9 Things To Know Before You Visit Nepal Plus Bonus Tips

9 Things To Know Before You Visit Nepal Plus Bonus Tips

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

Nepal is a tiny, landlocked country surrounded by two giant neighbors, China and India. When it comes to adventure travel, Nepal is one of the best destinations in the world, with challenging trekking routes, breathtaking glaciers, and picturesque valleys. But even if you have no desire to spend a single day in hiking boots, there is so much to see and do in this unique country. But there are definitely some things worth knowing before you visit.

9 Things To Know Before You Visit Nepal

1. Where Is Nepal?

Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked country in South Asia, lying along the southern slopes of the Himalayas, with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north, and India to the south, east, and west.

2. How Do I Get There And What About A Visa?

Most visitors fly into Tribhuvan International Airport, in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. Only a small number of international airlines fly to Nepal, and they fill up fast, so if traveling over peak periods, book flights well in advance.

If entering by land, there are numerous border crossings between India, in the south of Nepal, and these can be navigated fairly easily, especially when organized through tour agencies.

Getting a visa for Nepal is easy. You can get your visa on arrival if flying or if entering by road (for most nationalities). A 15-day visa costs $25, a 30-day visa costs $40, and a 90-day visa costs $100.

3. Getting Around

Buses are the main form of public transport. Local buses run pretty much everywhere and will stop for anyone, but I’m going to say that while incredibly cheap, I don’t recommend them. Tourist buses are the most common way to get between cities and are more comfortable and less crowded than the local busses, but journeys can be long and arduous. Roads are shocking, traffic is appalling, buses stop frequently for meals/tea breaks, and a breakdown or flat tire is almost guaranteed. It once took me 7 hours to travel the 124 miles from Kathmandu to Pokhara!

Flying is the transport of choice for many visitors, and it’s definitely the fastest way to travel. When faced with the choice between a cramped 24-hour bus ride, or $100 for an internal flight, I know which one I’d choose! Bear in mind flights are weather dependent and are often canceled at the last minute.

4. Where To Stay

Accommodation is varied and plentiful. Nepal is no stranger to tourists, and no matter where you go, you’ll find a place to rest your head. The greatest variety of options can be found in the most popular tourist spots of Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan, with everything from luxurious 5-star accommodations to basic guesthouses. Prices vary substantially from region to region, but for the most part, accommodations are remarkably affordable. A teahouse on a trek can cost as little as a few dollars a night, while a safari lodge in Chitwan could set you back $250 a night.

5. Trekking

Eight of the world’s 10 highest peaks are in Nepal, as well as countless trekking routes. If you want to trek you’ll need to organize a “Trekkers Information Management System” card, and for more remote treks you’ll need a special permit. If you’re booked on a group trek, which I recommend, the tour operator should organize this on your behalf. Some interesting, unfrequented treks include the Manaslu Circuit, the Gokyo-Cho-La Pass, the Tsum Valley, the Kanchenjunga Trail, the Rolwaling Trail, and the Nar Phu Valley.

When you think of Nepal and trekking, Mt. Everest probably springs to mind, and if that’s the case, you can read more about that here. But trekking isn’t the only way to see Mt. Everest. Travelers can take a one-hour round trip flight from Kathmandu to see Mt. Everest from the air; a fantastic trip for photographers, as the airlines only sell window seats, ensuring everyone gets a great view.

When visiting Nepal, don’t miss a few amazing national parks. Chitwan National Park is a biodiversity hotspot renowned for its lush jungles, diverse wildlife, and conservation efforts. Home to Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinos, and hundreds of bird species, it offers safaris, canoe rides, and jungle walks for an immersive wildlife experience. The park’s rich ecosystem attracts nature enthusiasts worldwide.

Other national parks in Nepal worth visiting are Sagarmatha National Park, Langtang National Park near Kathmandu, Khaptad National Park in the Far Western Region, and Rara National Park with the stunning Rara Lake.

TIMS Cards and Trekking Permits

The Nepal government has authorized the Nepal Tourism Board to implement a system called the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) to ensure the safety of popular trekking routes and control illegal trekking operations.

Trekking Permits are mandatory in Nepal for all kinds of trekkers whether they are traveling in a group or solo.  Permit fees depend on the specific trekking regions.

