The Incredible Story Of Goats in Trees in Morocco | Meet the Peculiar Climbers

The Incredible Story Of Goats in Trees in Morocco | Meet the Peculiar Climbers

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

When you travel the world, you’ll find all kinds of interesting animals doing unexpected things. If you’re an animal lover, you’ll set your sights on destinations like Australia, where sugar gliders swoop through the air and quokkas snuggle up to visitors on Rottnest Island in the hopes of getting some fresh greens from the Melaleuca bush tops nearby. But the rest of the world has some pretty interesting animal situations, too, including the goats in trees in Morocco.

Why Do Moroccan Goats Climb Trees?

As you travel through Morocco, you might catch a glimpse of some goats hanging out on the branches of the Argania — or argan — trees, chowing down on some green or brown bean-like fruit. The tree is prickly and thorny, so a lot of critters wouldn’t ever risk climbing it, but these goats are in it for the tasty fruit. In fact, their love of the fruit is exactly what convinces the cloven-hooved kids to climb.

The country’s natural food sources for animals can be meager, so the goats are pretty determined to get to this tasty dinner. If they’ve eaten all the low-hanging fruit of the season, they’ll hop up into the branches and get to eat whatever’s available.

Goats can also be found climbing trees in other regions with argan trees, such as Algeria and Tunisia. These goats are attracted to the argan tree’s fruit, and their climbing behavior helps with seed dispersal, aiding in the tree’s reproduction.

The Role Of Argan Oil

The nut of the Argania tree is used to produce argan oil, which is used for cosmetic and culinary purposes. So while you might think the farmers of Argania trees would discourage this fruit consumption by these hairy creatures, many landowners actually encourage them to consume the fruit for a couple of reasons. The first is argan oil.

Goats simply can’t digest the fruit’s seed, no matter how much they enjoy eating it. Their munching on them, though, strips away the skin and fruit. They then swallow the seed or spit it out, meaning a clean, spit-out seed or one that’s passed through their digestive system and been “softened.”

This softening of the seeds, thanks to the goat’s digestive juices, makes the nuts useable for producing argan oil.

If you’ve ever heard about two of the most expensive coffees in the world — Kopi Luwak or Black Ivory — you know that argan oil isn’t the only thing consumed by humans that comes from, well, poop. But if you’re rethinking your argan cooking oil products about now, you might be comforted by the fact that the excreted seeds are typically turned into cosmetics rather than cooking oil. The rest is “filtered” via other means to avoid the “ick” factor.

The Role Of Modern Tourism

Tourism is another primary reason you’ll see goats in the trees. Farmers formerly encouraged them to jump up so they could do their part in “cleaning” the argan seeds, but now it’s more about keeping tourists coming to see the uniquely behaving quadrupeds and their happy munching. Many of the farmers charge for a variety of things, like taking photos, posing with the goats, and so on. Tour buses bring in groups to see the goats and the tour companies give a stipend or tip to farmers for allowing them to bring sightseers by for the stop on the way to other Moroccan destinations.

If you try to take a photo without paying, know that you might be asked for money.

How To See The Goats

To see these critters climbing the branches of the Argania tree, you’ll first trek to Morocco, generally via one of the larger cities that has an airport for easy access. Once you’re in-country, you’ll need to head to the Souss-Massa-Draa region south of Marrakech. There are popular tourist destinations in the area that you’ll enjoy visiting as well, including Agadir, Essaouira, and the fortified market city of Taroudant.

The Argania trees grow throughout this region’s mountains, but for the most likely sightings of these bearded climbers, you’ll want to get off the highly trafficked roads and go into the mountainous areas.

The Argan fruit is ripe in June, so the best times to see the goats climbing around in the trees will be late spring and early summer. You can see them higher in the trees at other times of the year, but the sightings aren’t as consistent.

And if you’re tempted to grab some of the fruit to bring back with you, know that governing bodies have strict regulations on who may gather the fruit. Let your photos, or well-sealed argan oil products, be your souvenirs instead.

