8 Best Interstate 10 Roadside Attractions In Texas

8 Best Interstate 10 Roadside Attractions In Texas

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

You’re probably familiar with the phrase “Everything’s bigger in Texas.” While that may or may not be true, Texas makes a point to let you know exactly how big the state is as soon as your wheels roll across the state line. When you cross into Texas from Louisiana on Interstate 10, you’ll be greeted with a sign informing you it’s 23 miles to Beaumont and 857 miles to El Paso. If you had doubts about Texas indeed being big, that sign is there to squash them.

It would take about 12 hours to traverse Texas without stopping, and I don’t know any gas tanks (or electric vehicles) built for that kind of marathon driving. Whether you like to break up a long stretch of driving with an hour stop or a 2-day stop, below I’ll detail my favorite spots along Interstate 10 in Texas — an I-10-erary, if you will.

Note: Interstate 10’s path through Texas will treat travelers to hot weather most of the year. The eastern through central parts of the state tend to be humid; this switches to a dry heat once you hit Junction, where the landscape changes from Hill Country green to juniper-dotted limestone outcroppings. If you’d rather avoid the heat, spring and late fall are the optimal times for a Texas road trip.

Keep in mind that the first two cities are not only two of Texas’s largest cities, but they’re also two of the largest cities in the United States. San Antonio and Houston are major metropolitan areas with multiple freeways and heavy traffic, so unless you stick close to the interstate on your pit stop, plan to add substantial time to your layover.

Now let’s get rolling, starting with the two big cities.

Note: My trip to Beaumont was part of a hosted media visit. All opinions are my own.

My 8 Favorite Interstate 10 Roadside Attractions In Texas

1. San Antonio

Along Interstate 10, check out Friedrich Wilderness Park. Owned by the City of San Antonio, this public park offers 10 miles of birding, hiking, and walking trails of varying difficulty. The easier trails are gravel paths, and the more difficult trails are steeper with rocks to navigate. If you have mobility restrictions, even the easier trails may prove challenging.

If you’re up for a longer stop, Six Flags Fiesta Texas is right off the interstate. Other fun activities adjacent to 1-10 are iFly indoor skydiving and Andretti Indoor Karting and Games.

To explore more of San Antonio, plan on an extended day trip or one (or more) overnights. San Antonio is a popular convention city popular with tourists who usually have the River Walk and the Historic Pearl on their radars.

Pro Tip: If you’re looking for a splurge, the Hotel Emma is an unforgettable experience. The industrial touches that remain from the brewery it once was, combined with cloudlike luxury bedding and turndown service that includes macarons from nearby Bakery Lorraine, is pure indulgence.

Visitors to downtown San Antonio will most certainly want to visit the Alamo, but don’t stop there: The other four missions (covered by our own Michelle Snell here) are less commercial and more photogenic. The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas.

2. Houston

The Houston Heights neighborhood is right on the interstate. If you’re looking for shops, restaurants, or just a place to grab coffee, historic 19th Street offers many choices. Local Foods serves fresh salads and sandwiches that won’t make you too full and sleepy when you start driving again. If you need to stretch your legs, Donovan Park is just around the corner.

Houston is home to many museums, such as the Houston Museum of Natural Science and Space Center Houston, both of which made TravelAwaits contributor Janie H. Pace’s list of things to do in Houston with grandkids. If you’re looking for outdoor space to get some exercise or walk your dog, there are a lot of parks to explore.

3. Columbus

Columbus is about an hour’s drive west of Houston. This stop is perfect if you prefer to plan road trip stops away from big cities.

Columbus has a paved downtown area with several historic buildings. If you’re able to pop into the Colorado County Courthouse, the green stained-glass dome will make you feel like you’ve rolled into the Emerald City. The building is also beautiful to see from the outside.

Other things to do include the Santa Claus Museum and the Live Oak Art Center. If you’re a fan of quirky roadside attractions, don’t miss the third-largest Live Oak in Texas. That might sound a little cheesy, but even in third place, the 70-foot-tall tree is still impressive.