6. Nepal Is Much More Than Mountains

Nepal might be famous for its mountains, but there are plenty of other amazing things to do that don’t include trekking. Nepal’s bustling capital, Kathmandu, is a historic city where three ancient kingdoms meet. Highlights through the Kathmandu Valley include the Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Patan Durbar squares (formerly royal kingdoms), the ancient Swayambhunath, and Boudhanath Buddhist stupas, as well as Pashupatinath Hindu temple. Outside of the Kathmandu Valley, Lumbini is the birthplace of Buddha, Pokhara is a vibrant and picturesque city known for Phewa Lake, and there are several safari parks like the national parks of Chitwan and Bardia, where you can see wildlife or go paragliding and bungee jumping

7. Language, Religion, And Customs

Language

Nepali is an Indo-Aryan language, similar to Hindi spoken in India (Indian travelers should understand enough to get around). English is a secondary language spoken mostly in large cities like Kathmandu. Outside Kathmandu, English is spoken less, but getting around is still manageable. Simply smile and say Namaste, which is a traditional Hindu greeting meaning, essentially, “the divine spirit with me, bows to the divine spirit within you” or “my soul recognizes your soul.” You’ll say Namaste to everyone, and everyone will say it to you, but unlike at the end of your yoga class back home, here it’s used for pretty much everything — a greeting, goodbye, and even “pardon me, you’re in my way.” When saying Namaste, you hold your hands as if in prayer. Another good word to know is “thank you,” dhanyavad, pronounced: dahn-ya-vahd.

Religion

About 80 percent of Nepal’s residents are Hindu, 10 percent are Buddhist, and the rest are a mixed bag. The major religious festivals are a cross-pollination of both Hinduism and Buddhism. You’ll see as many Hindu symbols and temples around Nepal as you will statues and devotions to the Buddha.

Some Dos & Don’ts

If you want to be respectful in Nepal, there are a few golden rules: Don’t touch people on the head (the most sacred part of the body), don’t point with your finger (use a flat hand or your chin), don’t eat or pass food with your left hand (considered dirty and unhygienic), show respect by using both hands to give or receiving something (including money), remove your shoes before entering a temple or monastery, and always walk around a stupa clockwise.

8. Food And Drink

Nepalese cuisine is absolutely delicious, and it’s possible to have a filling and delicious meal for a few dollars. My favorites are momos, Nepal’s version of dumplings, made with curry spices, ground meats, veggies, or cheese, and served steamed or fried.

If you’re craving a taste of home, the restaurants in Thamel cater to travelers, and you’ll find plenty of familiar meals catering to western taste buds.

I love street food, but Nepalese street food has been known to cause stomach issues in some travelers! I’d advise you to stick to well-maintained and busy restaurants or, better still, take a reputable street food tour! Try Backstreet Academy’s Secret Street Food Tour to visit some of Kathmandu’s local haunts.

Tap water is not filtered or purified in Nepal. It’s best to buy bottled water.  Avoid fresh fruit juices on the streets, and any fruits and veggies washed in tap water. Perhaps have bottled water to brush your teeth.

9. Toilets!

While westernized hotels and restaurants, and most tourist attractions have western toilets, you’ll find most local establishments and public restrooms have squat toilets. If you are used to sitting on a “porcelain throne” at home, squatting over a hole in the ground can be a little off-putting at first. But squat toilets are common throughout this part of the world, so the sooner you get used to it, the better.  Carry a packet of tissue and hand sanitizer.

Some Bonus Tips:

Plan for Domestic Flights Delays

Flight cancellations and delays occur frequently because of bad weather, including to and from Lukla, a gateway to the Everest Base Camp trek, and Jomsom, a gateway to the Mustang region. However, it still beats taking the long-distance buses which take ages to get to your destinations.

Nepali Rupees Cannot Be Exchanged Outside of Nepal

Denominations greater than 100 rupees notes are restricted in Nepal. International travelers coming to Nepal from neighboring countries who hope to change their currency once in Nepal are advised to carry smaller denominations only.

Getting From the Airport To Kathmandu City

To get from the airport to the city center in Kathmandu, taxis or airport shuttle buses are your options. Make sure to agree on a fare with the taxi drivers before starting your journey.

