the southern coast of Rhode Island, Block Island features 17 miles of shoreline, as well as old-fashioned cottages and two historical lighthouses. And since Block Island is just under 10 square miles, it’s very easy to see on a weekend getaway.

Block Island is an especially great summer getaway, as all the beaches on the island are free for everyone, which is a unique feature in this Rhode Island region.

My 14 Favorite Things To Do In Genoa, Italy

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

Genoa is the capital of the Northwest Italian region of Liguria. It is one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean and is widely believed to be the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. His rather imposing statue stands in a small park right outside Genoa’s main train station.

All too often, travelers just pass through Genoa (or Genova, as it’s said in Italy) on their way to better-known places like Cinque Terre or coastal resorts like Portofino without realizing what a treasure trove of history, art, culture, and fashion they missed. I have to admit, I only discovered the beauty of Genoa because I had to stay overnight to catch a connecting train the next day to Rome and Naples. The more I walked the streets and the waterfront, the more palaces, squares, and gardens I discovered. I have been back several times since, each time more enchanting. Let me show you my favorite places, and you will be equally delighted.

There is great food to be had, too — and, of course, wine. Genoa is a university town, and the presence of so many students makes for a lively atmosphere. Combined with all that art and fabulous architecture as well as one of the world’s best aquariums, you will see why you should definitely plan a day or two in Genoa when you make your way to Liguria.

13 Best Things To Do In Genoa, Italy

1. The Royal Palace

Via Balbi is the name to remember because it is the main street in Genoa’s historic center, along which many of the most important and beautiful buildings are located. One of them is the Royal Palace, opposite San Carlo Church, which will hold you in awe with its long and elaborate façade. Built between 1643 and 1650, it started out life as a residential building owned by the influential Balbi family. After they encountered financial difficulties, it was sold to the Durazzo family and finally to the royal Savoy family in 1824. It became the Royal Palace and was adapted to their needs. In 1919, King Vittorio Emanuele III donated the palace to the Italian State.

When you enter, you will be overwhelmed with over 100 frescos, stuccos, and paintings by the best 17th- and 18th-century artists — there is even a hall of mirrors. Through the middle archway of the façade, you can look straight through to the Royal Dock and walk through the gardens.

2. Cathedral Of San Lorenzo

The massive cathedral, with its white and black striped façade, stands not far from the Royal Palace. It was first built around 1098 and then experienced many extensions and alterations until it emerged in its present form in the 17th century. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is the most important church in Genoa.

In Genoa’s Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, visitors can marvel at the stunning Gothic architecture, adorned with intricate sculptures and artwork. Inside, the cathedral houses exquisite chapels, ancient relics, and beautiful frescoes. The highlight of Cattedrale di San Lorenzo is the Chapel of St. John the Baptist, featuring a silver altarpiece and the saint’s remains.

Porta Soprana in Genova, Italy

3. Porta Soprana

Porta Soprana, along with Porta dei Vacca and the since-demolished Porta Aurea, is one of the medieval stone gates of Genoa. They and the surrounding city walls, known as Barbarossa Wall, were erected in record time in the 12th century to defend Genoa’s independence as a republic against the advances of Emperor Barbarossa. The citizens of Genoa helped, financially and physically, to construct these massive buildings in just 6 years.

The Porta Soprana formed the entrance to the city from the east, and you can’t help but be impressed when you walk through today.

4. Old Town Molo

If you want to experience the whole medieval and Renaissance glory of Genoa, head for Molo, the old town. It’s actually made up of three districts and contains 47 Italian palaces, three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Especially important and beautiful are Doge’s Palace, overlooking Piazza Matteotti, and Palazzi dei Rolli.

The streets of Molo are narrow, with many steps connecting the various levels. It is close to the old harbor, and everything is easily reached on foot, but a lot of walking and some climbing is involved. But there are also plenty of bars, cafes, and Italian restaurants where you can have a break.

5. Aquarium Of Genoa

Being so closely connected to the sea, it does not really come as a surprise that Geona is home to Europe’s largest aquarium, the Aquarium of Genoa, or Acquario di Genova. Over 12,000 species are housed in a futuristic building with several departments. There are huge shark tanks and, my favorite, the Kingdom of Ice. The walls are white lacquered to resemble real ice, and penguins and other arctic creatures play around to the visitors’ delight. Yet another section houses dolphins and corals.

6. Lighthouse Of Genoa

Don’t miss visiting the Lighthouse of Genoa, the symbol and landmark of the city. Commonly known as Lanterna, it is the official lighthouse of the Port of Genoa and stands 249 feet high on the promontory called Capo di Faro. It is the tallest lighthouse in the Mediterranean and is still manned by a lighthouse keeper. Built in 1128, it is also one of the oldest lighthouses still in operation.

