13 Foods and Drinks To Try in Vancouver’s Granville Island Restaurants

13 Foods and Drinks To Try in Vancouver’s Granville Island Restaurants

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

Warm glazed donuts and a hot flat-white coffee for breakfast, smoked salmon and parmesan-and-herb focaccia for lunch, and juicy Okanagan cherries as an afternoon snack — all with the deep-blue waters of False Creek as a backdrop. Regardless of your dining/sightseeing dreams, the delightful scene on Vancouver’s Granville Island is sure to deliver.

With its location right across the inlet from downtown Vancouver, Granville Island has several undeniable advantages. The big bay-and-bridge views come to mind, as does the salty sea air. Indeed, the scenic peninsula in British Columbia’s largest city would be worth a visit for its natural attributes alone.

But when you add in dozens of vendors offering some of the best seafood, desserts, and fresh fruit around, you have the makings of a true treasure. I enjoy exploring public markets wherever I go, and I’m especially fond of the Granville Island Public Market for its cool vibe that attracts both locals and tourists, its nonstop entertainment by local musicians, and its over-the-top selection of tasty foods.

Based on my numerous visits over the years, here are 13 delicious foods (and drinks) to try on Vancouver’s Granville Island.

13 Foods and Drinks To Try in Vancouver’s Granville Island Restaurants

1. Chocolate Glazed Cake Donut — Lee’s Donuts

The line of customers that stretches out the door will be your first hint that Lee’s Donuts is an iconic destination on Granville Island. Then, as you near the counter, the rows of glazed and sugar-dusted circles of goodness will answer any remaining doubts you might have about the place that has been providing handmade donuts since 1979.

Whether you’re a fan of the classic raspberry jam-filled, the decadent Bavarian chocolate with dark chocolate custard, or the glazed vanilla and chocolate cake varieties with colorful sprinkles, the creations at Lee’s Donuts will more than satisfy a morning craving for something sweet and indulgent.

I couldn’t resist the glossy icing on the chocolate glazed donut for my breakfast treat. I highly recommend it — especially with the setting of the Burrard Street bridge in the background.

2. Flat White Coffee — Petit Ami

For some flavorful caffeine to go with your donut, the cute little coffee shop Petit Ami is known for its flat white coffees. Especially when the Vancouver weather turns chilly, the hot drink with double espresso shots and a layer of velvety micro-foam is a sure-fire way to warm up.

The coffee shop uses coffees that are direct from small-lot farmers, and then it roasts the beans locally, ensuring a fresh flavor.

Longliner Seafoods on Granville Island
Cindy Barks

3. Candied Salmon — Longliner Seafoods

Named for the long-liner wooden fishing boat that company founder Jim Moorehead used as a commercial fisherman, Longliner Seafoods is an institution at the Granville Island Public Market. A sign reminds customers that the Longliner Seafoods stand has been in the same spot since the market opened its doors in 1979.

Although you could get virtually any type of seafood at Longliner — from shrimp to halibut to fresh salmon — a visit to Granville Island wouldn’t be complete without a sample of the tasty candied salmon. For me, the sweet/salty/smoky salmon specialty is the signature flavor of Granville Island.

Pro Tip: Along with making a great addition to a Granville Island picnic, the salmon can also be packaged for worldwide distribution.

4. Parmesan + Herb Focaccia — Terra Breads

Hand-shaped loaves scored with the baker’s mark are among the features of Terra Breads, a bakery with multiple locations in Vancouver and the surrounding area. The bustling Granville Island location offers creative bread selections such as fig plus anise and cranberry pistachio, as well as pastries like cinnamon cardamom cruffins and peach rosemary tarts.

The loaves and pastries all looked wonderful, but I found that the individual parmesan plus herb focaccias — light and airy, yet rich with flavor — made the perfect picnic bread.

Clam chowder pot pie from A La Mode
Cindy Barks

5. Clam Chowder Pot Pie — A La Mode

Pies of every conceivable variety are on display at A La Mode, a long-time favorite at the public market. From coconut cream to key lime to traditional apple, sweet-pie lovers are sure to find their favorite — sold by the slice or by the whole pie.

Or for something different, A La Mode also serves an assortment of savory pies and pot pies. Its signature dish for years has been the New England-style clam chowder pot pie, rich with baby Manilla clams, smoked bacon, russet potatoes, and a creamy homemade broth — all topped off with a puff-pastry top crust. The pot pies are heated to order and served with a side salad for a complete box meal.

Halibut fish and chips from Tony's Fish & Oyster Cafe
Cindy Barks

6. Halibut Fish And Chips — Tony’s Fish & Oyster Café

It’s not fancy, but Tony’s Fish & Oyster Café is widely known to serve the best fish and chips in Vancouver. With only six tables, Tony’s is “casual and unpretentious” with a fun atmosphere, according to its website. The little restaurant located at the entrance to Granville Island lives up to its reputation.

When I visited on a busy lunch hour, the service was friendly and quick, and my fish and chips came served in a paper-lined basket, complete with crispy-fried halibut, lightly dressed coleslaw, thick-cut fries, and paper cups of ketchup and tartar sauce. And, as advertised, the fish was flaky and flavorful, and some of the best I tasted on my trip.

Pro Tip: Although I opted for the traditional fish and chips, I had second thoughts on my choice when I noticed several fellow customers dining on Tony’s seafood platter of clams, mussels, prawns, and scallops in garlic butter, served with breaded oysters and deep-fried cod. Definitely something to try on my next visit to Tony’s!

Fresh sweet cherries at the Granville Island Market
Cindy Barks

7. Local Sweet Cherries — Sunlight Farms

From tomatoes to raspberries to blueberries, all of the produce is stellar at the Sunlight Farms stand. But the local sweet cherries are perhaps the stars of the market. Piled high in their paper baskets, the deep red cherries are hard to resist, and I always end up buying a pound or two when I visit Granville Island. They make a great dessert or a quick afternoon snack.

The farm’s website describes itself as a place for “one-stop shopping for all your produce needs,” and Vancouver’s tourism website says the market draws top local producers from Fraser Valley to Okanagan. “No wonder Vancouver chefs are often spotted shopping here for high-quality and rare ingredients for their menus,” the website adds.

Smoked salmon tostada at Alimentaria Mexicana
Cindy Barks

8. Smoked Salmon Tostada — Alimentaria Mexicana

From the cool seaside setting of Granville Island, the beautiful Alimentaria Mexicana restaurant delivers on its promise of an “immersive journey into the heart of Mexico — its cuisine, its culture, and those who sustain it.”

Located on a prominent corner just across from the public market building, Alimentaria Mexicana is sure to catch your eye with its lovely patio screened by flowering plants and colorful mosaic murals. And the cuisine more than lives up to the pretty setting.

Housemade tortillas crafted from heirloom corn sourced from small Mexican farming communities serve as the base for specialties such as carne asada con queso, a trio of cheese-crusted tacos of charbroiled skirt steak, charred onions, and avocado. Or, for a wonderful blend of Canadian and Mexican cuisines, I loved the smoked salmon tostada, a creation that tops a crispy corn tortilla with locally smoked chum salmon, cucumber cream, and pickled red onions.

Granville Island Brewing in Vancouver

9. Westcoast IPA, Granville Island Brewing

If beer and a bite are in order, Vancouver mainstay Granville Island Brewing is the go-to spot. Billed as Canada’s first microbrewery, Granville Island Brewing has been producing local brews since 1984.

Favorites include the Westcoast IPA, a fruity, floral, citrus mix of flavors, and the English Bay Ale, an ale with caramel malt sweetness and low bitterness. For weekend brunch, pair your beer with the breakfast “sammie” of thick-cut bacon, smoked cheddar cheese, and fried egg on a brioche bun. Or try the pub-fare food choices like sea-salted fries or the local favorite poutine, made with fries, chicken gravy, cheese curds, and green onion.

Old fashioned puff cream from Popina Canteen
Cindy Barks

10. Old Fashioned Puff Cream — Popina Canteen

If you still have room for dessert or if you’re just out for a sweet indulgence, the Popina Canteen is definitely the place to treat yourself. Playing off the traditional cream puff dessert, Popina features puff creams — a soft-serve ice cream rolled in a variety of toppings and topped with a soft cream puff shell.

Puff cream flavors range from the Violet B that features freeze-dried blueberries with a cornflake crunch to the Malteser topped with crushed chocolate-covered malted milk balls. For a truly decadent treat, try the Old-Fashioned topped with sea salt toffee sauce and toasted slivered almonds.

Puff creams are not the only treats available at Popina. The canteen reportedly was the vision of a team of celebrated chefs who came together to serve Vancouver four things they craved most: the perfect lobster roll, the best fried chicken, amazing falafel, and the city’s best burger.

11. Coconut Curries – Chau Veggie Express

With a menu that includes wholesome noodle bowls and tasty tofu dishes, Chau Veggie Express proves that a plant-based diet can be both satisfying and delicious. The Vietnamese version of coconut curry begins with a base curry paste of fresh ingredients and coconut milk, which gives the dish a creamier and milder flavor compared to Indian curries.

From fresh rolls with options and coconut-based soups to papaya salad and fermented bean curds, Chau Veggie Express continues to stand out among Vancouver restaurants for its innovative approach to Asian vegetarian cuisine.

12. Tasty Soups – The Stock Market

A staple in the Granville Island Market since 1986, The Stock Market is an alternative soup destination with a mini to-go market that specializes in soups, gourmet butter, sauces, chutneys, soups, and stocks while supporting sustainable agriculture and organic living.

Pro Tip: Some of their best-selling soups include the classic Chicken Noodle Soup, Butter Chicken Soup, Yam and Bean Chili, and Creamy Clam Chowder.

13. Sake Wine – Artisan Sake Maker

Granville Island is home to Canada’s first premium sake winery, Artisan Sake Maker. You’ll be surprised by the variations of sake they offer here. Producing wines in small lots, Artisan Sake Maker’s wines complement the seasonal flavors of local West Coast foods.

Pro Tips

  • Granville Island is a vibrant destination offering diverse attractions. Explore the Public Market for local foods and artisanal goods. Visit galleries showcasing Canadian art, or catch a performance at the renowned Granville Island Theatre. Stroll along the waterfront, enjoy street performers, and admire the views of downtown Vancouver.
  • More of a peninsula than an island, Granville Island can be reached on foot in the south, or by ferry from downtown Vancouver.
  • Although there are plenty of scenic outdoor dining spots at the Public Market, another fun option is to walk a half-hour or so to Kitsilano Beach and have a true seaside picnic.

Can You Live In National Parks? | Ways To Work Or Retire In a National Park For Free

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

Who wouldn’t want to retire to a national park? What others call the vacation of a lifetime, you call home.

Yes, you can live in a National Park. Even better — there are free places to live in national parks. And the icing on the cake? You can live in national parks and earn money while doing so.

Of course, an opportunity like this comes with a catch: You’re going to need to do something to earn the privilege. But whether the work you put in is volunteering a few hours a week or working full time, it just might be the most rewarding experience you’ve ever had

I’m a retired park ranger, I’ve lived and worked in national parks across the country, and have hired and worked with a bunch of great retirees who have made a national park their home — at least while they were working or volunteering in the park.

Let me give you three options for finding your retirement park. The same options will work for other vacation destinations on public lands, from national forests to state parks, so you’ve got a huge selection from which to choose. Let’s take a look.

Can You Live In National Parks? – Ways To Work Or Retire In a National Park

Option 1: Volunteer

National parks rely on volunteers for many important functions from staffing visitor center desks to acting as campground hosts, giving interpretive walks to performing maintenance and engineering tasks. Some national parks even host artists in residence. If you’ve got a skill, it’s got a home someplace in the National Park System.

One of the most popular volunteer positions in parks and forests is that of the campground host. Rangers covet good campground hosts. Hosts help visitors check in to their campsites, answer questions about the campground and the park, resolve minor problems and maintenance issues, and refer bigger issues to the ranger or maintenance staff.

Incidentally, while it’s by no means a job requirement, there’s a longstanding tradition of campground hosts occasionally baking cookies for the young seasonal campground rangers, away from home and college for the summer. I’d be remiss without mentioning this.

Campground hosts get a pad to park their RV, usually right up front in the campground. There’s usually water and electricity customarily provided gratis. Always ask about the logistics of your setup before accepting an offer.

Having your own RV for housing may also help you out with landing other volunteer positions, beyond that of campground host. Park housing is always tight during the summer, so if you bring your own, that may help out. It just depends on the park’s ability to accommodate it. A former NPS campground host who worked for me found an ideal volunteer position with the Forest Service that provided a quiet, fairly remote campsite for volunteering a few days a week in a small visitor center.

Some parks are able to provide housing for volunteers, but housing options will vary. If you’re volunteering as a couple, your options will be a bit more limited. However it’s extremely common for retired couples to volunteer together (a park can essentially get two volunteers for the price of one), so don’t be discouraged. Also, your willingness to volunteer at other times of the year outside of peak season may help you find a volunteer position with housing.

How long will you need to volunteer? It depends. Some parks choose to give more people a chance to volunteer, so they’ll rotate volunteers out after a few weeks. Other positions may want you to volunteer for the entire season, maybe longer. It varies from position to position and from park to park.

And the good news is that because you’re a volunteer, there’s a variety of work schedules available — from five days a week to two days on/four days off and everything in between, depending on the position.

It’s also possible that you may receive a small stipend to cover some expenses, but if you’re looking for income, and a better selection of housing, the next options are for you.

Option 2: Work For The National Park Service

Yes, you too can be a ranger. While not too many years ago parks would get many times more applicants than they had positions available, not so today.

Of course work requires more of a commitment than volunteering. You’ll have to apply months in advance, meet the requirements, show up on time, work more hours than a volunteer, and keep your commitment to work for as long as you agreed. But paid employees get priority over volunteers for housing. That said, because you’re getting paid, you’ll also be expected to pay for housing — and housing isn’t cheap due to laws that require the government to charge rates commensurate with the vacation communities that surround the parks. However, employee housing comes with a built-in community of friends, making your park job that much more rewarding.

What types of positions are available for retirees? Summer seasonal work can involve collecting fees at an entrance station, running campgrounds, maintaining facilities or equipment, working at a visitor center, or even giving interpretive walks and talks (if you have the proper education).

Permanent, year-round jobs are more challenging to obtain, and the process of getting one is a topic unto itself. Before you jump to that level, consider some time volunteering or working seasonally to get a sense of what an NPS career is about.

These are government jobs, so expect more red tape and more requirements than working in the private sector. And speaking of the private sector…

Option 3: Work For The Private Sector In A Park

If you want to increase your odds of finding a summer job with housing in a park, consider looking at the private businesses that operate in parks with permission from the NPS — also known as park concessionaires.

Concessionaires can offer situations perfect for couples. A restaurant and gift shop concession in a park I used to work in had a wonderful couple that managed the facility and lived on site. They essentially had their own mountaintop chalet to themselves every evening all summer long. I just saw a concessionaire online seeking a family to manage a remote fishing operation — fly fishing expertise required, cabin provided.

Even in the best years, concessionaires in national parks have challenges in finding good employees. I’ve been in parks where they’ve had to fly students in from Europe to fill their positions. So if you’re a responsible adult with a good work history, you’re a hot commodity. Don’t expect to grow rich, but do expect to be appreciated and offered some enticement to stay on the job.

The quality of housing available will depend on the park, position, and location. If you’re looking at the parks with hundreds of concession employees, you’re not going to want to live in the dormitories that the majority of their employees share. It’s less than the relaxing experience you’re looking for. You’re going to have to find an exceptional position in a more remote location. But with so many options, there’s going to be something that fits you to a tee.

Finding A Volunteer Position

For volunteer positions with the federal government, check out volunteer.gov, a one-stop shopping venue for volunteering for multiple agencies, including the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, and more.

You can search available positions by location, type of job, housing and amenities, and other factors.

If you have a specific park in mind, I recommend calling or visiting the park to find out more information. Many parks have a volunteer coordinator who will connect interested parties with the right opportunity. If you’re talking to a volunteer coordinator, ask about other volunteering opportunities in the area. You may find a volunteer position with the Forest Service is right up your alley. It’s good to shop around.

Some parks will start posting their recruiting announcements on volunteer.gov six months or more in advance. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of positions available on shorter notice, it’s just that the better ones get filled early. If you have a specific park in which you’d like to work, contact the park’s volunteer coordinator for an idea of when you’ll need to apply.

Finding A Ranger Position

Finding a paid position with the National Park Service is going to be more time-consuming. The online application process is cumbersome, and the screening is more rigorous.

The website for jobs with the federal government is USAjobs.gov. The application deadline can be six months in advance — summer hiring can go on in December and January — so if you have a specific park in mind, it’s best to find out when they do their seasonal hiring and be on the lookout.

Getting A Job With A Concessionaire

Getting a private-sector job with housing in a national park is relatively easy. The application procedures are simpler, and there are fewer deadlines to deal with.

The thing that is a bit more complex is that there’s no one-stop website for concessionaire jobs. You’re going to have to find who operates the concession in the park you want and apply with them. Not hard, but a bit of online searching.

The closest thing to one-stop shopping for a concession job in the parks is xanterrajobs.com. Xanterra operates concession facilities in seven large national parks. But as I mentioned before, the parks with large numbers of employees may house them in dormitories. Consider looking for smaller, more isolated parks. Some may even be able to accommodate you if you have an RV.

One deciding factor in your choice of park jobs may be your pet if you have one. A majority of NPS and concession housing for seasonal employees and volunteers won’t allow you to bring a pet with you. If you’re in your own RV, a pet may not be an issue, but check in advance before you get too far along in the planning process.

Getting a Job Through the Student Conservation Association (SCA)

The Student Conservation Association, or the CSA, is the biggest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and young adults. Founded in 1957, the Student Conservation Association is dedicated to building the next generation of conservation leaders.

After working with the Student Conservation Association, their members emerge with increased environmental awareness, social responsibility, and leadership skills.

The Toyota Music Factory (TMF) is a huge part of the food and entertainment scene in Las Colinas area. If you plan to stay long, you may want to bring a blanket or two in case the benches and tables are already occupied. No matter your mood or the occasion, and whether you’re there for an early breakfast, leisurely brunch, business lunch, or romantic sunset dinner, you’ll find a favorite restaurant in the stunning Las Colinas area of Irving, TX.

Here are 15 of the best options, in no particular order.

I was hosted by Visit Irving Texas and Texican Court and was lucky to have enjoyed most of these restaurants while I was in town. All opinions are my very own.

15 Fabulous Las Colinas Restaurants

1. Two Mules Cantina

Two Mules Cantina, an urban-style restaurant with a bohemian vibe located inside the Texican Court boutique hotel, is by far one of the coolest places in Las Colinas to dine. It offers authentic food, wine, and spirits, but the best part is that you can enjoy your meal in a relaxed atmosphere inside or in an outdoor beer garden featuring beanbag-style chairs and fire pits. If you choose to stay for a while, Texican Court’s unconventional hotel rooms are a sight to see. Picture this: pink hotel-room doors, old-style orange refrigerators in the rooms, unique robes, and nice, comfy blankets on the beds.

2. Pacific Table

If dining with a view is your priority when choosing a place to eat in Las Colinas, you need to go to Pacific Table and ask for waterfront seating. You’ll enjoy a mix of scrumptious modern Pacific Northwest cuisine and appetizers with a delectable presentation. Pacific Table is a top-rated destination for travelers and locals to celebrate milestones and occasions, and it’s got a great view to boot.

Pro Tip: Must-tries include their fresh oysters and miso salmon. Don’t leave without a taste of their lemon icebox pie.

The Lakehouse Lounge at the Omni Hotel, Las Colinas.

3. The Lakehouse Waterfront Lounge

Bask in the sun while enjoying food poolside at The Lakehouse Waterfront Lounge, the outdoor restaurant at the Omni Las Colinas Hotel. Guests of the hotel have full access to it all, but here’s the good part: Those who aren’t guests can purchase a day pass to enjoy the pool, lounge, and cabana. And as a bonus, you’ll have gorgeous views of the canal.

4. Grimaldi’s Pizzeria

Located at the Toyota Music Factory, Grimaldi’s is a family-style restaurant chain where you can enjoy New York-style coal-fired brick-oven pizza. Choose indoor seating or an outdoor seating area covered with a tarp. After enjoying your pizza, step on over to Pop Factory (see below) for a frozen treat prepared just the way you like it.

5. Pop Factory

For a well-deserved treat after dinner, don’t walk, but run to Pop Factory, where every popsicle is dipped into amazing finger-licking goodness — if that’s the way you like it. You’ll get Insta-worthy popsicle photos for sure! Fair warning: There were so many flavors to choose from that I had a hard time choosing. I ended up going with a chocolate bar dipped in coconut and almonds, and my friend got hers with a chocolate coating dipped in sprinkles!

6. The Ginger Man

If bringing your dog along on trips is important to you, then you’ll want to head to The Ginger Man, which welcomes dogs to dine on their waterside patio with a full corner view of the canal. This restaurant is Las Colinas’s newest pub and offers bar bites, a full dinner menu, and beer from around the world.

Pro Tip: A must-try is their famous Bacon Jam Burger.

The Ranch restaurant, Las Colinas, Irving.
Kim Croisant

7. The Ranch At Las Colinas

People come from all over to dine at The Ranch at Las Colinas, with its food that blends several cuisines from around the world and its rustic, beautifully thought out, and spacious patio. The Ranch has become one of the best restaurants to go for steaks, burgers, and drinks. There’s live music on the patio, and they even welcome your pet to dine outside.

Not only do they use farm-raised Texas beef and fresh local foods, but the desserts are out of this world. We ordered their bread pudding, and though I was full, I ate it all. So if an upscale rustic ranch vibe is your thing, I’m sure you’ll want to come back! I do love a good farm-to-fork concept.

Pro Tip: Can’t decide which appetizer to order? Order the Chef’s Favorite 4 to sample the best. The presentation alone is worth it.

8. Hugo’s Invitados

Hugo’s Invitados is an upscale restaurant featuring organic and authentic modern Mexican fare such as free-range chicken enchiladas. What’s not to love about that? Hugo’s is by far my pick for a fun atmosphere, with music coming from their iconic green van parked outside. The patio seating is wonderful, but make sure to go inside and see all the mannequins dressed in beautiful floral outfits.

Hugo’s is a trendy, happening place. The wait time may be longer than you think, so plan accordingly. It’s the place to be in Las Colinas. If you only have a night in town and are looking for a fun time, this is the place I recommend.

Pro Tip: Must-tries include the organic margaritas and smoked old-fashioned. Make sure they set the flame to it so you can watch it smoke — that’s the best part.

Turkish coffee and avocado toast, Pax & Beneficia Coffee.

9. Pax & Beneficia Coffee

Pax & Beneficia began in Las Colinas as the lifelong dream of two friends and now has two other locations in the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. Pax is a small but mighty coffee shop serving specialty coffees from various countries. It’s a great place to gather for an intimate talk with your friends or business partner. When we were there, every bit of their space, inside and out, was occupied with people working, and conversations about life were going on.

Pro Tip: Try the Turkish coffee and avocado toast for a great way to start off your morning.

10. Edoko Omakase

We must have spent hours here sampling some of the finest sushi, all prepared by the chef himself. At Edoko Omakase, customers are friends, and sake is a daily drink. The restaurant is known for its Edo Tacos, a must-try for either your appetizer or your second course.

Pro Tip: Ask for the chef’s choice courses, and the chef will set you up with the best of the best sushi. The fresh wasabi is straight from the root, with nothing added to it.

Reservoir at the Toyota Music Factory, Irving, Texas.
Kim Croisant

11. Reservoir

Reservoir, located on the Toyota Music Factory lawn, offers American fare and an unbeatable, happening atmosphere. Come to party — or at least be open to having a good time! Their covered open-air patio is right in the midst of all the TMF has to offer and puts you front and center in the Texas Lottery Plaza.

Pro Tip: If you’re looking to score on Instagram, then you need to order the Everything But the Kitchen Sink, the dish that’s served in a sink!

12. Pacheco Taco Bar

Pacheco Taco Bar is a casual Mexico City-inspired taquería inside the Toyota Music Factory. You can’t go wrong ordering any of their street tacos, since that’s what they are known for, but the 4 Street Tacos is the best value. After enjoying your tacos, sit on the lawn of the TMF and relax.

13. Via Reál

One of the first restaurants to open its doors in Las Colinas was Via Reál. This spot is still known nationwide for its relaxed Santa Fe style and delicious Mexican and Southwestern cuisine.

Pro Tip: For an excellent time in Las Colinas and perhaps a romantic one, book a dinner cruise by Gondola Adventures on the Mandalay Canal. It can even include songs sung by the gondolier!

14. LRH Restaurant & Bar

Located at the Omni Las Colinas Hotel against the backdrop of beautiful Lake Carolyn, the LRH Restaurant & Bar name implies its local roots. LRH stands for “Little Ranch of the Hills” or ‘‘El Ranchito de Las Colinas”, a family ranch that was the start of today’s Las Colinas.

Whether you’re looking for a hearty lunch before exploring Lake Carolyn, a cool drink after a long day, or a fun spot to eat with friends, LRH Restaurant & Bar has everything you need, from regional cuisine and popular dishes to gourmet coffee and fresh breakfast pastry. Guests can also enjoy craft cocktails and local brews in their brand-new bar.

15. Cork & Pig Tavern

You’ll feel at home the minute you step into this low-key but lively Las Colinas outpost of the Cork & Pig mini-chain, where Texas-inspired dishes served with soul and new American cuisine range from crispy calamari to blackened rib-eye.

With an extensive choice of wines, craft beers, and refreshing cocktails, Cork & Pig Tavern is an exciting environment for friends and family to unwind and dine.
Pro Tip: The black truffle pizza with calamari and a glass of pinot noir is a great Happy Hour option.

7 Amazing Things To Do In Versailles After You’ve Seen The Palace

Note: The Travel Awaits team regularly updates content to provide the latest, and most accurate information to our readers. The updated content in this article may not reflect the views or opinions of the original author.

At the top of the must-see list of Paris attractions is the Palace of Versailles. Just 30 minutes from Paris, the royal Palace of Versailles is the ultimate in French decadence from a past era with 700 rooms, over 2,000 acres of magnificent gardens and parkland, the Petite Trianon, the mini-palace getaway created for Marie Antoinette, and the private apartments for the king and queen.

Louis XIV, the “Sun King,” is synonymous with the opulent Château de Versailles. He transformed the modest hunting lodge into a lavish palace, central to his absolute monarchy. Château de Versailles symbolized his power, hosting elaborate court life and grandiose ceremonies. Its Hall of Mirrors witnessed historic treaties, cementing the legacy of Louis XIV as France’s quintessential monarch.

Depending on how much time you have, the palace and gardens can be seen in a few hours or over an entire day. However, there’s an undiscovered treasure which most people don’t visit: the lovely city of Versailles, which has so much to see and do, you can easily spend another day or two and still not do it all.

7 Fun Things To Do In Versailles After You’ve Seen The Palace

1. Walk Through The Gallery Of Coaches

A perfect accompaniment to the Palace of Versailles is the Gallery of Coaches. Located across the street from the Versailles Palace in the former royal stables, the museum displays a collection of regal and royal antique coaches dating back to the 1600s. The collection contains elaborately adorned grand ceremonial Berlin Coaches used for special occasions including the marriage of Napoleon I, the baptism of the Duke of Bordeaux, the coronation of Charles X, and the funeral of King Louis XVIII. The decadent and highly ornamental vehicles were made by hand by the best sculptors, embroiderers, cabinetmakers, and metal workers of the time. A range of mini-carriages that were used to transport Marie Antoinette’s children, plus sedan chairs and sleds, are also on display. You can download a children’s game booklet about the carriage collection before you visit.

2. Visit A Former Mansion, Now A Museum

A Versailles mansion constructed in 1751 under the reign of Louis XV has been repurposed and is now the Lambinet Museum. The original owner, when it was first built, was businessman Joseph Porchon. In 1852, the property was sold to Victor Lambinet, a judge on the Versailles court.

After Lambinet passed, his daughter-in-law bestowed the mansion to the city of Versailles in 1929. Among the 35 rooms on three levels, several still maintain the original decor and furniture. The museum displays an extensive collection of artifacts from the French Revolution along with objects and decorative items such as china, clocks, miniatures, and paintings. The fine arts department of the museum rotates a collection of 16th- to 20th-century paintings and sculptures.

Marche Notre Dame food market in Versailles, France

3. Shop At The Food Market

If you can only do one activity on this list, it must be the visit to the food market. The second-largest food market in France, Marche Notre Dame will impress even the most sophisticated foodies. The sprawling culinary wonderland was built under the reign of Louis XXIII in the early 1600s, and today it’s a feast for the eyes and the palate, with the best foods France and Europe have to offer.

Four identical buildings incorporate the indoor market, which hosts vendors such as butchers, fishmongers, and prepared food sellers. Outside, it’s an incredible potpourri of stands boasting seasonal fruits and vegetables, foie gras and pates, pastries, organic eggs, French cheeses, Middle Eastern delicacies, spices, and local wines. There are also a number of takeout food stands and food trucks that sell crepes, sandwiches, sausages, paella, and burgers, all prepared on the spot. If the sight of this abundance of food makes you hungry, there are many ethnic restaurants and cafes alongside the market where you can enjoy a more formal lunch or dinner.

An ideal activity is to buy food at the market and have a picnic at one of the many bucolic parks and gardens in Versailles.

4. Enjoy An Opera At Versailles Royal Opera House

Did you know that the Palace of Versailles has a magnificent, jewel box-size opera house? King Louis XIV commissioned the construction of his own private opera house in 1682, conceived by architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart. However, there were numerous delays in the completion of the opera house, and another architect, Ange-Jacques Gabriel, who was inspired by the great opera houses Vicenza, Bologna, and Turin in Italy, was brought in. The opera house was inaugurated in 1770 for the marriage of the Dauphin (soon to be King Louis XVI) and his bride, the Archduchess Marie Antoinette. The opera house was refurbished between 2007 and 2009 to accommodate modern technology while retaining its original splendor. Currently, the opera house schedules a slate of operas, musicals, and ballets.

Le Potager Du Roi in Versailles, France, also called the King's Kitchen Garden

5. Stroll The King’s Garden (Le Potager Du Roi)

In 1678, King Louis XIV commissioned Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinie to design a fruit orchard and vegetable and herb garden on top of a swamp. Even in these unfavorable conditions, the garden thrived, and Quintinie engineered the grounds to be able to grow things even out of season, such as asparagus in January and strawberries in March. The 22-acre garden took five years to develop and was declared a historical monument in 1925. Beautifully restored, Le Potager du Roi was reopened in 1991 and is now a UNESCO Heritage site.

You can purchase seasonal fruits and vegetables from the garden at the gift shop.

6. Visit the Versailles Cathedral

Located at 4 Place Saint Louis, Versailles Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Versailles and one of the best Versailles attractions. This French national monument was built in the mid-18th century by Jacques Hardouin-Mansart de Sagonne, the grandson of the famous architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart, who amongst much else, designed the Petit Trianon.

Saint-Louis Cathedral boasts gorgeous Baroque architecture and is even more sumptuous on the inside, even though the cathedral was badly damaged during the French Revolution. It was restored soon afterward and still stands proudly with its distinctive domed roof.

7. Queen’s Hamlet (Hameau de la Reine)

The Queen’s Hamlet is a charming rustic farm that served as Queen Marie Antoinette’s private retreat estate. Part of the Château de Versailles and located northeast of the main Palace of Versailles, the Queen’s Hamlet is usually overlooked by tourists.

You can buy a separate ticket to visit the Queen’s Hamlet which also includes the visit of the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon.
Pro Tip: Purchase the Versailles combo ticket, or the Versailles Passport, to explore every corner of Versailles and save money.

Best Restaurants In Versailles

For a compact city, Versailles can pride itself on a selection of excellent and diverse restaurants for all budgets.

World-famous French chef Alain Ducasse has made his indelible culinary mark on the Palace of Versailles. During the day, Ore, located inside the Palace of Versailles, is a casual cafe that conveniently accommodates visitors to have a time-efficient lunch or snack. At teatime, Ore offers a decadent Marie Antoinette dessert menu including house-made ice creams and sorbets, souffles, eclairs, and French macarons. In the evening, Ore transforms into a signature Ducasse restaurant, organizing themed dinners fit for a king or queen. Themes include a hunting dinner, the king’s birth, a combination dinner and opera, and a New Year’s Eve courtesan ball.

La Table du 11, discreetly tucked away in a Versailles courtyard, is a one Michelin star restaurant just a short walk from the palace. Chef Jean-Baptiste Lavergne-Morazzani conjures up contemporary French cooking with inventive dishes and modern presentation. The dinner menu features a five- or seven-course tasting menu.

Chef Gabriel Gras helms the kitchen at Le Bistrot du 11, the casual offshoot bistro of La Table du 11. At lunchtime, they offer a reasonably priced, two-course menu.

In the same courtyard as La Table du 11 is Salon du Cour, an adorable cafe and tea salon that serves home-baked desserts and a light food menu.

A bistro, an art studio giving painting and drawing lessons, an art gallery, and a home goods shop all exist under one roof at the delightful Esprit d’ Atelier. At lunchtime, the bistro serves homey dishes including spinach and feta quiche and rhubarb and apple crumble.

Best Shops In Versailles

A husband-and-wife team has two unique boutiques across from one another in a secluded courtyard.

Atelier Saveurs is a deluxe tabletop and gourmet shop selling mostly French-made products, including olive oil, chocolate, liqueurs, jellies and jams, locally made soap, cosmetic and skincare products, and a jasmine-scented macaron, created exclusively for the boutique.

Inedite Toile de Jouy presents a collection of products using the classic toile de Jouy print, which adorns tote bags, lampshades, pillowcases, slippers, teacups, and clothing.

Best Places To Stay In Versailles

If you want to stay in the lap of luxury near the palace, book your stay at the Trianon Palace Versailles, a four-star Waldorf Astoria Hotel. It features luxurious rooms and suites, beautifully manicured gardens, a Guerlain spa, and heated indoor swimming pool. Superstar chef Gordon Ramsay has his name stamped on two restaurants at the hotel: Gordon Ramsay au Trianon, a Michelin-star, fine dining restaurant open only for dinner, and the more informal La Veranda, which has a more casual and varied menu and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Le Louis Versailles Chateau Hotel-MGallery, a chic, boutique hotel, is part of the M Gallery brand, a selection of upscale hotels from the Sofitel chain. The four-star hotel is centrally located near the train station and the Palace of Versailles. Inside the hotel, a bar with an extensive wine and cocktail list and a gourmet restaurant that serves lunch and dinner are open seven days a week.

Just a short ride from Versailles is a romantic getaway inspired by painter Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Les Etangs de Corot has 43 rooms, each individually designed, and a special suite was recently decorated in a 1960s style by fashion designers Paul and Joe. Chef Remi Chambard earned a Michelin star for the creative cuisine he serves at the Le Corot bistro. The Caudalie Spa offers exclusive treatments such as a Crushed Cabernet Scrub, a Honey and Wine Wrap, and the Winemaker Massage.

Pro Tips

There are many ways to get to Versailles from Paris. It’s approximately 40 minutes from various train stations in central Paris, and there are two stations in Versailles: Versailles Rive Droite and Versailles Rive Gauche, which is closest to the palace. Round trip fares are about 8 euros. An Uber or taxi will cost approximately 40 to 50 euros each way.

Versailles is a walking town, but make sure you wear comfortable shoes with rubber soles as the distances between some of the attractions can make for long walks. Also, read up on how to visit the Palace of Versailles.

Best All-Inclusive Caribbean Resorts for Couples Guide

Adults-Only Policy

When researching the best all-inclusive Caribbean resort for couples, keep top priorities in mind. If an adults-only environment is important, seek resorts that classify themselves as “adults-only” or “couples-only” destinations. This will ensure a romantic – and kid-free – getaway tailored to the preferences of couples.

Location

The Caribbean islands each hold their individual charm, unique cultures, and attractions. Consider the location that best fits your needs before seeking out a specific resort. We’ve included many popular Caribbean destinations in this list including Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Dominican Republic, Barbados, Bahamas, Virgin Islands, and Costa Rica.

Inclusions

Only all-inclusive resort packages vary, depending on the resort. Check beforehand whether this includes meals, drinks, entertainment, activities, and spa treatments to determine the best all-inclusive resorts.

By knowing exactly what is covered in the all-inclusive package, you’ll be able to budget and avoid unexpected expenses. Choose a package that aligns with your interests and budget.

Romantic Extras

Many couples’ resorts provide an array of romantic amenities. Whether you’re seeking a couples’ massage, a sunset cruise, or a private dinner on the beach, check beforehand to be sure the resort offers your preferred activities.

Are there private beachfront, private pools for a romantic dip before dinner, or intimate dining options? If looking for a honeymoon escape, look into resorts that offer a free honeymoon package. Check in advance for special packages or services that may add to the romantic elements of the resort.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What makes a resort “all-inclusive” for couples in the Caribbean?

A listing as “all-inclusive” generally means that the cost of the stay includes a range of services and amenities, whether those include dining, drinks, excursions, or other activities like spa services.

The rate at an all-inclusive couples’ resort will include accommodations, meal packages, beverages, and sometimes excursions. Check beforehand on various packages. Some may include different levels of alcoholic beverage options such as wine or beer with meals, or top-shelf options.

The reasoning behind an all-inclusive resort is to provide a complete package for couples to relax and enjoy the destination without worrying about individual expenses.

How do I choose between different Caribbean islands for a couples’ resort?

First, get clear on your needs and desires for the destination. By considering the type of experience you want, whether a relaxing beachfront experience, adventurous activities, culture, or a bit of everything, you’ll be able to make the best choice.

Since each island has its own vibe and appeal, consider whether you prefer lively and active nightlife, or prefer something more laid back and secluded. Choose an island that fits your activity needs, atmosphere, budget, and cultural appeal.

How far in advance should I book an all-inclusive Caribbean resort for couples?

The amount of time will depend on the island’s peak season, the popularity of the destination, and any holidays or special events. To get the best pricing, book well in advance – usually 6 to 12 months – for peak season.

If you can be flexible and travel during off-peak season, you may only need to book 3 to 6 months in advance. Keep in mind that some resorts offer discounts during off-peak season.

No matter when you book your reservation, be sure to note the cancellation policy in the event your plans change.

Are there any special romantic packages or services offered by these resorts?

Yes, many Caribbean resorts for couples offer special romantic packages. They’ll sometimes include personalized amenities designed especially for couples seeking a romantic getaway.

Whether it’s a romantic dinner, photography services, spa packages, room decorations, sunset cruises, honeymoon packages, and more, these packages are designed to enhance the amour and create a trip with lasting memories. Check with your resort for the romantic packages offered.

Conclusion

When looking for the best all-inclusive experience, consider what is most important to you as a couple.

Best Resorts in Jamaica for Couples Guide

When choosing a beach resort in Jamaica for couples, consider the following four factors to ensure a memorable and romantic getaway:

Ambiance and Privacy

Look for resorts that offer a serene and intimate setting for a romantic escape. Some resorts offer unique accommodations like treehouse suites or cliffside cottages, providing an exclusive experience away from the crowds.

That could be something as simple as a private balcony or it could be something more elite like a private island where you and your honey can hide away from the world. The Caves in Negril, for instance, is known for its private cliffside cottages and artsy, Bohemian vibe, offering breathtaking views and a secluded atmosphere for couples.

Exclusive Adult-Only Options

Adult-only resorts or sections within resorts ensure a more peaceful and romantic environment, free from the bustle of family activities. Plus, while there’s nothing wrong with holidayers who want to take the kids, you don’t need little ones racing around and interrupting your romantic getaway.

Resorts like Sandals South Coast and Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall cater exclusively to adults, offering overwater bungalows, swim-up suites, and butler services, creating a perfect setting for couples looking for a quiet and luxurious stay.

Personalized Services and Amenities

High-quality service can significantly enhance your romantic getaway. Look for resorts that offer personalized butler services, private dining options, and exclusive spa treatments.

For example, Sandals Royal Plantation in Ocho Rios provides all-suite accommodations with standard butler service, promising a luxurious and pampered stay.

Activities and Experiences

While relaxation is key, having access to a variety of activities can enrich your stay. Whether it’s water sports, spa treatments, fine dining, a top-tier fitness center, or exclusive tours, the right resort will offer a mix of leisure and adventure.

And of course, you want something with a laid-back island vibe. Spots, where you can sit down under an umbrella and sip on drinks from a beachfront bar, will also give you the relaxation you want when you’re on a luxury getaway with your special someone.