Avoid Fake Tourist Guides

Keep an eye out for overly-friendly locals at popular tourist spots, who may approach you and begin “sharing’ the history of the site.” Often these are unofficial touts, and once finished with your “tour,” they’ll demand money for their time. If someone approaches you and starts a lecture, politely cut them off and ask how much their tour will cost, if they’re reluctant to give a specific price or say “pay me what you think it’s worth,” walk away.

Don’t Buy Knives

The famous “kukri” curved knife is still part of the Nepalese army’s weapons, and it’s almost 15 inches long. While you may be keen to buy one to show off to friends at home, it’s risky. Exporting a knife from Nepal usually isn’t a problem, but that may be a different story when your flight lands at home.

Eating “Buff”

You’ll see “buff” as an item in many Nepali restaurants, it means buffalo. Cows are sacred for Hindus and most refrain from eating them, eating buffalo instead.

Prayer Wheels And Prayer Flags

Prayer Wheels: These large, cylindrical objects are found in front of Buddhist temples and are inscribed with mantras, which are supposed to help balance your karma when you spin them.

Prayer Flags: When walking around temples or in the mountains, you will see strings of multicolored flags waving in the breeze. They are called lung ta (wind horse) and are traditional Tibetan prayer flags. The flags always have five colors: blue, white, red, green, and yellow, which represent the five elements, and are inscribed with Buddhist prayers.

You’ll find prayer flags for sale in many shops, so take home some for your loved ones. Just don’t let them touch the ground, it’s disrespectful.

Don’t Talk Politics

Nepal had a decades-long, brutal civil war in the mid-’90s, was a monarchy until 2008, and is still a relatively new republic. Keep this in mind and avoid bringing up uncomfortable political topics when conversing with locals.

The 2015 Earthquake’s Effects On Nepal’s UNESCO Sites

In 2015, Nepal suffered a devastating earthquake which the country is still recovering from. The country is rebuilding, and everywhere you look you’ll find construction.

Kiawah Island vs Hilton Head: 8 Key Differences Between These Two Islands

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

If you’re looking for a relaxing island getaway but don’t want to spend hours traveling to a remote destination, look no further than South Carolina. The Palmetto State is home to multiple islands, as well as some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, all set along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

While Myrtle Beach might be the most well-known destination in the state, the islands of Kiawah and Hilton Head are two hidden gems, perfect for a weekend respite. Both islands have miles of beaches, high-end golf courses, and a variety of outdoor activities.

But which one is better? That depends, of course, on what you want out of your vacation. After all, we’re talking about resort islands; they’re both terrific. It can be tough to choose one over the other.

In the spirit of informed decision-making, then, here’s everything you need to know to decide which island is perfect for your next vacation.

Kiawah Island vs Hilton Head – 8 Key Differences

1. Location

The islands of Hilton Head and Kiawah are both located along the coast in the southern portion of South Carolina. Kiawah Island is the smaller of the two, with an area of a little over 13 square miles, and is about a 45-minute drive from Charleston, South Carolina. The more southern island, Hilton Head, is the larger of the two (covering 69 square miles) and is about a 2-hour drive from Charleston. If you’re traveling north to the island, Hilton Head is only 35 miles from Savannah, Georgia.

2. Accessibility

Luckily, you can easily access both Kiawah and Hilton Head from the mainland. Using a single causeway connection to the mainland, travelers can drive directly to each location. That’s right! No boats necessary.

Charleston contains the closest international airport to Kiawah, and the Savannah airport is the closest to Hilton Head, but you can easily get to either island from either city.

The most direct route to Kiawah from Charleston takes you down Highway 700 West and through Johns Island. Eventually, you’ll turn off Betsy Kerrison Parkway via roundabout and onto Kiawah Island Parkway, the causeway that will lead you to the island. If you’re traveling via private jet, landing at the Charleston Executive Airport on Johns Island will give you an even shorter drive to the island.

Tourists warn that the drive to Kiawah involves narrow and unclearly marked roads, so be sure to have detailed instructions before you start your drive to the island. This drive can be especially difficult at night, so it’s best to plan for daytime travel.

When traveling to Hilton Head, you can either fly directly to the island or drive from the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Highway 278 will take you to Hilton Head and is the road you will have to use whether you are coming from Savannah or Charleston.

Because of Hilton Head’s relatively large size, it’s a good idea to rent a car when visiting the island. There are ride-share options and plenty of bike rentals, but little to no public transportation. Because there are so many attractions spread out across the area, it’s easiest to have your own car.

Kiawah is much smaller and easily traversable by bike. However, if you think you’d prefer driving to the island destination, you must rent a car before arriving on the island. There are no rental companies on on this quaint U.S. island— that’s how exclusive the island is! If you’re staying at the resort, there is a complimentary shuttle service that will take you anywhere on the island.

3. Accommodations

One of the biggest differences between these two islands is the availability of accommodations. Hilton Head has numerous commercial hotel options, including everything from Best Western to high-end oceanfront resorts. Rooms start at around $100 per night and go up to $400 or more per night (depending on the level of exclusivity you’re looking for). There are also private vacation homes and villas available for rent, starting at around $100 per night. Again, the price depends on the location and relative opulence.

The accommodations on Kiawah, on the other hand, are very limited. This island is all about exclusivity, which is maintained with restricted access to visitors (all of Kiawah is set up as a private, gated resort). There is one main resort on the island, the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, that offers a variety of room options.

You could also book a room in the resort’s luxurious Sanctuary Hotel (starting at around $130 per night) or stay in one of the resort’s villas (starting at around $170 per night). There are some privately owned rentals available, but not nearly as many as there are on Hilton Head.

Pro tip: To get the best deal and best room for your needs, it’s better to book as far in advance of your trip as you can. This is true for accommodations on both islands.

4. Cost

A vacation on either of these islands is going to carry a high price tag. You can find booking packages, free perks, and other deals, but the exclusivity of both places comes with a cost.

Because Hilton Head is bigger and offers more options for accommodations, dining, and activities, you’ll most likely find slightly cheaper prices on this island. Kiawah is all about luxury and relaxation every step of the way, and with fewer options all around, you’re going to pay more.

5. Dining Options

If you’re looking for a variety of culinary options, Hilton Head has got you covered. The island offers everything from casual fast food to fine dining, with more than 200 restaurants to choose from. Even the pickiest eater will find something to enjoy on Hilton Head. Some of the best spots to try are Crane’s Tavern, The Crazy Crab, and the Old Oyster Factory.

At the Kiawah Resort, you can choose from a dozen or so restaurants and cafés located on the resort grounds. Otherwise, there are a handful of casual to high-end places scattered throughout the island.

The Atlantic Room is one of Kiawah’s best fine-dining spots for an amazing seafood dinner. This restaurant offers a great view in addition to its stunning menu. If you’re looking for something more casual, Beaches & Cream (located in The Sanctuary Hotel) offers breakfast and lunch sandwiches, baked goods, and coffee, as well as tasty ice cream treats.

6. Attractions

You aren’t going to find large commercial attractions on either Hilton Head or Kiawah Island. The main focus in both locations is gentle recreation — enjoying the great outdoors and the wonderful scenery that surrounds you.

That includes, of course, golf. The whole island of Kiawah is set up as a private golf resort, offering some of the best courses in the whole country. There are five championship courses with more than 90 holes to choose from. But remember the exclusivity of the island — to book a tee time, you’ll have to go through the resort.

Both Kiawah Island and Hilton Head are premier golf destinations in South Carolina. The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort and Harbour Town Golf Links at the Sea Pines Resort, are rated in Golf Magazine’s and Golf Digest’s Top 100 Courses in the U.S.

Rated as one of America’s top 10 beaches by The Travel Channel, Kiawah Island Golf Resort lies along 10 miles of uninterrupted Atlantic Ocean beach. Featuring two award-winning tennis complexes, a variety of restaurants and lounges, and a family-oriented nature program, it offers a lot in addition to its outstanding golf.

On the other hand, the Sea Pines Resort boasts serene Lowcountry landscapes and five miles of amazing Atlantic coastline. With 23 clay tennis courts, three magnificent golf courses totaling 54 holes, eight dining establishments, and over 50 lagoons, the Sea Pines Resort offers an array of recreational and dining experiences.

In general, the amenities and facilities are beautiful at Kiawah, but that comes at a premium price. The Sea Pine Resort is still a golfer’s paradise, but there are arguably more things to do outside the golf resorts.

If you’re looking to spend all your time on the greens, be sure to check out the golf-centric packages when booking your stay.

If you aren’t as interested in golf, Kiawah has some of the most beautiful beaches in the country as well. Kiawah Beachwalker Park is one of the nicest spots to relax or swim. On the beach, you’ll also find a snack bar, shower stalls, restrooms, a boardwalk, and beach chair and umbrella rentals. There is a small admission fee (either $5 or $10, depending on the month).

The Kiawah Island Nature Center within Night Heron Park is a nature epicenter. With its bike and hiking trails, kayaking opportunities, walking tours, and variety of local wildlife, this is the ideal destination for nature lovers.

If you’re worried about traffic or are simply looking for a way to better immerse yourself in the environment, there are more than 30 miles of bike trails and 10 miles of bikeable beaches across Kiawah. There are bike rental shops all over the island, making it easy to enjoy the scenery at your own speed.

When building your dream Kiawah vacation, if you’re not staying at the resort, make sure your accommodations offer resort privileges. Otherwise, you won’t have access to certain areas and activities on the island, and that isn’t any fun.

Hilton Head is another golfer’s dream destination, with more than 24 world-class courses to play. Unlike Kiawah, Hilton Head offers both public and private courses, making the island slightly more accessible to tourists.

When you’re finished on the greens, you can pick a spot to relax along the island’s 12 miles of uninterrupted beachfront. Burkes Beach and Islanders Beach are two great spots to soak up the sun and lounge in the sand. Burkes Beach is easily accessible by car or bike path, and has basketball and tennis courts nearby — plus a dog park for those who like to vacation with their furry friends in tow. Islanders Beach is a great stop for the whole family, with its playground, picnic pavilions, grills, restrooms, and showers.

Hilton Head also offers plenty of other water-based activities. You can spend an afternoon fishing, taking a dolphin-watching cruise, kayaking, surfing, sailing, or waterskiing.

Biking is encouraged on this island as well, which has over 60 miles of paved trails. On a bike, you can easily travel to the beach or into town without the stress of traffic or parking.

If you need a break from the outdoors, there are a variety of shopping, spa, and self-care options to take advantage of.

7. Best Time To Visit

While the summer months are the most common time to visit both Hilton Head and Kiawah, it’s possible to enjoy these islands at any time of the year. Both have a similar tourism pattern that follows the change in seasons. This pattern affects room availability, price, and crowds on the islands.

When traveling in the spring, you can expect a flowering, picturesque setting. Both islands are in full bloom with temperatures just warm enough for swimming and enjoying the beach, but not too hot. Springtime highs from March through May range from the mid-60s to the mid-80s, with minimal precipitation.

As you might expect, summertime is the busiest season for both of these islands. Each year more than 2.5 million people visit Hilton Head, with most passing through during the summer months. Kiawah’s population is around 1,400, which increases to 8,000 to 10,000 people per day during the summer.

From June through August, beaches on both islands will be packed, reservations might be more difficult to make, and accommodations will be more expensive and harder to find — but that doesn’t mean you should avoid traveling to these islands during this time.

In the summer, all outdoor activities and vendors are in full swing, the ocean is at the perfect swimming temperature, and the sun sets later in the day, allowing for more time to enjoy your vacation. The area experiences highs in the mid-80s to the mid-90s. The summer is also the rainy season for both of these islands, averaging around 6.2 inches of rain per month (with August being the rainiest).

8. Off-Season Options

Some say fall is the best time to visit the islands. The summer weather extends well into this season, with highs in the mid-80s in September and dropping to the upper 60s and lower 70s in November. The number of tourists drops after Labor Day, leaving you with excellent weather and smaller crowds. On Hilton Head, a number of fall festivals take place each year, whereas Kiawah only has one fall community event currently listed.

Don’t rule out the winter season as a vacation option. If you don’t mind chilly weather (highs in the mid-50s) and a calm and serene environment, this might be the time for you to book your stay. The winter season comes with very little traffic, hardly any tourists, and more housing options available for cheaper prices. It’ll seem like you have the islands to yourself.

Hopefully, this information will help you choose between the slightly larger, potentially more affordable island of Hilton Head and the exclusive, resort-focused Kiawah Island. Happy adventuring!

Planning a visit to Charleston? Be sure to book a table at one of the charming Southern town’s best waterfront restaurants.

And if you’re headed to Savannah instead, these historic places, hidden gems, and great dining experiences won’t disappoint.

Musical Roads in the US And Around The World | Highways That Will Sing To You

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

While we were visiting my sister in Rosamond, California, my husband and I accidentally came across a road that literally sang to us. We were so amazed that we immediately wanted to know where else we could recreate the thrill. Happily, we discovered that there was another one on a section of Route 66 near Albuquerque, New Mexico, built six years after the California road. While researching this article, I even found out that a third one was also built in the United States five years after the New Mexico version. Thus I am beginning another quest, like the one I did about the 7 Places To Find The Rare And Unusual Crested Saguaro.

Musical roads are created from strips or grooves on roads that make sounds when a car crosses them. Rumble strips are used to alert drivers that they’re getting too close to the edge of their lanes. The other kind, transverse strips, cross the entire road and are used to signal drivers to slow down. It wasn’t long before enterprising individuals realized that it doesn’t have to be noise that would alert drivers. In fact, varying the length and distance of the strips or grooves from each other can often create melodies when cars roll over them. Such music will not only alert but also entertain drivers as well as their passengers.

Musical Roads in the US And Around The World

Lancaster, California

It was in Lancaster, California, a bigger city 20 minutes from Rosamond, where we had the most delightful detour from a Costco errand. A sign that said “Civic Musical Road” was between 30th and 40th streets on Avenue G, just off Highway 14. There we found a quarter-of-a-mile section of the road that merrily sang the “William Tell Overture” when we drove over it at a steady 50 miles per hour.

Originally built on Avenue K on September 5, 2008, it was paved over just 18 days later after nearby residents complained about the level of noise. The city recreated it on October 15 on Avenue G, in the far left lane of the westbound side of the road, 2 miles farther away from any residence. It is named after Honda Civic, the brand that sponsored and featured it in its commercials at the time. The rhythm is recognizable, but the intervals are a little too far off so the resemblance is slight. Still, the tune is exhilarating. It thrilled us no end, so we drove over it several times!

The next year, on the way back from the home of Bill’s sister in Kansas, we made it a point to look for the other American Musical Road in New Mexico. Labeled NM (or Route) 333, it is a bit hard to find. But we finally did, between miles 4 and 5, eastbound on a two-lane diversionary stretch of the historic U.S. Route 66 just off I-40 near the town of Tijeras, New Mexico. This one plays “America the Beautiful” if you drive at a steady 45 miles per hour. The melody was so clear, and the song is so classically inspiring that we also drove through it again and again and again!

Originally funded by the National Geographic Society, it was built in coordination with the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The goal was to get drivers to slow down by bringing excitement to an otherwise monotonous stretch of highway. By 2020, however, the tune was already fading. A spokesperson said, “There are no plans to restore the musical highway. The cost is outrageous, and they have since restored portions of the roadway and removed all of the signs. Unfortunately, this was part of a previous administration and never set in stone to keep up with the maintenance of this singing highway.” It is quite sad that politics may have interfered. But the road still sings, so catch it while you can!

We have not gone to this most recent find but we read that it was built by an alumnus of Auburn University’s College of Engineering in Alabama. The musical road plays just the first seven notes of the Auburn Tigers fight song, “War Eagle.” Thus this section of South Donahue Drive has been renamed the “War Eagle Road.” With support from Auburn University and the National Center for Asphalt Technology, it welcomes both fans and rivals of the team when they are approaching the campus. Unlike the one in New Mexico, this musical road is welcomed by the public as a permanent fixture. We hope to visit it soon!

Around The World

And after that, we will go to other musical roads elsewhere in the world. There are now a total of 43 aside from the ones in the U.S.: one in Denmark, another in Hungary, three in South Korea, three in China, one in Iran, one in San Marino, one in Taiwan, one in Indonesia, and 30 in Japan. A previous musical road in the Netherlands has been removed. The original one was dubbed the “Asphaltophone.” It was built by two Danish artists in 1995 in Gylling, Denmark. But it is Japan that appears to have had great success with them. As of 2016, 30 permanently-paved 250-meter (820-foot) sections called “Melody Roads” exist throughout the country, including one near Mt. Fuji. It is time to visit Japan!