It serves a dual purpose, as a warning signal for sailors and as a fortification. For that purpose, it was incorporated into the city walls in the 17th century. The lighthouse can only be reached on foot via a path along the Lanterna Promenade that forms part of the Lanterna Park. Only the first 172 steps to the lighthouse are open to the public, as the top is under military control.

7. Via Garibaldi

Via Garibaldi is one of the longest streets of Old Town Genoa and one which, with its sumptuous palaces, represents the wealth of the city during the 15th century. Affluent merchants constructed their palaces and decorated them lavishly, inside and out, with frescos, paintings, valuable furniture, and beautiful gardens full of flowers and fountains. Not surprisingly the entire street is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the middle sits the Musei di Strada Nuove, which is a complex connecting three palaces: Palazzo Doria Tursi, which is also the town hall; Palazzo Bianco, which is the main art museum of the region; and Palazzo Rosso. The entire complex consists of over 75 rooms, including courtyards, gardens, loggias (exterior galleries), and terraces, interspersed with fabulous views of the city and the historical center. Plan for several hours. In the town hall, you’ll find a curiosity: the historic violins of Niccolò Paganini are kept here, including the famous Cannone.

8. Trenino Pippo And Pippetto Tourist Trains

I am not normally a great fan of tourist trains, but the Trenino Pippo and Trenino Pippetto are different. In fact, given the huge amount of historic buildings in the city, it’s a good idea to board these little trains. The red line departs in front of the aquarium for a 45-minute roundtrip tour that allows you to get a good overview to help decide which ones you want to visit in more detail later. The recorded explanations are very good and given in multiple languages, and the price is only around 10 euro for adults. Kids pay half price.

9. Galeone Neptuno

Hollywood found its way to Genoa too. The Neptuno is an exact replica of the 17th-century Spanish galleon of the same name and is now a popular tourist attraction sitting in Genoa’s Porto Antico, which is Italian for “old port.” Above the waterline, she is a true replica, but below there is a steel hull. The interior can be visited. In 2011, she portrayed the Jolly Roger, the ship of Captain Hook in the TV miniseries Neverland.

10. Via XX Settembre

Exploring Via XX Settembre is an ideal pastime for an afternoon, even a rainy one. The over half-mile-long street is one of the most popular thoroughfares in Genoa, crossing from east to west. It is lined with Art Deco buildings and buildings of other styles, all fronted by marble-columned arcades under which one can seek refuge should it rain. The mosaic marble pavements are another interesting sight.

What the Genoese like most on Via XX Settembre is shopping. Here you can see why Genoa is not far behind Milan as far as fashion is concerned. Many chain stores, like ZARA, are present, but so are plenty of Italian designer boutiques. There’s something for every taste and budget.

In between your shopping, window or otherwise, you’ll want to enjoy a coffee and cake or sandwich. One of the nicest cafes with a great offer of typical Italian macaroons, as well as pancakes, candied flowers, and more, is Douce Pâtisserie Cafè.

11. Teatro Carlo Felice (Opera)

Featuring one of the 19th century’s most extravagant rococo cupolas, Teatro Carlo Felice was built in 1824. It was able to accommodate an audience of 25,000 in five tiers of boxes. Unfortunately, in 1941, a firebomb destroyed the roof, and the cupola and theatre suffered further damage throughout World War II.

Reconstruction began after the end of the war but was delayed until, finally, the design of architect Aldo Rossi was accepted. The theater opened again in 1991. Many parts of the original façade were reconstructed, but the interior is entirely modern. Try to go and see an opera performance. Bear in mind that the Genoese dress up for such occasions.

Teatro Carlo Felice faces one of Genoa’s most beautiful fountain-filled squares, Piazza De Ferrari.

12. Boccadasse Seafront Promenade

Walk to the charming Italian seaside village of Boccadasse, an old fishing village that features picturesque pastel-colored houses around a small bay. Located between two major beach regions of the Italian Riveria, Genoa doesn’t have any real beaches, but there is a small shingle beach at Boccadasse. Stroll along the seafront promenade and take in the sea view.

Enjoy the view from a restaurant terrace, then stop for ice cream and people-watch. If you’re too full to walk back, you can always catch the bus.

13. Galata Maritime Museum

Nestled a short distance from Genoa’s Aquarium, the Galata Maritime Museum (Galata Museo del Mare), chronicles Genoa’s centuries-long history as a major maritime power. Galata Museum is considered one of the best museums in Genoa, and it is one of the top attractions in the city.