Do the ‘Tree-Climbing’ Goats of Morocco Ever Get Hurt?

When the goat herders discovered the visitors’ interest in their animals’ unusual behavior, they decided to exploit the situation, which resulted in the unfortunate animals being abused. To keep the goats from jumping down, the herders tie them to the tree branches for hours, until the tourists stop coming.

In summer, when temperatures can soar to the hundreds, the goats can suffer from heat stress and dehydration. Animal rights activists initiated a substantial campaign opposing this practice, but the herders argue that it’s their only way to make ends meet and feed these animals.

The Moroccan Argan Tree

The argan tree is a prehistoric tree that only grows in certain regions of Morocco like Essaouira. While most plants don’t survive the hard desert climate, argan trees are strong enough to survive the hot Sahara climate. However, even for them, it is a tough job.

Today, Argan trees are severely threatened and are the focus of a protection campaign. Locals have cut down large areas of forest and hungry Moroccan tree goats have contributed to their depletion as well. Yet the trees are extremely valuable for the Moroccan economy.

FAQs

What Is the Argan Tree?

The argan tree or Argania spinosa is a native species of the sub-Saharan region of Morocco, which grows in arid and semiarid areas. It’s one of the most important species within Arganeraie, a woodland ecosystem rich in endemic plant life.

Do the Goats in Morocco Really Climb Trees?

Yes, the argan fruit attracts the goats which will climb up to reach the pulpy treats since they are very agile. The argan tree-climbing goats are unique to the North African nation, and their climbing is mostly instinctual.

Where to Find the Argan Tree Goats of Morocco?

The argan tree goats are endemic to the southwest of Morocco and you might have joy finding them between Marrakech and the coastal town of Essaouira. After entering the argan trees region, you won’t need any detours or intrepid goat-finding – they are there beside the main N8 road.

What Are Argan Nuts Used For?

Argan fruit contains a small nut used to make the Argan oil prized in cooking and cosmetics. Argan tree goats eat the pulp of the fruit but can’t digest the small argan nuts, which are then gathered by the local farmers for sale in the market.

Is the Goat-Display Business Harming the Argan Goats?

Many animal welfare advocates who fight against animal cruelty are calling to shut down the goats-in-trees business because there isn’t any sustainable system in place. The goats are being manipulated and exploited. They’re not moving freely, and don’t have access to food, water, or even shade.

My 13 Favorite Mother Daughter Weekend Trips in Texas | To Bond, Reconnect and Have Loads of Fun

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

My mom is very special to me. She’s 83 years young and has much life left in her. She will not go anywhere by herself, so I take her on trips with me. When I plan a mother-daughter trip, I usually choose small Texas towns with a town square, historic buildings, beautiful gardens, and boutique shopping. We both agree that we like to road trip when the weather is nice — not too hot, not too cold.

My mom and I like many of the same thing, including antiquing, historical sites, finding old treasures, and ice cream. Now and then, I get her out of her comfort zone and head to the hiking trails. But she and I are the happiest staying at a bed and breakfast that serves nice breakfasts, and at night watching her favorite show — Wheel Of Fortune. Below are some of our favorite mother-daughter trips we’ve taken in Texas.

13 Best Mother Daughter Weekend Trips in Texas

1. Palestine Dogwood Blooms

East Texas Dogwoods in Bloom.

Palestine is a charming town in East Texas that we’ve not been to together, and it was our latest trip. We were excited to experience the East Texas culture and see the beautiful dogwood trees and attractions we had never had the chance to see. I found an adorable rustic cabin in the woods to stay in, and they served us breakfast each morning. If you’re ever out that way, look up The Ranch At Walston Springs. You’ll be dazzled by the landscape, the beautiful garden, and the walks down by the river.

One of the best times to visit is during the Dogwood Blooms Trail Celebration, which runs from the middle of March to the first of April. It’s when the dogwood blooms outshine the town.

Pro Tip: The Texas State Railroad is a wonderful excursion to take. It offers several tours throughout the year.

2. Magnolia Market, Waco

To take a trip to a town that offers shopping by one of your favorite home DIY couples on TV is a trip to take multiple times — and we have. The Magnolia Market changes its decor quite often, and there seems to be more added to the market every time we go. My mom and I have been here at least three times — twice on a getaway and once returning from San Antonio.

From the first to the lastest mother-daughter road trip to Waco, we’ve seen the Magnolia Market grow into a one-stop-shop market with row after row of shops. Plus, all the food trucks are lined up in a curve. Weekends can get busy waiting in lines just to get into the stores. The Magnolia Table Restaurant is no different. Plan to wait in line there too.

Pro Tip: If you have time to spare, take a trip to downtown Waco. The shops and boutiques are plentiful there too.

3. East Texas Arboretum And Botanical Society

Athens is a lovely small town in East Texas where the air is nice and the trees are beautiful. We have taken many day trips here, and on our last visit, we took an afternoon stroll through the gardens at East Texas Arboretum & Botanical Society. We’ve visited many times in the spring, but I hear it’s just gorgeous in fall. It’s quite pleasant to walk around the arboretum to see all the beauty and try to name all the flowers and trees. If time allows, you may want to visit the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center — a popular place for families to go.

Pro Tip: One of our favorite places to eat in Athens is The Cherry Laurel. Whether we go for a treat or lunch, it never disappoints.

4. New Braunfels

I love to visit this part of Texas for local events and to get a glimpse of the Guadalupe River. My mom and I have been here twice. The last time was recently, when we were invited to a special event. Any reason to go to New Braunfels is good enough for us, especially if there’s time to visit the small charming town of Gruene and have lunch at the Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar overlooking the river.

Pro Tip: If you like to dine with scenic views, whether in New Braunfels or Gruene, it’s best to make reservations as those seats are the first taken.

5. San Antonio

I think most travelers go to San Antonio to stroll around the riverwalk. We were no different. It’s a must whenever we’re in town. I wanted to do something special for my mom, so I booked us a riverwalk boat ride. It was a little chilly that day, so we bundled up together while listening to the taxi driver tell the story of San Antonio. Afterward, we made our way to one of the many restaurants on the riverwalk.

Pro Tip: The best time to visit the riverwalk is during the week.

6. Berry Pickin’ In East Texas

We took a day trip out to Edom — another small East Texas town — to pick blueberries. It was one hot day in July and our first time visiting a pick-your-own blueberry farm. We picked enough blueberries for a thousand blueberry cobblers — not really — but it seemed we picked way too many. Afterward, we each bought blueberry ice cream. I felt we deserved it. I couldn’t help but buy a bottle of syrup, jam, and jelly — all blueberry. Next time, I will find us a cozy bed and breakfast to stay overnight. If you ever drive through or visit Edom, stop at Blueberry Hill Farms. Be sure to check the dates and times they are open.

Pro Tip: If you plan to pick blueberries and visit the small town shops, go on any day of the week except Sunday and Monday when all the shops are closed.

Jefferson, Texas, is known for its quaint historic bed and breakfast inns and charming downtown. It’s considered one of the best weekend getaways for couples and families. 8. Downtown Grapevine

Another great town to visit is Grapevine, Texas, any time of the year. Grapevine is a short driving distance from Dallas and Fort Worth. There is always something happening on Main Street. Grapevine is one of my favorite places to visit for shopping and wineries. But, mom and I chose Christmas time to visit together. This is when all the shops get out their fancy holiday decorations, and the town lights up with special events and all the outdoor holiday-themed characters. It’s when the town comes alive with holiday music, fake snow (hey, it’s Texas), and extra attractions all throughout town.

Pro Tip: You’re lucky if you’re going for the wine, as there are at least 10 wineries right on Main Street.

9. Fort Worth

Head to the Fort Worth Stockyards if you’re looking for a place to go in Fort Worth with everything from great restaurants, shopping of all kinds, wine, beer, cowboys, bull riding, and plenty of live entertainment. The daily longhorn cattle drive happens twice a day at 11:30 am and 4:00 pm. Find a spot on the sidewalk to see real cowboys ride Texas longhorns. It’s well worth seeing, especially if you’ve never seen longhorns… or cowboys! Hotel Drover, Autograph Collection is within walking distance of the Stockyards and is the perfect place to stay.

Pro Tip: There is a new reason to visit the Fort Worth Stockyards, well, if you love the famous John Wayne, aka The Duke. A John Wayne Museum has joined in all the fun and is located on East Exchange Avenue and Rodeo Drive.

10. McKinney

Even though McKinney, Texas, is not a small town (population in the hundred thousands), it sure feels like it, especially downtown. My mom and I got invited on a downtown McKinney food walking tour, and I wanted to make it special, so I booked a room on Vrbo. It was a small room with a shared bathroom, and mom got to bring her dog, Lily. It was truly nothing big, but there are many charming rentals in McKinney, and some are even within walking distance of downtown. I would love to make this trip again, but stay closer to downtown. Check out downtown McKinney — I bet you’ll love it as much as we do.

11. A Trip To The Texas Hill Country

I haven’t taken my mom to the Hill Country yet, but I’ve been several times. Any town you choose in the Texas Hill Country will be fantastic. Depending on what you want to do is where you’ll end up. For instance, if you want to visit the wineries, you may want to stay close to Highway 290. There’s a slew of them on this highway from Johnson City to Fredericksburg. Dripping Springs has the Hamilton Preserves and Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center, if you and your mom like the outdoor life. If you like to shop, opt to stay in Boerne. Its Main Street has boutique after boutique and lots in between.

12. Historic Granbury

If you’d like to get away from the crowds, visiting the charming town of Historic Granbury would be the perfect Mother’s Day weekend getaway. Stay in one of the farmhouse-style secluded cabins at Granbury Cabins at Windy Ridge for a taste of life in the country.

Each cabin is equipped with a hot tub, a fully stocked kitchen, and a fire pit. You won’t have to leave the entire weekend, but if you want to get out and about, you’re close to Granbury Town Square, where you’ll find entertainment, dining, and shopping,

Best St Pete Beach Hotels Guide

Introduction

With so much to see and do in this Florida destination, you might think that hotel selection isn’t as important as other factors when it comes to a St. Pete Beach vacation.

However, it’s vital that you choose an accommodation option that fits your specific needs, as the right hotel will undoubtedly enhance your stay, whereas choosing incorrectly could leave a sour taste in your mouth.

Whether you want to be within walking distance of good restaurants, have water sports equipment at your fingertips, or are only keen to lounge on a private beach, then there are some things you must take into account when selecting a St Pete Beach hotel.

Here are the four biggest factors we think you need to pay attention to when booking.

Budget

Like many Florida vacation hotspots, St. Pete Beach is home to a plethora of hotels at every price point.

While it is roughly true that you get what you pay for, that doesn’t necessarily mean that less expensive options will be inherently worse than fancier hotels and resorts that cost more.

No matter what your budgetary constraints are, you’ll be able to find something great in St. Pete Beach, but you would do well to keep costs in mind when selecting accommodation.

Activities

Some vacationers will want to do nothing but sit on the beach in St. Pete, whereas others might be excited to explore the cultural delights of the sunny city.

And some holidaymakers may even want to indulge their inner adrenaline lover and try their hands at water sports. Choosing the right hotel means can make whatever you want to do easier. Read reviews and check out what activities are on offer before booking, and you’ll save yourself some hassle once you arrive.

Amenities

Even if you’re planning on spending most of your time in St. Pete Beach outside of your room, you should still ensure that the hotel has all the amenities you might want.

These might be as basic as free wi-fi and a pool, or something much more specific, like babysitting services or tennis courts. After all, you’ve come on vacation to relax, not to search for cabanas, or spend half your day heading into town for something that you could find in a hotel with a store.

Accommodation flexibility

Everybody wants to be easy-breezy at the beach but sometimes plans change.

Having accommodations with some flexibility can be the difference between a delayed but still fantastic holiday or a big waste of money that ends up causing resentment.

While you may be able to get some deals on non-refundable hotels and resorts because of the nature of the booking, it’s always good to have some wiggle room when booking your St. Pete Beach hotel. If something does happen, you’ll be happy you built in the flexibility.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is St. Pete Beach walkable?

Yes! St. Pete Beach is mostly walkable, although under the summer sun, it can be a little bit taxing to take a longer stroll, and we would recommend taxis or renting a car if you are planning on heading Downtown.

However, if you’re mostly planning on being by the beach, you will be able to stretch your legs instead of getting in a ride share.

Is St. Pete Beach safe?

Yes, St. Pete Beach is generally an incredibly safe place in terms of crime, especially around the beaches. However, like most places, you should keep your wits about you at night, and avoid going south or west of Downtown into non-tourist zones, as that will increase your chances of being a victim of crime.

In terms of nature, St. Pete Beach is relatively safe, but always exercise caution when going into the sea, or dealing with wildlife. This is especially true if you have young children, as even the most gentle seas can hold some danger.

Is St. Pete Beach just for partying?

Not at all! St. Pete Beach is incredibly family-friendly, and even the bars are generally more about having a relaxing drink rather than getting ready for a big night out. With that said, if you do want to let loose a little, there are plenty of places to socialize and have a dance, so you will be in luck if that’s your plan.

Is the water safe in St. Pete Beach?

Yes, the water is very safe to swim in. The Gulf of Mexico is somewhat enclosed, which means that the worst of the waves are avoided so you can bob around in the sea to your heart’s content. The tap water is also safe to drink, so you don’t have to spend money on plastic bottles that are also bad for the environment.

Conclusion

With its combination of serene beaches, cultural highlights, and thriving hospitality scene, St. Pete Beach is an ideal destination for those who want to lounge under the baking sun to the soundtrack of waves lapping the shore.

Choosing the right hotel for your needs will only add to your experience, ensuring that you can focus on everything that makes this Florida destination such a popular place to visit. We can wholeheartedly recommend our best overall pick, the Plaza Beach Hotel Beachfront Resort, for most travelers looking for a relaxing, yet fun getaway under the Florida sun.

That being said, there really is a St. Pete Beach hotel for every kind of vacation goer, so no matter what you’re planning on doing with your time off, you’ll have a blast here with one of our picks for the best hotels in St. Pete Beach.

Bozouls, France: Explore a Town Built Around a Giant, Mysterious Hole

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

Residents of the French town of Bozouls have a unique view from their living rooms — a direct, 300-foot drop-down.

Located in the Aveyron region of southern France, the town has sat on the edge of a deep, crescent-shaped hole in the ground for almost 1,000 years. This unique city plan combines both a natural canyon and a manmade town, resulting in one of the most stunning locations in France.

The canyon is more than 1,000 feet in diameter and 300 feet deep, and displays gorgeous limestone as well as lush, green trees and colorful flowers. The stone buildings directly on the edge of the canyon match the colors of the exposed rock, and the manmade buildings look as though they belong in nature as much as the surrounding trees.

The landscape of Bozouls hole is not a new phenomenon. The deep canyon is hundreds of years old, created by a former river, the Dordeau, which slowly eroded the area’s natural limestone. When the water left, its shape remained, and the result was a beautiful, green, and rocky canyon.

Locals initially took advantage of the unique landscape by building a giant castle, using the landscape’s unconquerable depths as a means of protection. While this 9th-century feature, unfortunately, did not survive to the modern day, a 12th-century Sainte Fauste church has remarkably stood the test of time.

Located on the strip of land in the middle of the canyon, the Sainte Fauste church has been open to visitors for hundreds of years. Visitors can take in the beauty of the ancient, surviving architecture of this Romanesque church, and then peer over the edge of the rock they stand on, admiring all 300 feet of the nature below.

A view of the historic buildings.

The town itself is fairly small — just around 3,000 residents — but they understand how beautiful their canyon is and are more than welcoming to tourists. There are standard town amenities, such as restaurants and coffee shops, as well as more unique experiences, such as a walking path on Hole Street and access to structures that are hundreds of years old.

Bozouls, France, is considered a safe place to live or visit. This charming village offers a peaceful atmosphere, beautiful scenery with its famous canyon, and a tight-knit community. Residents enjoy a relaxed lifestyle surrounded by picturesque landscapes including the giant hole, making it an appealing choice for those seeking tranquility in France.

Since Bozouls is a flight or long train ride away from the most popular French city tourist destinations, visitors should take advantage of their traveling and explore more than just this one beautiful city. Bozouls is part of the Aveyron region, which is filled with valleys, castles, and other remarkable old towns. Aveyron crosses into the Cevennes National Park, home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.

What to Do in Aveyron

Aveyron is an ideal destination for an authentic break in the South of France. This region in southern France is a mosaic of valleys and old towns where you can still smell food in a lively street market and enjoy a buttery croissant in a crowded café; it is also home to the famous Roquefort cheese.

Aveyron is just one hour drive away from Montpellier. Here, the landscape and the quiet atmosphere encourage people to take it slowly, sip some wine on a terrace, and enjoy the view of the hills. It is a land that was inhabited very early by man; Romanesque churches, castles, and picturesque villages show the local respect for heritage.

Some of the standout features in a tour of the region include Belcastel, Villefranche-de-Rouergue, and Conques.
Belcastel is a picturesque village located on a hill that has been declared one of the most beautiful towns in France. Villefranche de Rouergue is a bastide town built around its main square and characterized by striking architecture, while the Romanesque Abbey and its treasure in the village of Conques are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

FAQs

Why Is Bozoul, France So Special?

This ancient village in Southern France sits on a limestone plateau and has been teetering on the edge of a giant hole, without totally crumbling in on itself, for about 1,000 years. On the lip of a lush cliff in Aveyron, Bozoul is a place exempt from logic.

What Is the Bozouls Hole?

Once recognized as one of the seven wonders of Rouergue, the “Trou de Bozouls” or the Bozouls Hole is a natural cirque, a horseshoe-shaped canyon, formed by the erosion of secondary limestone from the Causse Comtal, sculpted over time by the Dourdou River. This is why Bozouls Hole attracts amateur and professional photographers as the best place for unique photos.

Are There Any Historic Attractions in Bozouls?

Yes. This beautiful French town that dates back to medieval times was an old stomping ground of the Knights Templar and it still wears the traces of its prehistoric and Roman history with pride. Old ruins, Sainte Fauste church, and Celtic sculptures are just some of the attractions.

How to Get to Bozouls, France?

The easiest way to reach Bozouls is by plane. EasyJet operates flights to Montpellier from London, and from there, it’s a two-hour car journey to the region. Another option is to travel by train, changing in Paris. Once there, follow the Hole Street or The Rue de Trou to get to the Trou de Bozouls.

What Else Is There to See Near Bozouls?

Apart from the geological marvel that is Bozouls, the Aveyron area is part of the Cevennes National Park and is home to several beautiful castles. Belcastel, Rodez, Villefranche-de-Rouergue, and Conques are some of the unmissable landmarks in a tour of the region.

8 Best Adults-Only Mediterranean Cruise Packages | Deck, Sun, Cocktails, and… Peace & Quiet!

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

I’ll be honest, since my children have grown and are now adults, I love nothing more than an adults-only trip. Where I once looked for kids clubs and splash pools, I now look for peace and quiet and good cocktails. And when it comes to cruising, I look for that relaxation and time away from kids, more so than on any other kind of trip.