Getting the Most Out of Musical Roads

There are some caveats when it comes to getting the best out of musical roads. Drivers should hit the rumble strips head-on to get the full volume effect and not miss out on any grace notes that might have eroded over time at the edges of the highway.

Even though it’s counterintuitive, it helps to roll up the windows to best experience the song being played, as most of it is transmitted through the chassis of the vehicle, rather than the air surrounding it.

From the engineers’ viewpoint, orchestrating the construction methods necessary for these musical roads demands precision because even the marginal errors can become magnified when repeatedly run over by vehicles.

One such example is America’s original musical road in Lancaster, CA. When the crew failed to properly parse the width of the grooves in addition to their spacing from each other, the road built by Honda to promote the 2008 Honda Civic became unintelligible.

The effect was so jarring that residents convinced the town to move the road farther from their homes, where it was promptly rebuilt using the same flawed methods.

As your car eventually exits a musical road, there’s a collective sigh of contentment. Even though the melody has ended, the memory lingers, leaving behind smiles and laughter. For those who have driven on a musical road, it’s an experience they won’t soon forget—a symphony of sound that turned an ordinary drive into a musical adventure.

FAQs

What Is a Musical Road?

A musical road or a musical highway is a section of a road, which when driven over rumble strips causes a tactile vibration and audible rumbling. This rumbling is heard within the car as well as in the surrounding area, in the form of a theme song.

How Many Musical Highways Are There in the United States?

There are three musical highways in America – “War Eagle” musical highway in Auburn, AL, Route 66 musical highway built by National Geographic in Tijeras, NM that plays “America the Beautiful”, and Civic Musical Road in Lancaster, CA that sings the ‘‘William Tell Overture’’ form Gioachino Rossini’s opera.

Which Countries Have Singing Roads?

Musical roads exist in Japan, Hungary, the USA, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Iran, Indonesia, the UAE, and Argentina. With several dozen musical road sections, Japan tops this list by far, while the USA, South Korea, and China come in second with three such roads.

Is “America the Beautiful” the Only Tune on the Route 66?

Actually, no. After the rendition of “America the Beautiful,” molded into the most famous highway in the nation, there is another small stretch of music bumps that plays the Nationwide jingle as a nod to the corporate sponsorship.

How Do Rumble Strips Sing?

Rumble strips have to be spaced so that if driven over at 45 mph for one second, the car would hit 330 rumble strips to produce an E note. Matter of fact, anything that vibrates 330 times in one second will produce an E note.

Best San Diego Family Resort Guide

There’s a lot to consider when visiting San Diego with kids. You’ll likely be looking for a property that has plenty of kids’ activities but is also somewhere that gives you a bit of a break so you really feel you are on vacation. These are our top considerations when booking a San Diego family vacation:

Location

San Diego is quite spread out with the downtown San Diego Gaslamp district, Balboa Park, the quaint Coronado Island, and the coastal area of La Jolla. So it can understandably be tough to decide where you want to stay during your San Diego visit.

Consider what kinds of activities your family is looking to do while you are in San Diego. If you plan to spend a few days at LEGOLAND California Resort, definitely book one of the hotels on-site as they offer early access to the theme park along with over-the-top LEGO-themed rooms.

If the beach is your main focus, you’ll likely want to consider a property with direct beach access like the La Jolla Shores Beach Resort or Hotel del Coronado. It’s so much easier to pop over to the beach for the morning and then head back to your room for an afternoon nap when your room is nearby.

Kid-Friendly Amenities

Lots of properties welcome families but some truly go all out for kids. The “Leave it to Loews” program offered at Loews Coronado Bay Resort provides all the baby gear you’ll need during your stay so you can pack light and not worry about forgetting something.

The Four Seasons also does a great job of providing all the baby and toddler items you need during your stay but don’t want to pack in your suitcase.

Kids’ Club Programs

The Fairmont Grand Del Mar has a comprehensive kids’ club program that allows parents to get a bit of a break while the kids are busy making new friends. Kids can learn all about underwater creatures at Hotel Del Coronado’s Ocean Explorers program and then head out to see what they can find on the shore.