El Paso Museum of Art

4. El Paso

El Paso is located on the westernmost tip of Texas. If you seek a quick outing to help you stretch your legs, El Paso has several free museums that keep you out of the Texas summer heat: the El Paso Museum of History, the El Paso Museum of Archeology, and the El Paso Museum of Art.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find a network of easy- to moderate-difficulty trails at Franklin Mountains State Park. El Paso Parks and Recreation also has several free parks with paved paths that might be better suited to visitors with mobility restrictions.

El Paso has a great zoo focused on education and conservation. Fun fact: This is the zoo that established “name a cockroach after your ex for Valentine’s Day.” The concept has caught on and many zoos nationwide have followed suit, but it all started here.

Pro Tip: Most of Texas is on central time, but El Paso is on mountain time, so if you plan to stop here, don’t let the time difference throw you off.

Downtown Beaumont is very walkable. The museums (two free and two paid) are all within walking distance of each other.

5. Beaumont

Beaumont is a small east Texas town established during the oil boom. Beaumont has a variety of free activities near the highway.

Stop for a couple of hours and visit the free museums in downtown Beaumont: the Fire Museum of Texas and the Art Museum of Southeast Texas. Texas Energy Museum and Beaumont Children’s Museum are nearby but aren’t free.

Cattail Marsh Scenic Wetlands and Boardwalk and the Botanical Gardens at Tyrrell Park are located a short drive from downtown (and near each other, so you can easily do both.)

If you stay overnight in Beaumont, there are plenty of hotel choices dotted along I-10. Hungry travelers will find no shortage of local eateries, familiar franchises, and fast food. Tia Juanita’s Fish Camp, a delightful blend of Mexican and Cajun flavors, is a don’t-miss.

Editor’s note: If you want to make it a weekend in Beaumont, Kim Croisant has you covered.

Boerne, Texas
Boerne’s Miracle Mile has almost endless shopping and dining options.

6. Boerne

It would be easy to fill a weekend or more with activities here, but there’s also a solid selection of things to do in Boerne to fill a couple of hours. Boerne’s Miracle Mile, the shopping and entertainment district, is an excellent place to get your legs moving after a long car ride, although the temptation to stop in the stores will be strong. The Miracle Mile also has plenty of places to stop for a meal or coffee.

Boerne’s visitor’s center offers a self-guided art walk and a historic walking tour. Boerne City Lake Park and the Cibolo Center for Conservation are both fun outdoor spaces to play in. Some of the activities at Cibolo Center for Conservation are fully accessible, and while the nature trails are not difficult, mild slopes and uneven terrain may prove difficult for those with mobility restrictions.

Pro Tip: Check Visit Boerne’s events calendar in advance of your visit. There’s always something cool going on that will make you wish you’d planned a longer stay.

Kerrville Arts and Cultural Center
If you’re looking for a break to stretch your legs but want to stay indoors (and away from the hot Texas sun) Kerrville has some indoor options geared toward art lovers.

7. Kerrville

Kerrville is a great place to enjoy being outdoors. The Kerrville River Trail, a bike and pedestrian trail, is a great way to explore the Guadalupe River on foot, or on two wheels if you’ve brought your bicycle. Kerrville also has a nice selection of city parks. If you’re a fan of quirky roadside attractions, check out the Empty Cross or Stonehenge II in nearby Ingram.

If you prefer to stay indoors, the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center has three galleries with rotating exhibits. Also consider stops at the Museum of Western Art and the River’s Edge Gallery.

If you are staying overnight on a summer weekend, check out Crider’s Dance Hall in nearby Hunt. They do a fish fry on Fridays followed by a Saturday night rodeo and dance.

Historic Fort Stockton in Texas

8. Fort Stockton

My kids and I discovered Fort Stockton when we planned it as an overnight spot on a westbound road trip in 2018. We’d picked this West Texas city because of the robust selection of chain hotels and gas stations right off the highway.