I’ve been on family cruises and, while they are great, there’s nothing like cruising in quiet and with adult company only. The Mediterranean is a beautiful place for cruising, full of lazy stop-offs, swim stops, and historical land excursions. Most kids wouldn’t like these kinds of laid-back, low-key cruises anyway. All the more for us adults to enjoy!

To get you started on which Mediterranean cruises to try for an adults-only cruising experience, here’s my pick of the seven best options.

8 Best Adults-Only Mediterranean Cruise Packages

1. Variety Cruises

Unexplored Greece

This is one of the most laid-back and casual cruises I’ve ever been on around the Mediterranean. This Variety Cruises exploration of the small, lesser-visited Greek Islands begins in Athens; stops off at Amorgos, Ikaria, Serifos, Lipsi, Iraklia, Patmos, and Kalymnos; and ends back in Athens. Aboard the Pan Orama, which has capacity for 48 guests, is slow-paced, and is easy going.

There’s no dress code for dinner, no set place you have to sit for meals, and there’s plenty of free time to wander around the islands or book an excursion if you want, but there are some essential nude cruise tips you should follow. There’s a sun deck on board and a bar, but your time mainly revolves around swim stops and island life. These lesser-visited Greek Islands don’t have ports big enough for large cruise liners, so there are fewer tourists around, which makes every stop peaceful and relaxing. Cabins are comfortable, if a little basic, but you don’t spend much time in them; there’s too much to discover on the islands and in the quiet little secluded bays where you’ll stop off for a swim in each day.

2. Virgin Voyages

French Daze & Ibiza Nights

Beginning and ending in Barcelona, Spain, this seven-night Virgin Voyages cruise stops off at Marseille in France, Cannes, Mallorca, and Ibiza in Spain. Cabins range from the basic insider cabin to the mega rockstar quarters, though to be fair, the basic insider cabin is pretty rockstar as it is. These cabins sleep up to four people, with bunk beds, and are very comfortable and verging on luxury.

Don’t let the bunk beds throw you off, though, Virgin Voyages is a strictly over-18s-only cruise line, so the four berth cabins are for four adults. The mega rockstar quarters is something else, with its own private hot tub and a taste of what life is like for a movie star. Ships have spas, swimming pools, fitness suites, running tracks, nightly entertainment, and even a tattoo parlor. The ships have everything you’d want from a top-class resort, so it’s almost a shame there are no at-sea days on this cruise. It’s one of the best cruise lines in the world.

3. Emerald Cruises

French & Italian Rivieras

Setting off from the port of Rome, this 8-day cruise with Emerald Cruises takes you to Corsica, Calvi, Portofino, Menton in France, and ends in Nice. On board one of Emerald Cruises’ luxury yachts, there’s room for 100 guests in a range of very comfortable cabins. The terrace suite is stunning and includes your own little sun deck with loungers, but even the most basic stateroom is a cut above other cruise cabins.

Life aboard the yacht is a low-key affair that centers around the sun deck, bars and restaurants, and the swimming pool, but there is also a wellness area with a spa. What I found really impressive about this cruise is that almost all of your meals are included. All breakfasts, all dinners, and six lunches are provided on board, which is quite unusual for a cruise line.

4. Scenic Cruises

Authentic Andalucia

Beginning in Malta, this Mediterranean cruise with Scenic Cruises stops off at the island of Gozo, Trapani in Italy, Carloforte, Menorca, Formentera, Cartagena, Marbella in Spain, Tangier in Morocco, Portimao in Portugal, and ends in Lisbon. I liked the laid-back pace of this cruise and it stops at some glorious destinations. I also liked that flights to and from the UK were included.

This is an all-inclusive cruise, which I found unusual, but it’s basically just like any all-inclusive resort on the sea. Each guest receives butler service while all food and drinks are included. Excursions are also included in the price of the cruise, which does mean you’ve paid for all excursions up front. This is an expensive cruise and if you don’t like going on the land excursions, it isn’t for you because you’re paying for them no matter what. But for anyone who likes to do everything on offer on their cruise and likes to keep the drinks flowing, this is a great option.