It’s often tough to find kids’ clubs for little ones who aren’t potty trained but the Omni La Costa Resort has a nursery for kids from 6 months to 3 years old where you can get up to two hours of care per day. This is a great option for those looking to take advantage of the resort’s spa facilities.

Activities for All Ages

The last thing you want when vacationing with your kids is to have to feel like a cruise director. It’s great when the property you choose offers a wide variety of activities for all ages of kids like movie nights on the beach and family yoga sessions.

The LEGOLAND properties go over and above in this area, as they offer character meet and greets, nightly shows, and family dance parties.

Spacious Rooms

It’s not particularly relaxing when you have to stay in a tiny hotel room with your kids and all their luggage. Families should look for properties with separate bedrooms so that there’s space for a child to take a nap while the rest of the family doesn’t have to tiptoe around.

If you are visiting San Diego for more than just a few days, having a kitchen or kitchenette in your room is helpful, especially when you have little kids in your group. If someone wakes up early and is hungry, you can grab something from the fridge to tide them over until the rest of the family is up. It’s also a great way to save some money on dining out.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the best beaches in San Diego?

La Jolla Shores tops the list of best beaches in San Diego for families for its gently sloping sand and calm waves. Coronado Central Beach at the foot of the Hotel del Coronado is another popular spot for families looking for a beach day as the beach is quite wide, offering plenty of space for sand castle building.

Silver Strand State Beach is another family favorite as it has some great tidepools for exploring.

You know that the Southern California beaches are top-notch, but what else is there to do with kids in San Diego?

Lots of families enjoy visiting the San Diego Zoo as kids of all ages can learn about wildlife conservation while meeting the many animals that make their home there. You also might want to consider a visit to San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park in nearby Escondido. Here you can take a wildlife safari to see giraffes, rhinos, cheetahs, and more.

Head to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park to learn the history of San Diego back to the 1800s, dine on some top-notch Mexican food, and shop in some vintage-inspired stores.

When is the best time of year for visiting San Diego?

The weather in San Diego is pretty great year-round. If you are looking to spend a day at the beach, summer is your best bet though the water of the Pacific can still be quite cold even during these months. The winter in San Diego is usually mild with a rainy day here and there so it’s a perfectly acceptable time to visit.

Families looking to visit when the crowds are lower should consider the spring or fall. These months typically offer sunny, mild days that are great for exploring a hiking path or going on a bike ride.

Do you need to rent a car when you visit San Diego?

The quick answer is yes. There’s quite a lot to do in San Diego so you’ll want the flexibility of being able to explore on your own. Unless you plan to spend your whole visit at your resort, you’ll want a car to be able to visit the San Diego Zoo or check out some of the beaches.

What to Look for When Choosing a Resort in Negril Jamaica

When choosing a suitable resort in Negril, Jamaica, keep these key factors in mind:

Location

Want to be a hop, skip, and a jump from cool attractions, buzzing marketplaces, mouth-watering eateries, and those must-see cultural spots? Then location is your key to unlocking a vacay filled with all the adventures. Choosing the right spot means less time commuting and more time sunbathing, exploring, and, of course, sipping on chilled rum punch.

Amenities

When looking for a resort, don’t just focus on the basics. Explore the extra features and amenities that can enhance your stay. Some resorts offer personalized spa treatments, a wide range of dining options with local and international flavors, well-equipped fitness centers with classes, and facilities for water sports.

Also, pay attention to the details in your room, like the level of comfort, the views, and how well the technology works, to make your trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Type of Travel

Think about your travel squad. Packing little ones? Look for spots where kids can have fun while you lounge in peace. In love or just feeling romantic? Seek out hideaways that have candlelit dinners on the beach.

Riding solo or with your merry band of misfits? Aim for places where the vibe is electric, and the adventures are waiting. Your travel crew shapes your stay, so pick a place that tailors to everyone involved.

Reviews and Ratings

Go beyond surface-level ratings here; read in-depth reviews to understand the experiences of past guests. Be sure to pay extra attention to comments about the resort’s response to feedback, the consistency of service, and the upkeep of facilities. Look for patterns in reviews to get a realistic expectation of your potential stay.