We were pleasantly surprised to find a good selection of things to do in Fort Stockton. We wished we’d had more time, so we went back a couple of years later and dedicated a day to exploring the town. Museums include the Annie Riggs Memorial Museum, Old Pecos Jail Museum, and historic Fort Stockton. If you stay overnight, I recommend stopping at the Gray Mule Saloon, which is a historic building turned wine bar.

If you’re just doing a quick gas and go, don’t miss Paisano Pete, the 11-foot roadrunner in downtown Fort Stockton.

Editor’s note: Here’s more on all the lovely things to do in Fort Stockton.

Welcome Surprise On I-10

Whether you’re looking to experience Texas culture or just trying to get through the state, these stops along Interstate 10 just might add some extra spice to your trip — and leave you saying, “I sure didn’t know that was in Texas.”

Top Attractions Along I-10 in Other States

California

Some of the best attractions along I-10 in the ‘‘Sunny State’’ include Joshua Tree National Park, Cabazon Dinosaurs, iconic roadside attraction from Pee-wee’s Big Adventure in Palm Springs, or the kitschy shops and fascinating folks of the Venice Beach Freak Show.  Kids will enjoy Disneyland where they can gaze upon Sleeping Beauty’s Castle or ride the Space Mountain in Tomorrowland.

Of the above, my favorite is Joshua Tree National Park which is renowned for its otherworldly landscape, characterized by its namesake Joshua trees, rugged rock formations, and star-filled skies. Visitors can hike, rock climb, stargaze, and immerse themselves in the desert’s unique ecosystem.

Arizona

You can take a scenic cruise through Saguaro National Park or visit the epic Titan Missile Museum dedicated to rocket technology and the Pima Air and Space Museum, one of the largest air and space museums in the country and the world’s largest airplane boneyard.

Mississippi

The Brazil Sand Dunes That Transform the Desert Into a Thousand Blue Lagoons

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

Every rainy season, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil undergoes an incredible transformation: its pristine white sand dunes are seemingly flooded, overrun by gorgeous blue lagoons that springs up overnight.

Brazilian sand dunes, notably in places like Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, are popular for their striking beauty and unique landscapes. Visitors are drawn to the vast expanses of shifting sands, vibrant freshwater lagoons, and the opportunity for thrilling activities like sandboarding.

The Amazing Brazil Sand Dunes

Located in the Maranhão state in northern Brazil and running along the Atlantic coast, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is home to miles of beautiful white sand dunes. The park’s name translates from Portuguese to “bedsheets of Maranhão,” a reference to the sprawling smooth sand dunes.

The park runs along more than 40 miles of coast and stretches inland for another 3o miles. With such a large expanse of sand and nearly no vegetation, it would be easy to assume this park is classified as a desert. However, deserts, by definition, receive less than 10 inches of rain in a year, and Lençóis Maranhenses National Park has an average rainfall almost five times that.

For the first half of the year, the sand dunes are the site of constant rainstorms. This rainfall gathers in the valleys between the dunes, creating an entire lagoon system that encompasses miles of interconnected leftover rainwater. Mid-year, when the water has reached its peak, the lagoons can reach an amazing depth of 10 feet.

An aerial view of the lagoons.
Pakawat Thongcharoen / Shutterstock.com

Incredibly, these temporary water sources are not devoid of life, despite their unique method of formation. Some of the lagoons attach themselves to permanent water sources, such as nearby rivers, and fish freely move between the permanent and the temporary waters.

Once the rainy season has ended, the heat of the sun works fairly quickly, evaporating all the rainwater lagoons in the span of just a few months. The dunes are once again the area’s only fixture, returning to their status as the “bedsheets of Maranhão,” until the next year rolls around and the cycle begins again.

It really is an incredible place that doesn’t look like it’s from this planet.

Visitors interested in exploring the dunes and lagoons are encouraged to stay in São Luís, the capital of Maranhão. Though the city is located a few hours away from the park, there is a system of tourist accommodations and daily bus routes that make travel from the city to the park convenient.

Once inside this beautiful place in Brazil, visitors travel via foot or Jeeps with a guide to ensure they do not get lost in the miles of identical dunes. If visiting in a month with high water levels, tourists are welcome to take a dip in the lagoons, which can reach temperatures in the high 80s, thanks to the constant beating sun.

Biodiversity in Lencois Maranhenses

Although seemingly barren, the dunes host 133 species of vegetation that have adapted to the salty and sandy environment. Lilies and bromeliads bloom during the rainy season, adding a touch of color to the monochromatic landscape.

As for animals, all sorts of species crawl out of the bedsheets when the lagoons are formed. The wolffish spend the dry season dormant, but after the rainy season, they emerge in the pools, just like other fish that reach the lagoons through connected riverways.

The mangrove and dune ecosystems are also home to four endangered species that include the scarlet ibis, the neotropical otter, the oncilla, and the West Indian manatee.

People of Lencois Maranhenses

The indigenous people sought refuge here, escaping the harsh droughts of the Sertão Nordestino. Driven out from their territory by the aridity, the Lençois “desert” appeared as an oasis to them.

Today, approximately 30 families that live from fishing, livestock, and tourism, populate Queimada dos Britos and Baixa Grande,  the two restinga vegetation areas located within the dune field of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.

Both areas are designated as the Primitive Zones of the park, where visits are limited to minimize environmental impact and motorized vehicles can be used only by the local population.

Best Hotels in Flagstaff Guide

Lots of considerations go into deciding where to stay when visiting this area of Northern Arizona. You might be simply looking for a one-night stop along your Route 66 road trip or you are looking for a home base that offers easy access to Grand Canyon National Park. These are the top things you should think about when choosing your Flagstaff hotel.

Location

Downtown Flagstaff has lots of historic charm and lively dining establishments. You’ll want to consider whether you want to stay right in the action during your Flagstaff visit, or if a property a little outside of downtown might offer the relaxing atmosphere you prefer.

Properties like the Weatherford Hotel and Hotel Monte Vista will be right in the middle of the Flagstaff action. These spots are better for adults who want to enjoy the nightlife offered there. Noise travels in these historic buildings and you’ll want to consider requesting a room on a higher floor if you might be disturbed by the live music that continues into the wee hours of the morning.

There are quite a few properties located along Route 66 just outside of downtown Flagstaff. We like these for a more chill, relaxed vibe but they still have easy access to the breweries and nightlife if you wish. The Americana Motor Hotel and the High Country Motor Lodge both have a quirky, retro vibe and communal outdoor spaces that many travelers enjoy after a long day on the road.

Family-Friendly Accommodations

When traveling to Flagstaff, AZ with kids or a larger group, you’ll want to find a property with rooms that are bigger than standard hotel rooms. The apartment suites at Little America Hotel Flagstaff have a full kitchen which is very useful when feeding little ones.

These freestanding buildings offer the privacy that you crave after a day of traveling and lots of opportunities to get out and explore the outdoors. This spot is great for extended family get-togethers as they have cabins that sleep up to 16 people.

Amenities

If you are visiting Flagstaff, AZ in the summer months, you’ll want to know whether the property you select has air-conditioned rooms as it gets quite hot, even at night.

Another thing to look at is whether the property has a year-round pool or a seasonal pool. There’s nothing worse than showing up at a hotel and finding out the pool is closed for the season.

On-site dining can be super helpful when you are visiting Flagstaff. Not having to leave your hotel property to find somewhere to eat can make everything much more simple. A few hotels on this list like the Drury Inn and Residence Inn even have breakfast included with your stay.

Reviews

It’s always a good idea to read what other travelers have to say about a property before you visit. You might find out information that’s not included on the hotel’s website like what rooms have the best views and whether the property’s happy hour is worth checking out.

Best Hotels in Sydney Guide

There is so much to do in Sydney that its imperative you book a suitable accommodation option for you. After all, you don’t want to spend the entire day exploring the city to then come back to a subpar room that doesn’t give you the rest and relaxation you so desperately deserve—and need!

In order to ensure your hotel meets your desired criteria, keep these four factors in mind.

Location

Sydney is Australia’s largest city. So it probably isn’t a shock that the location of your hotel can make all the difference. Luckily, with the city’s extensive public transportation system, getting to different parts of the metropolis is fairly straightforward. However, if you don’t want to waste time and money on trains, buses, or taxis, then you’ll want to choose a hotel in a central location.

Hotels in the city center will come with an elevated price. But the convenience of being able to walk to restaurants, shops, and Sydney’s popular landmarks makes up for the heightened cost. If location is a huge priority for you, then look for hotels in Sydney’s CBD, as that’s where you’ll find the majority of Sydney’s must-visit attractions.

Price

As with any city destination, the price of hotels in Sydney can vary significantly. You can find budget-friendly hotels with limited amenities or more luxurious, expansive hotels with all the bells and whistles.

Before looking into Sydney hotels, it’s best to generate a rough budget so you know how much you can typically spend per night. Think about the activities you wish you take part in, the attractions you want to visit, and the meals you’ll be eating while spending time in the city.

Prices in Sydney are understandably more expensive than in other parts of Australia. So, your day-to-day activities can ultimately bring down your overall hotel budget.

Amenities

As we mentioned previously, hotels in Sydney can come with both limited and extensive onsite amenities. Some hotels only offer standard rooms, while others have onsite restaurants, bars, pools, and even casinos.

Keeping in mind that there is so much to do in the city, it is very likely you’ll be spending the vast majority of your day exploring all it has to offer. So, are extra amenities really necessary?

If you do like to return to your hotel for an afternoon dip or prefer having a restaurant on hand, then look for a hotel with these amenities on site.

For those who instead like to head out from morning until nightfall, then these extra facilities will be somewhat wasted. You may be better off simply booking a more budget-friendly accommodation that provides you with a room and not much else.

Reviews

One of the best ways to get a feel of a hotel before staying there is to check out previous reviews. See what customers have said about their stay at your potential hotel options, paying close attention to any issues they may have encountered.

Reviews can tell you a lot about the hotels location, its cleanliness, whether it offered a relaxing stay, and how you can expect to be treated upon arrival. Obviously no two stays or experiences will be the same. But you should get a brief idea of whether the hotel will meet your standards.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are Hotels in Sydney Expensive?

For the most part, yes, hotels in Sydney are expensive. Not only is Sydney a city, but it is also Australia’s most popular city, meaning supply and demand are in full effect. Hotels—especially those in the city center—come at a premium, so visiting the area isn’t going to be the most budget-friendly trip you’ve ever been on.

With that being said, you can find more affordable accommodation options in the city and its surrounding suburbs. However, you will need to sacrifice location or amenities.

Where is the Best Place to Stay in Sydney?

The best area to stay in Sydney will come down to your personal preferences. For example, those who want to be within walking distance of Sydney’s popular attractions will find the Rocks and Circular Quay an ideal location.

Families would be better suited to Darling Harbour. Budget travelers will find affordable accommodation in Potts Point and Kings Cross. And foodies will appreciate the range of restaurants in Surry Hills.

For the best all-around area, then you can’t go wrong with Sydney’s CBD, as it is central to all major attractions and plays host to a range of restaurants, bars, and shops.

How Far is Sydney Airport From the City Center?

Sydney Airport is 8 kilometers from Sydney’s CBD. In light traffic, you can drive from the airport to the city center in 25 minutes. However, on weekends or public holidays, the drive could be significantly longer.

Conclusion

There is something so special about walking the streets of Sydney, taking in the Opera House, the harbor, and, of course, the city’s imposing skyline. Sydney—Australia’s most well-known and most-visited city—as a whole offers travelers an array of wonderful experiences. So, it’s no surprise people return time and time again—who can blame them?
