Summer is approaching, and many Americans are planning to stay stateside for vacation this year.
Videos by TravelAwaits
Some are heading to FIFA World Cup cities to join the ‘football’ fun, while others will be road tripping around the country to ring in our big 250th Independence Day. With the major events overlapping, there’s sure to be unexpected fun in major host cities nationwide, from Seattle to Miami to Kansas City.
On the flip side, other Americans are staying close to home for their summer vacations because of mounting global uncertainties and skyrocketing travel costs, from airfares to hotel rates. Recently, the Department of State issued a worldwide caution security alert for Americans.
In short, it’s not a bad year to stay home and save money for your next big international adventure. If that’s the case, you can still save while traveling this year by targeting affordable summer destinations around the US. Here are some of my favorites.
8 affordable summer destinations around the US
Wildwood, New Jersey

This Jersey Shore standout has a classic boardwalk, expansive beach, and those small-town landmarks that complete any summer vacation. From its historical society to its beloved 18-hole putt-putt course to its roller coasters, there’s a fantastic balance of fun and traditional New England fare. If you like classic diners and motels, too, you’ll enjoy an affordable getaway in Wildwood.
I recommend Seaport Suites and The Shore House. Both offer great amenities for families at reasonable prices.
Virginia Beach, Virginia

Like Wildwood, Virginia Beach has a reputation for perfectly affordable summer getaways. Once again, there’s a boardwalk perfect for strolls or nights out, along with lazy white-sand beaches. Don’t forget about seafood and history. In addition to its famous crabcakes, Virginia Beach is also the home of First Landing State Park—where some of the first European explorers touched down on North America.
I recommend checking out The Founders Inn & Spa Tapestry Collection by Hilton, if you like boutique stays with a B&B feel. Otherwise, you can find affordable Airbnbs on the beach.
Branson, Missouri

Who says the Midwest doesn’t have a classic vacation spot? Similar to land-locked hubs like Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and the Wisconsin Dells, Branson has a balance of family-friendly activities. There are roller coasters, lakes for boating adventures, dinner shows galore, and plenty more.
I recommend Palace View Resort by Spinnaker if you don’t mind trading savings for location. Or, if you want a more upscale stay, go with Still Waters Resort. You can also find a family-friendly rental easily.
South Padre Island, Texas

South Padre Island is one of the most exciting destinations on the Gulf Coast. While it’s only 34 miles long, South Padre is home to gorgeous beaches, nature tourism, and a lively nightlife scene. If you like a little action (whether at bars or jet-skiing) with your standard beach vacation, don’t write off South Padre.
I recommend checking out La Copa Inn Beach Hotel or, if you want even more savings, go with The Flamingo.
Glenwood Springs, Colorado

It’s hard to find affordable summer destinations in Colorado—the state’s tourism sector is pricey across the board. That being said, Glenwood Springs is a smaller town where you can find budget accommodations while you enjoy some of the state’s top sites. There’s a massive hot spring facility, along with Rocky Mountain hiking trails and lakes.
I recommend the Best Western Antlers at Glenwood Springs. If you want to keep things simple, you can also book a stay at Glenwood Springs Cedar Lodge—it’s got all the resort features you want in an affordable package.
Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Eureka Springs is a spa town nestled in the Ozarks. It’s sure to delight anyone who appreciates woodlands, Victorian architecture, and cozy hot springs. Its former status as a wellness hub and quaint architecture make it ideal for anyone who appreciates the slow life, history, and spa treatments.
If you want to splurge in Eureka Springs, stay at the 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa. If not, I recommend checking out the New Orleans Hotel Eureka Springs, located right in the heart of downtown.
Marathon, Florida

If you enjoy the Florida Keys, you’re probably aware of Marathon. It’s one of the smaller outposts on the islands, known for its family-friendly offers, natural splendor, and seafood festivals. Anglers and fans of history will also find there’s plenty to keep them busy.
I recommend checking out affordable VRBOs and Airbnbs in Marathon and in the nearby Keys. You can also book a stay at Banana Bay Resort & Marina.
