The ticketing platform makes it easy to plan your trip across Japan by train, whether you want an unlimited rail pass or a one-way fare. The company’s goal is to help you budget for transportation from Tokyo, Kyoto, and beyond—without overspending.
After all, the art of staying within budget is something more Americans are focused on than ever before. According to a recent JRPass study, a week-long trip in the United States now costs around $4,550 for two people.
In some states, daily travel costs have risen to more than $450, counting factors like room rates, local transportation, meal prices, and more. (And that’s not even counting flights.) Here’s what we know about how far $500 gets you in each state. Plan accordingly.
Inside the new study from JRPass—which states are best for budget trips?
As mentioned above, the JRPass study takes into account seven factors, which are then weighted for a final result. The final list takes into account how many nights you can stay at a hotel for less than $500, average hotel price per night, average daily food cost, average daily transportation cost, entry for popular paid attractions, and the average cost of an inexpensive meal.
These 10 states will let you go further on a trip with $500 in your back pocket:
- South Dakota
- North Dakota
- Arkansas:
- Mississippi
- Oklahoma
- New Mexico
- Michigan
- Alabama
- Nebraska

Don’t expect $500 to get you far in these five pricey states:
