Things to Do on Vashon Island | Spend a Perfect Day Enjoying Local Food and Attractions

Things to Do on Vashon Island | Spend a Perfect Day Enjoying Local Food and Attractions

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

Vashon Island is not well known outside of Washington State, but it is just a short ferry ride to discover this jewel of Puget Sound. Conveniently located in proximity to Seattle, Tacoma, and the Kitsap Peninsula, there are three Washington State Ferry options to get there.

The ferry terminals are at the north and south ends of the island. I like to catch the Point Defiance-Tahlequah Ferry in the morning and return on the Fauntleroy-Vashon to Seattle. You can also catch the Fauntleroy-Southworth ferry, which puts you at the Kitsap Peninsula.

Vashon is perfect for a day trip getaway, but it is easy to extend your stay for a weekend. It makes a perfect base to explore the area. The three ferries allow easy access to Seattle without all the traffic, as well as Tacoma and Olympia to the south. From the Kitsap Peninsula, it is an easy drive to Olympic National Park. I enjoy visiting year-round because even though its winters are full of typical Pacific Northwest rain, the temperatures are mild.

Amazing Things To Do On Vashon Island

Vashon Island is so eclectic. Enjoy a small-town experience with a cute walkable downtown Vashon and a park with a weekly Vashon Island farmers market (with farm stands that accept alternative currencies so all islanders can shop there). The island has so many wide-open spaces and lovely beaches, so plan for some outdoor time with Vashon Adventures, where you can rent kayaks and bicycles.

Burton

For any visit when touring the Puget Sound area, coffee is always the first stop. After leaving the ferry head to the little town of Burton, which is basically just a crossroads. I always try to support the small, local coffee stands that abound in this region. The Burton Coffee Stand is a cute little stop. It is eye-catching with the mosaic sign made by local artist Elaine Summers, founding member of the Vashon Tile Guild. I love how local businesses support one another. The stand sources its baked goods from the Snapdragon Bakery, an island favorite.

Also located at the crossroads is the Harbor Mercantile, but everyone calls it the Burton Store. It has been a store since 1908 and has a variety of everything. The Burton Inn and Spa is unique as the owner Therese Henning has over 23 years of experience in massage therapy and esthetics.

Dockton

Maury Island is connected to Vashon Island by a spit and is just one of the many beautiful Washington islands you can visit. Begin with a stop at Dockton Park with its lovely swimming beach and picnic area. It is a great location for an al fresco lunch, with plenty of picnic tables. Make sure to read the interpretive signs to learn about the history of Dockton.

You can also take a nice stroll through the mostly residential town on a history walk that includes multiple stops with exhibits. Note that the walk begins with a large hill and there are no sidewalks.

Maury Island Marine Park

Maury Island Marine Park is one of the largest undeveloped sites on the Puget Sound. It has one mile of shoreline. From the overlooks, there are jaw-dropping views of Mount Rainier, the Cascade Mountains, and the East Passage. There are hiking trails through rare stands of Pacific Madrone and the marsh. Keep an eye out for bald eagles and the great blue herons. And if you love exploring parks, you can always explore beautiful state parks near Seattle.

Point Robinson Park

Ten-acre Point Robinson Park is located on the east shore of Maury Island and is a must-see when visiting Vashon Island. It is famed for the Point Robinson Lighthouse built in 1914, but the park is so much more. The shoreline wraps around the point and is perfect for beachfront strolls and collecting driftwood.

It is also part of the Whale Trail, with fall and winter being the best time to see the resident orcas that feed on salmon. There are walking trails that explore the coastal woodlands. There are two Keeper’s Quarters available for vacation rentals, and although vintage, you can’t beat the view or beach access.

Pro Tip: For a unique place to stay, visit Fern Cove and stay at the remote Belle Baldwin House. It is a lovely historic home off the beaten path and with waterfront views. Point Robinson Park also has a beautiful lighthouse where you can spend the night.

Shopping

To explore Vashon Island fully, its shops are a must-visit. One of my favorites is Giraffe, a gift shop that sources ethically by stocking fair trade items from around the world. It is such an eclectic offering with housewares, food, clothes, and indigenous art. The Ravens Nest is a Northwest Coast Native Art Gallery and gift shop that sells both traditional and contemporary native art.

I always make a point to stop at small independent bookstores when I travel, and the Vashon Bookshop fits the bill. It is a cute shop with both new and used books. The Country Store and Farm is a general store that has been around for over 50 years. It is a true country general store with a little bit of everything plus outdoor gardens and a nursery. They carry Vashon Island items that make nice gifts or souvenirs.