The Museum’s four floors showcase exhibits from sailing ships and sea explorations, as well as a dedicated room commemorating the renowned Genoese explorer Christopher Columbus and his historic Transatlantic voyage.

14. Palazzi dei Rolli

Genoa’s Palazzi dei Rolli comprises 42 residences constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries. During official state visits to Genoa by notable guests, a lottery was used to determine which palace would accommodate the guests. Today, these palaces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

All within a 10-minute walk of each other, the Palazzi dei Rolli residences are scattered throughout Genoa’s city center. The most notable palaces are situated along Via Garibaldi, Via Lomellini, and Via Balbi. The Palazzi dei Rolli is a must-visit for architecture lovers and history buffs. Expect to spend one to two hours per residence exploring their interiors.

Pro Tip

Genoa is easy to explore on foot, but that can also be very tiring. Therefore it is a good idea to find accommodations that put you right in the middle of the city’s historic places. One such place, where I stayed several times, is the family-run Hotel Balbi. It’s only a two-star hotel, but it’s very clean and comfortable enough. It has a buffet breakfast and a nice restaurant next door. The great advantage is that it’s just steps from the beginning of Via Balbi.

FAQs

What Is Genoa in Italy Best Known For?

As the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, Genoa is the embodiment of the European maritime tradition. This port city is also known for its many examples of medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Gothic architecture in its historic center and its amazing surrounding coastline.

How Many Days in Genoa Is Enough?

Four days should be enough to visit Genoa but if you are planning day trips to the wider Ligurian region, a week in this old port would be enough. With less than four days, you risk devoting little time to too many things, without fully appreciating any of them.

Is Genoa in Italy Safe?

As the capital of the Ligurian region, Genoa is as safe as any northern Italian city. However, try not to enter the narrow, isolated alleys in Via Prè, Via del Campo, and Via della Maddalena. During the evenings, if you stay in the historic center, stay where most people stay.

What Are the Best Day Trips From Genoa?

Genoa is an amazing hub for some truly remarkable Ligurian day trips. Nearby Boccadasse fishing village and charming Santa Margherita Ligure are ideal for daily Genoa tours. You can also take boat trips to Portofino and Cinque Terre, and other coastal towns in this part of the Italian Riviera.

How to Avoid Crowds in Genoa?

You’ll have a more enjoyable visit if you can manage to visit Genoa on a day when a cruise ship isn’t arriving. Genoa gets very busy when the cruise ships dock and unload passengers for the day.

Top 10 U.S. International Airports With The Most Global Connections | See What Tops The List

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

Before we list the top U.S. international airports, let’s take a global look. London’s Heathrow Airport is, once again, the world’s most internationally connected airport, according to a new report.

That designation comes from global travel data provider OAG’s Megahubs Index 2023, which is compiled every year.

OAG’s flight data platform contains a comprehensive airline schedule and global flight connections database. Its Megahubs Index is compiled by comparing the number of scheduled connections to and from international flights with the number of destinations served by each of the world’s 100 largest and busiest airports and the 100 largest international airports.

While news of Heathrow’s ranking stands to reason since the airport previously held that position in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic crimped international travel, what is surprising is that John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York is now the second most internationally connected airport. Remarkably, JFK was ranked number 18 in OAG’s Megahubs Index in 2019.

“With American Airlines and Delta Air Lines adding new destinations out of New York, along with Air Senegal, Air New Zealand, and others having launched or reopened previously served routes, it’s no surprise JFK exceeded expectations to climb to #2 in the world,” John Grant, chief analyst at OAG, said in a statement.

Top 10 U.S. International Airports With The Most Global Connections

The OAG Megahubs Index 2023 ranks the top 50 international airport megahubs. Interestingly, many of those international airports are located in the U.S.

Here are the top 10 U.S. airport megahubs with the highest number of possible global connections according to OAG’s Megahubs Index 2023.

  1. John F. Kennedy International, New York
  2. Chicago O’Hare International, Illinois
  3. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Georgia
  4. Newark Liberty International, New Jersey
  5. Los Angeles International, California
  6. Dallas Fort Worth International, Texas
  7. Miami International Airport, Florida
  8. George Bush Intercontinental, Texas
  9. Seattle–Tacoma International, Washington
  10. San Francisco International Airport, California

Regional and Smaller International Airports in the U.S.

Federal Aviation Administration’s data show that almost 3 million people fly in and out of major USA airports each day. However, the U.S. also has several regional and smaller international airports that provide international connections to a more limited extent.

Some notable examples include:

Orlando International Airport (MCO)

With 35 domestic and international destinations, Orlando International Airport is the busiest hub in the state of Florida.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)

Best Hotels in Porto Guide

Porto is one of Portugal’s busiest destinations, and with that comes a wide range of hotels for visitors to choose from. If you’ve never been to Porto before, this decision can be understandably overwhelming.

But by keeping in mind four important factors that we’ve gone into detail about below, you’ll narrow it down to the right hotel option for you—one that ticks all your Porto vacation boxes.

Location

When it comes to city breaks, location is one of the most important factors that you need to consider. Choosing a hotel that is a far distance from the attractions you wish to visit will result in lengthy—and often confusing—journeys into the city center.

By opting for a hotel that is within walking distance of Porto’s must-visit landmarks and monuments, you’ll ultimately save yourself precious time and money that you would have instead wasted on public transport or private taxis.

With all that in mind, however, we understand that some people prefer a more peaceful city break vacation, so therefore, don’t mind being a short distance away from the hustle and bustle.

If this is you, then think about the ways you’ll get from your accommodation into downtown Porto and weigh up just how far away your hotel can be without the journey becoming unreasonable.

Budget

Porto has both luxury and more budget-friendly accommodation options meaning regardless of your budget, there will be something that falls into your spending category. Before looking at Porto hotels, create a rough estimate of how much you can comfortably spend during your vacation and keep this figure in mind during your search.

Eating out and attraction prices—for the most part—aren’t extortionate in Porto. But it’s worthwhile factoring these costs in to give yourself a ballpark figure before your vacation commences.

Amenities

Are you the type who prefers a hotel with all the bells and whistles? Or do you simply need a bed to sleep in and not much more?

The amenities that Porto hotels offer are another thing to think about during the booking process as if you do appreciate a swimming pool, an onsite restaurant, or even a spa, then this will narrow down your search significantly.

Higher-end hotels will provide you with various amenities that you’d associate with a luxury stay, while cheaper hotels—in order to keep costs low—may only offer the bare minimum.

As Porto is a city with so many amazing attractions for visitors to explore if your hotel doesn’t offer any on-site amenities, then not to worry, as there will always be something to see and do outside of the property walls.

Hotel Type

And the final thing to think about when Porto hotel browsing is the type of hotel that interests you. Porto has everything from hostels to five-star luxury accommodations which give everyone the chance to enjoy the city and all it has to offer.

If you’re vacationing on your honeymoon or getting away for an anniversary, then you may want to opt for one of Porto’s more top-end choices. However, if you’re trying to keep costs to a minimum, then even some of the city’s cheaper alternatives will be more than adequate for a weekend or week-long stay.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the best areas to stay in Porto?

There are a few great districts and areas in Porto. However, the type of vacation you’re after will ultimately narrow down the choices. Ribeira, for example, is one of the most historic areas of Porto and it puts you within close proximity to many of the city’s major attractions.

Baixa is also another central Porto district, which again, is within walking distance of landmarks like the Porto Cathedral, the Grand Town Hall, and Clerigos Tower. If you’re heading to Porto to indulge yourself in its world-famous Port, then Vila Nova de Gaia is the district for you. And if you’re looking to keep things as low cost as possible, then Bonfim is an excellent option.

Are hotels in Porto expensive?

Like destinations all over the world, Porto has both expensive and inexpensive hotels to suit all budgets. From dorm rooms in hostels to luxurious five-star accommodations, there really is something for everyone, making Porto a fantastic destination for every type of traveler.

What is the best time to visit Porto?

The best time to visit Porto is from May through to September, as this is when the city experiences both beautiful weather and popular festivals like the São João Festival.

For travelers looking for a more budget-friendly trip to Portugal’s second-largest city, however, then visiting outside of these months will result in cheaper accommodation options—and the added bonus of smaller crowds at the city’s most popular destinations.

What are the typical amenities hotels in Porto have?

Many hotels in Porto offer swimming pools, onsite restaurants, fitness centers, and sometimes spa facilities. However, the amenities included in your stay often reflect on the price you pay. More luxurious hotel options will provide its guests with a range of amenities while cheaper hotels may only supply you with a private room.

Conclusion

Porto is one of the best places to visit in all of Portugal, and its hotels only elevate the area even further. With so many great accommodation options to choose from—including budget, mid-range, and luxury hotels—we can guarantee that you’ll find the right stay for you and all your vacation needs.

Our top choice, The Rebello Hotel & Spa, with its romantic Duoro River views is ideal in terms of location, size, and amenities. However, coming in second is the Pestana Palacio do Freixo with its imposing architecture and refreshing infinity pool.