5. Virgin Voyages

Adriatic Sea & Greek Gems

Virgin might just be the best-known cruising company offering adults-only cruises and one look at their ships shows you why. This cruise with Virgin Voyages begins in Athens and stops off at Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, and ends back in Athens. There are 2 at-sea days so you can make the most of everything the ship has to offer, from swimming pools and spas, to arcades and karaoke.

There’s even a record shop on board so you can pick up some vinyls while you sail. It’s all about relaxing and having fun adult-style — whatever that means to you. So if all you want to do is lounge in the sun on the deck, there’s plenty of space to do just that, but if you want to sing karaoke and spend time in the casino, this cruise has you covered.

6. Viking Cruises

Ancient Mediterranean Treasures

This 8-day cruise around the Mediterranean with Viking Cruises begins its journey in Istanbul in Turkey before stopping in Troy and Ephesus and then moving onto Rhodes in Greece, Crete, and ending in Athens. Life aboard the Viking Ocean ship is geared towards adult entertainment and includes a spa, fitness center, shopping, a beauty salon, a theater, a cinema, and restaurants.

Cabins and suites are all comfortable if a little basic. They are hotel standard, though, not quite luxury level. There’s an indoor and an outdoor pool with plenty of sun deck areas for sunbathing. There’s plenty to do on board the ship, but there are no at-sea days on this cruise, so unless you want to skip one of the land excursions, you’ll be packing in the delights of the ship around your adventures. There’s a strict no-under-18s rule on Viking Cruises, so you’re sure of an adults-only experience.

7. P&O Cruises

Mediterranean 18 Nights

If you know anything about P&O Cruises, you’ll know they are not a strictly adults-only cruise line, however, they do reserve a couple of their ships for adults-only voyages. This Mediterranean cruise is quite long at 18 nights, but it does depart and end in the UK, sailing you all the way to the Med and back. Because there’s quite a way to sail from the UK, the first stop-off is on day 5 and is in Cadiz in Spain. From there, the ship stops at Valencia, Ajaccio in France, Genoa, Rome, Naples, Gibraltar, and Lisbon before heading back to the UK.

There are plenty of at-sea days to enjoy the spa, swimming pools, art gallery, theater, and restaurants and bars. Cabins are stylishly decorated and some have verandas. With a capacity for 2,094 guests, this cruise falls somewhere between small-boat intimacy and large-liner luxury.

8. Virgin Voyages

The Irresistible Med

Set sail on an unforgettable adventure aboard the opulent Scarlet Lady by Virgin Voyages on the 7-night Irresistible Med round-trip voyage. It’s a wonderland of luxury and fun akin to a thrilling roller coaster ride, but way classier.

You’ll be port-hopping from the beautiful streets of Barcelona to the romantic corners of Toulon, cruising to Marina di Carrara, Cagliari, and Ajaccio, and ending your journey under the balmy sunsets of Ibiza. With mind-blowing cuisine, non-stop entertainment, and so much more, you’ll keep returning to Virgin Voyages.

9. Saga Cruises

From Classical Greece to Ancient Egypt

Departing from Dover, UK on the Spirit of Discovery,  this all-inclusive Saga cruise to the eastern Mediterranean is a chance to trace ancient Greek, Roman, Ottoman, and Egyptian civilizations.

With chic interiors and bespoke works of art, along with an Art Deco-style Lido deck pool, this ship exudes an avant-garde feel. Standout features include the cruise line’s first purpose-built theatre, a swish spa, and a library touted as one of the largest at sea.

Even though guests must be 50 and over and despite the well-worn jokes, Saga ships are no floating rest homes.

Pro Tip: On adult-only cruises, avoid disruptive behavior like loud parties, excessive drinking, or inappropriate attire. Be mindful of fellow passengers’ preferences, follow ship rules, and enjoy the relaxed ambiance without creating disturbances.

If you plan a cruise around the Caribbean, there are adult-only Caribbean cruises also!