And, of course, there’s the Vashon Farmers Market, run by the Vashon Island Growers Association. It’s been a mainstay since 1989.

Gather

Gather is what this space is all about. It is a gallery that showcases local artists with an event space that can be used for gatherings or to take a class. It is a great way to experience what makes Vashon so special. Visitors are welcome to come in and hang out if there is not an event. Owners Kathy Raines and Whitney Rose are an artistic mother-and-daughter team. They had a vision to share their love or art while creating a space where the community can gather.

Vashon Island Restaurants

To really get a sense of the food scene in Vashon, ask the locals, and they’ll help you discover places that are off the radar, like the Vashon Sugar Shack. The island has a diverse mix of restaurants and cuisine with something for everyone.

Vashon Baking Company

The Vashon Island Baking Company is known for its croissants. They make a variety of sweet and savory pastries out of house-made croissant dough. I dream about these pastries. They are so good.

Vashon Sugar Shack

I discovered the Vashon Sugar Shack quite by accident. I was at the baking company when the owner shouted out to a cantankerous gentleman sipping his coffee, “Chef, what’s for dinner tonight?” She then shared with me this hidden gem located across from the town grocery store.

Locals follow the business on Facebook or receive an email each day with the menu. Owners Hedy Anderson, the Caramel Queen, and Chef Wally Bell have created a unique culinary experience. Locals text their orders each day on the honor system so they know how much to cook with extra, of course, for the random drop-ins like me. You can take your food to go or eat outside on the picnic tables. Chef Wally is not cantankerous by the way; he just needed his morning coffee.

Pro Tip: Make sure to add a bottle of wine and some of Hedy’s amazing caramels. There is a reason why she is the queen.

Patty’s Place

Patty’s Place, home of Patty’s tamales, is a gem. Order breakfast all day and make sure to try the Tamale Huevos Rancheros, which my husband loved. I had a tamale plate. Get here early. They are open until 3 p.m. each day but on the busy Saturday we visited they were already sold out of some of the tamales. I love this place and its fusion of Hispanic and Asian cuisine plus breakfast. They do a great job of packing the food to go with everything you need. We picked up our meals to eat while waiting for the ferry.

The Hardware Store

The Hardware Store gets its name from the building it’s housed in, which is one of the oldest on Vashon and the original island hardware store. It is super popular for lunch and they don’t take reservations at this time. With its location right in town, you can get your name on the list and then pop into one of the local stores.

The food is upscale American. The lunch menu offers great burgers and salads, and locals love their buttermilk fried chicken strips. Dinner has more options stepping up classic dishes with more flavors. The food is just good.

Vashon Island is a treasure. There is something about getting on a ferry to travel to your destination that makes you feel like you are getting away from everything. (See the ferry sailing schedule for Vashon here.) Try to plan your visit around one of the many events held on Vashon Island, including their famous Strawberry Festival held each summer in July. Weekends can get rather busy, so weekdays are the best time to visit Vashon Island.

Pro Tips For Visiting Vashon Island

When I travel, I love to discover unique places that you won’t find anywhere else. On Vashon Island, that is Nashi Orchards, famed for its Perry, which is its pear version of cider; it is very good. Their newest product is Korean Giant Non-Alcoholic Perry, a delicious sparkling juice with no added sugar. Also new is their tasting room with artfully designed seating both inside and outside.

Also, check out the Maury Island Winery and the Palouse Winery for beautiful wine-tasting venues. Beer lovers will enjoy the breweries on Vashon Island — particularly Vashon Brewing, a community brewpub with lots of events. Cider fans can head over to Dragon’s Head Cider.

End your visit by returning along Highway 109. The Hidden Coast Scenic Byway is on the Olympic Peninsula and you can easily extend your stay by visiting the Olympic National Park. It is not too far away and I added time at Lake Quinault and Ruby Beach with a day trip from Seabrook.

Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, in 2023, Vashon Island will be a vibrant hub of arts and entertainment, featuring numerous galleries and events that highlight the rich artistic diversity and local culture.

Vashon Island has something for everyone, so why not come and explore its offerings?

What Is Vashon Known For?

Vashon is perhaps most well-known for its art and entertainment. The island is bustling with artists and performers, and the galleries and shows are not to be missed. Another thing Vashon is famed for is its fine dining, probably some of the finest in the Pacific Northwest.

Exploring the downtown Vashon shops and must-visit landmarks, embarking on hikes, and attending festivals and events will undoubtedly provide you with a unique experience.

How Did Vashon Island Get Its Name?

The island got its name when George Vancouver first discovered the island in 1792 and named it after Captain James Vashon. The name Vashon is primarily a male name of Anglo-American origin that means God Is Gracious, Merciful. In the 1900s, strawberries were commercially very important for farmers on the island, and that lasted until the early 1980s.To celebrate the rise of the strawberry, the inaugural Strawberry Festival took place in 1909, but it was not until 1912 that it became an annual event. Today there are very few commercially grown strawberries on the island but the residents still celebrate the Vashon Strawberry Festival in their own unique Vashon way.

What Is There to Do on Vashon Island for Dogs?

The island is ideal for dogs because of its quiet, rural setting. Moreover, dogs are free to roam, and a leash is not required most time. There are over 40 trails on Vashon Island where you can take your furry friend on a hike to explore all the sights, sounds, and smells of the island. We recommend visiting one of the downtown Vashon pet-friendly cafes or restaurants. Dog parks, dog-friendly businesses, and hotels are everywhere.

Visit the Spectacular ‘Mauritius Underwater Waterfall’ In The Middle Of The Indian Ocean

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

If you like to travel, you’ve probably seen all kinds of waterfalls — from the world-renowned Niagara Falls to the fleeting, spectacular so-called Firefall in Yosemite National Park. Chances are, however, that you haven’t seen a stunning underwater waterfall.

Off the coast of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean, there is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a spectacular waterfall submerged in the ocean itself.

The Mauritius Underwater Waterfall

The Republic of Mauritius is an island nation approximately 1,200 miles southeast of Africa. The republic has a population of 1.3 million, most of whom are of Indian descent. The rest of the people are of Creole, Chinese, French, English, and South African descent, CNN explains. The country’s official language is English.

This small Island in the Indian Ocean is situated on an ocean shelf that rises up from the ocean floor. From the island’s shore, there is a gradual slope leading out to a sudden 2.5-mile drop to the ocean floor, a Culture Trip article explains.

The “waterfall” is actually an optical illusion formed by sand and silt deposits sliding down the slope and then dropping into the abyss. As the CNN article explains, the “sand and silt on the ocean floor run off in a way that makes it look like they’re pouring down a waterfall — or like the entire island is being sucked down a vast drain.”

The Best Passport Covers (Review 2022)

It’s difficult to see this stunning underwater waterfall from the shore. To truly see what appears to be the flowing water, you need to be above the water, looking down. The good news is that tourists are welcome and helicopter tours are available to help them see the spectacular effect.

Other Natural Wonders to See

Let’s be honest: Traveling at least 9,000 miles is a long way to see one thing — no matter how cool it is. Fortunately, Mauritius has a number of attractions that make it an island paradise.

Pereybere Beach

For example, Pereybere Beach, the island’s website explains, is recommended for family swimming because it’s “a quiet place with a calm sea,” so it’s ideal for inexperienced swimmers. Note that although nudism is prohibited at the beach, topless sunbathing is allowed.

Le Morne Cultural Landscape

The waterfall illusion occurs off the coast of the Le Morne Cultural Landscape, marked by a basaltic monolith that sits at the end of the Le Morne Brabant peninsula. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it was used “as a shelter by runaway slaves, maroons, through the 18th and early years of the 19th centuries,” the World Heritage Site listing explains.

Black River Gorges National Park

Finally, no trip to Mauritius would be complete without visiting the 17,000-acre Black River Gorges National Park, made up of “rolling hills, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and unparalleled beauty of flora and fauna.” While visiting the park, you can visit Alexandra Waterfall and even hike to Black River Peak — the island’s highest point. Although different, the nature here is as stunning as it is on Socotra Island.

Know Before You Go

Mauritian borders have been open again since Mauritius lifted its COVID-19 entry requirements on 1 July 2022. Travelers, whether vaccinated or not, no longer need to take a test or self-isolate on arrival. Foreign tourists are granted visas for a cumulative period that does not exceed 180 days in a calendar year, but you can apply for a Premium Visa during your stay on the island.

Their Ministry of Health may ask for your blood sample either upon your arrival at the airport or at a later stage during your stay if you have traveled from a country where malaria is common. Otherwise, there are no malarial mosquitos on the island.

More travel information may be found here.

FAQs

Is it safe to dive in Mauritius?

Yes, it is. Diving is safe on all sides of Mauritius. The island is almost completely surrounded by a halo of coral that protects many of its bays and coves. The inside of that barrier reef is very shallow and calm which makes for some very good locations for beginner divers to snorkel in placid lagoons and shallows full of fish. Advanced divers can dive in stronger currents and rough seas or shark-infested waters.

Are there any other famous waterfalls in Mauritius?

Yes, there are. Hidden among the lush tropical terrain are some breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls. Often found in serene, isolated parts of the island, trekking to see the waterfalls is a perfect way to reconnect with nature, breathe fresh air, and surrender to a sense of calm and inner peace. Some of the more popular sites are Alexandra Falls, Tamarind Falls, Eureka Falls, Grand River South-East Waterfalls, and many more.

How safe is Mauritius for tourists?

With crime levels being low, Mauritius is a safe place for tourists. However, petty crime does occur, including pickpocketing and bag snatching. Walking alone after dark or using ATMs on the streets is not recommended. Banks, hotels, or shops are safe locations to withdraw cash. Also, make sure not to get conned over accommodation. There were cases of robbery and assaults in unregistered beachside bungalows.

How deep is the Mauritius underwater waterfall?

The shelf that Mauritius sits on is not deeper than 150 meters below sea level. But there’s also another section called the ‘drop-off’ that goes beyond the shelf’s edge where Mauritius underwater waterfall plunges an astonishing 4,000 meters into an unknown abyss. Due to this marine formation, there is a unique harmony of shades that creates the optical illusion captivating so many divers and other admirers worldwide.

Where is the largest underwater waterfall on Earth?

Located in the little slice of ocean between Greenland and Iceland is the gigantic waterfall known as the Denmark Strait cataract. Its height is approximately 11,500 feet, while, in comparison, the largest waterfall on land is merely 3,212 feet tall. The Denmark Strait cataract is formed by the difference in temperature when the freezing Arctic waters meet the slightly warmer Irminger Sea. When that happens, the slides right down through it to the bottom of the ocean. This phenomenon is the key to the functioning of the deep-sea ecosystem in the area.

Gospel Singer Bobbi Storm Faces Backlash for Trying to Sing on Plane

Most people seem to think that gospel singer Bobbi Storm’s behavior was wrong. At least, that’s what they’re saying in the comments of a video that surfaced over the weekend showing a Delta Airlines employee threatening to remove the Grammy-nominated singer from a flight.

While it’s unclear what flight they’re on or what city they’re in, what is clear is that at the beginning of the video, Storm is standing in the middle of the aisle telling the flight attendant that she is “charting right now on the Billboards,” but the flight attendant tells her to “sit down and be quiet.”

While she returns to her seat, she turns to the back of the plane and says, “I just found out that I’m up for two Grammys. My very first time, you guys.” As her fellow passengers applaud, she explains that she contributed to the song “We Can’t Forget Him” on the album “The Maverick Way,” which was nominated for the Best Gospel Album.

Then, the flight attendant interrupts her by asking, “Are you able to be quiet?” She tells him that people are enjoying her speech to which he replies: “I am not enjoying it, so I’m asking you can you please be quiet.”

For the remainder of their interaction, the two have a polite yet circular discussion about whether she’s able to be quiet. She avoids providing a direct answer and he suggests she must comply because he’s a “flight leader.” After the flight attendant walks away, Storm announces to the surrounding passengers that she’ll sing in a low voice and begins to sing. When she’s done, she plugs her album.

The video, which Storm shared on her Instagram channel, has generated more than 6,300 comments. Some of the most popular comments describe Storm as “egotistical,” a “narcissist,” and “inconsiderate.” In a comment that received more than 1,000 likes, the commenter wrote: “You held these people hostage and used God’s name in a manipulative manner. That man was just doing his job and you were being disruptive, period.”

Storm addressed the comments, writing that “no laws’ were broken and she had in fact sang on more than 50 flights in the past. She added that she wanted to sing because she “felt a pull in my spirit.” She said she saw the opportunity presented itself because they were waiting for crews to address a maintenance issue, so people were actually able to deplane. “[T]hat flight attendant really was out of order and did not have the authority to do what he was threatening,” she wrote.

In another video, Storm said that a Delta executive reached out to her about the incident and apologized to her. She added that she didn’t think the flight attendant should be “reprimanded” but she hoped he did “learn a valuable lesson about how to treat people.”

According to reports, Delta confirmed that it had been in contact with Storm and added, “For the safety of our customers and crew, it’s always important to follow crew instructions.”

Tips to Stay Active While Traveling for the Holidays

As you’re making your holiday travel list and checking it twice, don’t forget to add an essential but frequently overlooked item: ensuring you find ways to stay active during this bustling season.

With all the shopping, cooking, cleaning, decorating, wrapping, traveling, and visiting you likely already have on your agenda, it’s easy for routines such as taking a morning jog or an after-dinner stroll to fall by the wayside. But keeping up your physical fitness routine is just as important at this time of year as any other. That’s because exercise has a wide variety of benefits, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including improving brain health, managing weight, decreasing the risk of disease, strengthening bones and muscles, and increasing your ability to do everyday activities, to say nothing of its stress-busting abilities (something we can all use a little of during the holidays).

Importance of staying active during the holidays

Between cold weather in many locations, decreased hours of daylight, and particularly busy schedules, the holidays can be a perfect storm of letting usual routines fall by the wayside. But if you’ll be traveling, it’s particularly important to maintain your exercise regimen so that you can feel well at your destination, maintain your energy levels, and keep an even keel through any unexpected challenges that being on the road may throw at you. Keeping up some version of your usual fitness routine can also help counterbalance those special holiday indulgences so that you avoid excess weight gain and start off the new year on the right foot. Kaiser Permanente notes that even a simple 15- to 30-minute walk can burn calories and is good for general health.

Tips for getting exercise during holiday travels

So, with all the conflicting priorities on your plate, how can you ensure you work in time for a workout? Here are some helpful strategies:

Portable fitness ideas

Airport walkways. Heading to the airport for a flight to your favorite holiday destination? Airports essentially double as climate-controlled walking tracks, offering ample space for you to clock in your steps comfortably while waiting for your flight. Carrying your suitcase instead of rolling it and holding your luggage while doing squats are additional options for getting your blood pumping while waiting for a plane, train, or bus, says FitDay.

Compact exercise equipment. Want to add some variety to your workout? Pack some portable equipment, such as a jump rope or resistance bands, to use in your hotel room or at your host’s house. Jumping rope provides good cardiovascular exercise, while resistance bands are perfect for strength training on the go. Exercises such as banded push-ups, bent over rows, and split squats can provide a full-body workout in limited space such as a guest room or hotel room. Watch “Stay in Shape On the Go,” from Clench Fitness for a demonstration of a resistance band routine you can do in just a few minutes. (Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any new exercise regimen and to tailor the routine to your health and fitness level.)

Exercises using just your bodyweight for resistance, such as pushup, planks, lunges, squats, and calf raises, are another option that don’t require packing any additional equipment at all.

Active exploration. Eager to get out and about? Explore your home-away-from-home on foot, or rent or borrow a bike to get your blood pumping while you’re sightseeing. If you’ll be doing any holiday shopping at your destination, walk around the shopping center before going into any stores and opt for a more distant parking spot to get your steps in, says the CDC.

Plan active outings

Winter activities. As you’re gathering with loved ones, why not make the most of the season with some fun outdoor winter activities. Hit the slopes for some skiing, plan a family hockey game at the local rink or lake, take a snowboarding lesson, try snowshoeing in your favorite park, or find the nearest hill for some sledding.

Holiday fitness events. This time of year abounds with holiday-themed fitness events. Are you an avid jogger? Enter a local turkey trot or fun run. Have a cause that’s near and dear to your heart? Participate in a charity walk. Is something a bit more solitary your style? Try a virtual holiday-themed fitness challenge, which allows you to participate at a time and place that suits you while earning fun medals and, in some cases, supporting worthy causes at the same time. Or simply make a commitment to go for an after-dinner walk with a friend or relative each day at your destination to take in the neighborhood holiday decorations.

Active sightseeing. Are there any hiking trails or historical sites near your destination? Schedule a brief hike (make sure you bring sufficient cold-weather clothing, plenty of water, sunscreen, snacks, and gear for emergencies) or sign up for a walking tour.

Integrating activity into travel

As you sit down to plot out your holiday travels, create an itinerary that includes space for sightseeing, visiting with family and friends, relaxation, and physical activity. To ensure you have time blocked out for fitness, set aside a part of each day for an active undertaking — perhaps a morning stroll or an evening game of Ping-Pong with the family. If you will be selecting your own accommodations for your stay, try to choose lodgings that have onsite gym facilities or are near a park or other area where you can engage in some active outdoor recreation. And if you’ll be heading to an area that’s big on winter sports, consider giving one of the local mainstays a try to add a unique cultural twist to getting in your workout. Think curling or hockey in Canada or speedskating in the Netherlands.

If you’ll be traveling or staying with family and friends, group activities can keep everyone engaged. Try an easy family hike (the American Hiking Society can help you find a perfect hike near you), take a group stroll to look at holiday decorations in the neighborhood, or, if you prefer to stay indoors (or the weather scuttles your outdoor plans), find a dance class nearby to get your groove on. Setting up friendly family competitions or shared goals, such as taking a certain number of steps each day or trying a certain number of new activities in a week, can help everyone reach their activity targets.

And remember to set realistic goals: Ensure people of all different fitness levels can have fun and safely participate, be prepared with alternate options in the event that the weather doesn’t cooperate with any planned activities, and remain flexible. The aim is to stay active and enjoy your holiday travels, not to rigidly adhere to a workout regimen.

Mindful movement

With all the hustle and bustle of getting to and from your destination with your presents — and presence of mind — in hand, gentle, relaxing activities may be just what the doctor ordered. If you’re already getting plenty of vigorous exercise running to airport gates, sprinting to your train’s posted track, and lugging heavy shopping bags through the mall, try some restorative exercises. This can include the gentle movements of activities such as yoga, tai chi, or qi gong, or simply stretching for a few minutes after waking up and before going to bed. Many light routines can be found by searching YouTube for “beginner” plus the exercise you’re interested in trying (e.g., “beginner yoga.”)

Also, be sure to listen to your body and take downtime if you’re feeling run down or tired. Knowing when to take a step back and recharge is just as essential to your health as maintaining an active routine. This approach ensures you enjoy your holiday travels to the fullest, without compromising your physical or mental wellness.

“Sleigh” your holiday workout

With a bit of advanced planning, you can make staying active during your seasonal travels a joyful part of your holiday experience. So pack your sneakers and workout gear next to your gifts and festive attire and get ready to sleigh your holiday workout!

Between planning meals and excursions, vacations can start to feel like work. But when you’re at an all-inclusive resort, everything is taken care of and you don’t have to think about it. You don’t even have to leave the premises!

All-inclusives in the U.S., in general, aren’t like those in the Caribbean and Mexico. Club Med Sandpiper Bay (read on for details!) is the only truly all-inclusive resort in the U.S., but many other resorts offer all-inclusive packages that cover accommodations, daily meals, outdoor pools, other amenities, and fitness activities. Our travel writers shared their favorite all-inclusive resorts in the U.S. that specialize in everything from wildlife to wellness.

Leave your wallet and kick back by the pool with a cold drink at one of these U.S. all-inclusive resorts.

2. Red Mountain Resort

Ivins, Utah

SJ Morgensen

“Located near St. George, Utah, Red Mountain Resort is hands-down the absolute best place for nature-inspired relaxation. An oasis all its own, Red Mountain also offers Snow Canyon State Park literally right outside its doors and super close proximity to Zion National Park.

There are endless ways to reset here, including a plethora of onsite wellness classes, daily guided hikes, bicycle paths (and bikes), and optional excursions for more extreme outdoor fun. I loved wandering the exquisite grounds and walking the labyrinth, relaxing at the numerous fire pits, and taking in the night sky. There are also numerous pools and hot tubs as well for more relaxation. And, the cuisine is amazing!

It’s easy to get here with flights into St. George Regional Airport, or fly into Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, about 2 hours south.” — SJ Morgensen

3. Miraval Arizona

Tucson, Arizona

Meryl Pearlstein

“For renewal, refreshment, and the beauty of the high desert, Miraval Arizona is an all-inclusive wellness resort with no equal. The Tucson resort personalizes a program of activities and full service spa for each guest, taking note of fitness levels and individual interests.

Meals reflect the Southwest using local and often surprising organic ingredients to create delicious dishes. Beverages are included, although alcohol is additional. An extensive and varied schedule of complimentary fitness classes is offered. Each visit comes with credits to use toward spa treatments or for special activities like the horse whisperer program or hikes off-property. Rooms are very comfortable, many set in casitas or villas built with local adobe. This villa especially reminded me of the one all-inclusive resort in Barbados which I visited last year and loved.

What attracts people to Miraval? The resort allows you to be yourself, with an approach to wellness and mindfulness that acknowledges you, whether your desire is to stay busy all day long or to simply kick back, read a book, and take in the beautiful desert scenery.” — Meryl Pearlstein

4. The Lodge and Spa At Three Forks Ranch

Savery, Wyoming

Three Forks Ranch, Savery, WY
Kara Williams

Located on the border of Colorado and Wyoming, Three Forks Ranch offers the ultimate in intimate, luxurious, all-inclusive experiences. I visited the ranch resort set on 200,000 acres with my family as a hosted journalist several years ago in the winter months. My husband, kids, and I still talk about our incredible day downhill skiing on the resort’s private mountain. Carted to the top of the ski trails by snowcat and making turns in knee-deep powder while snowflakes swirled — just the four of us! — is the stuff that winter wonderland dreams are made of.

We also went snowmobiling and snow tubing in pristine conditions. Top that off with gourmet meals three times a day, upscale accommodations (just 11 rooms and 4 suites), a heavenly heated indoor pool, plus all spa treatments included in the room rate (yes, that’s right, no extra cost for massages) and you have a sublime vacation experience where your every need is met by gracious staff.

The resort is open year-round — it’s known for its fly fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking in the summer months. And now an increased focus on wellness includes even more fitness classes and a partnership with the Mayo Clinic for on-site wellness assessments.” — Kara Williams

6. The Lodge On Little St. Simons Island

Little St. Simons Island, Georgia

Phillip Murdaco

“Midway between Jacksonville, Florida, and Savannah, Georgia, St. Simons Island is one of the Golden Isles, beautiful barrier islands that hug the Georgia coast. Accessible only by boat, Little St. Simons Island (LSSI) is encircled by seven miles of beach. A haven for nature lovers, The Lodge on Little St. Simons Island is surrounded by wildlife, including over 250 species of birds.

Casual, family-style meals are served in the Hunting Lodge, where guests can learn about complimentary naturalist-led activities such as fishing, kayaking, hiking, birding, beachcombing, and more. Food, activities, and recreation gear are included, as are boat shuttles to and from the island. This one reminds me greatly of the all-inclusive resorts in Mexico And The Caribbean.

The ecolodge’s rooms and historic cottages only accommodate up to 32 guests a night. In fact, you can rent out the entire island! Book anywhere from six months to one year in advance.” — Laura Ray

7. Club Med Sandpiper Bay

Port St. Lucie, Florida

“Located between Orlando and Miami, Florida, Port St. Lucie is located on the St. Lucie River. We flew in to join our charity, which reserved this resort (exclusively for our group) for five days for five consecutive years. It gave us time to get to know the resort and region really well.

While the pelicans are abundant along the riverfront, we took great pride in finding them on our water excursions. The resort itself has multiple opportunities for outdoor activities. We love when the trapeze school is open and that they allow guests to help put on a show. We also enjoyed tennis, golf, archery, volleyball, and their fitness academy. And then relaxing with a hot stone massage.

Their sailing instructors are wonderfully patient, and, once you’ve got the hang of it, they’re ready to set you loose in the area in front of the resort. If that’s not fast enough for you, hop on a jet ski for even more excitement.

The most relaxing time is the sunrise yoga session. It’s a great way to center yourself before another big day.

My favorite excursion was a boat adventure tour. Split between multiple boats, we tried to get the captains to race without success. So we sat back and enjoyed the breeze and sun, riding through mangroves with a dolphin pod playing along. We spotted one manatee in the water and too many alligators along the shore.

Most of our interactions occurred either at the pool, resplendent with their signature red sun loungers, or at the Lucky Lime, the all-day dining taqueria. I really appreciated that their chefs were able to accommodate our dietary restrictions.

There’s plenty to do within the resort for your vacation, but if you’re interested in even more from central to southern Florida, you can rent a car and go exploring further afield.” — Gail Clifford

“I have nothing but fond memories of our family stays at Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Port St. Lucie on Florida’s east coast. It’s where my son, at around age 11, learned to waterski, performed in a circus trapeze show, and got his picture taken with skateboarding idol Tony Hawk.

Tucked discreetly on the St. Lucie River, it takes on the most daring family activities as part of its laudable sports program. Expert staff teach and train kids and adults at academies devoted to tennis, golf, sailing, paddle boarding, and other sports.

The entire Club Med staff makes the magic, turning your stay into a cultural experience informed by young, energetic gentils organisateurs (fondly known as G.Os) who hail from and have traveled all over the world. They are encouraged to sit with guests at meals — a good way for kids to learn about new places.

Speaking of meals, Sandpiper serves the best all-inclusive buffets I have ever tasted, heavily influenced by the brand’s French roots and the bounty of Florida seafood, fruit, and veggies.” — Chelle Koster Walton

8. Lago Mar Beach Resort & Club

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Photo Credit: Lago Mar Beach Resort & Club (REQUESTED PERMISSION 5/2)

“My favorite resort that feels like an all-inclusive is Lago Mar in Fort Lauderdale just five miles from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Soak up some sunshine on the resort’s 500-foot private beach or by the lagoon-style pool. Located just a mile from Port Everglades, it is the perfect place to spend a couple of nights before boarding a cruise ship. I have stayed there many times and have sent clients there.

Rooms are filled with cushy furnishings, high-speed internet access, and every possible amenity to make you feel at home. Guests can relax on the oceanfront and enjoy the amazing views. There are plenty of activities on offer, including beach basketball, volleyball, shuffleboard courts, ping pong, and a human chess board. The resort’s private stretch of shoreline is popular for its chaise lounges and cabanas, as well as activities available to children.” — Carie Skerritt

9. Canyon Ranch Lenox

Lenox, Massachusetts

Lawn at Canyon Ranch, Lenox
Sandi Barrett

“Canyon Ranch offers guests a personal pathway to health and wellness through exercise, spa treatments, counseling, and mindfulness. When you visit, you get to create a custom pathway with your own personal advisor. I love that I can plan my visit with a consultant weeks before I arrive. This gives me time to reflect and prepare for my chosen path, like weight management, exploring the Berkshires on foot, personal care, and any number of other pathway options.

Your counselor plans your personal wellness program based on your goals — all you need to do is show up. I love leaving time to sit quietly and meditate in the gorgeous surroundings. My favorite experiences at Canyon Ranch revolve around extended spa days with my besties. After three days of pampering, you leave feeling like a princess (or prince).

The healthy, spa cuisine contributes to the overall wellness program. However, there are some excellent desserts included — it’s all about balance. One note: The Lenox Campus is alcohol-free. You may have libations in your room, but not in public places due to their detox program.

Other Canyon Ranch all-inclusive resorts include the original in Tucson, Arizona; Woodside, California; and Las Vegas, Nevada. ” — Sandi Barrett

FAQs

What is the best month to go to all-inclusive resorts?

If cost is the most important factor in choosing your all-inclusive vacation, the best bet will be May, June, September, or October when rooms are often significantly cheaper. Off-site activities usually limited to a certain number of people, also tend to fill up fast during the high season. Starting in August, seasonal airfare on both domestic and international flights drops as well.

Is it worth paying all-inclusive?

Yes, it is. If you have a specific budget for your holiday, or you’d like to know most of the costs upfront, then an all-inclusive is worth booking. It simplifies the planning process but also allows you to clearly understand your total vacation cost in advance. All-inclusive packages bundle everything together so you don’t need to constantly worry about your expenses for meals, activities, and entertainment. Not having to think about budgeting or splitting bills is probably the best part about this kind of laid back vacation.

Do all US resorts charge a resort fee?

No, according to the American Hotel and Lodging Association, only about 6% of hotels charge resort fees. Most hotels in popular tourist destinations like Las Vegas and Hawaii will charge you for items and privileges such as parking, local telephone calls, internet access, or a coffee maker in your room. The trouble is, it can be tough to find out whether or not your hotel charges a resort fee before you book your room.

Are there affordable all-inclusive resorts in the US?

Yes, there are. Standard rates in affordable all-inclusive hotels usually start at around $250 per night for two. This covers meals, snacks, and certain alcoholic beverages at various buffet-style restaurants, a la carte venues, and bars, as well as gratuities and entertainment throughout the day and night. Whether you’re dreaming of a family-friendly beach trip or an adults-only resort, these reasonably priced all-inclusive resorts won’t break the bank.

Can I get married at an all-inclusive resort?

Yes, a number of resorts are now allowing the bride and groom to customize their destination wedding or offer wedding and honeymoon deals. In addition to providing an exquisite setting, a certified officiant, and photographers, experienced event planners will help you with all the details so that you and your guests can enjoy your big day. Also, some resorts allow the bride and groom to customize their wedding ceremony.
