Route 1, aka the PCH, aka the Pacific Coast Highway, has reopened after temporarily closing portions in Big Sur. Road trippers and locals alike can now cruise up and down the coast on the hunt for some R&R.

Though Route 1, the traditional Pacific Coast Highway, ends in Mendocino, it continues up toward Canada as Route 101.
Along the way, you’ll find more than a few sleepy towns and coastal cities with lovely hotels throughout California. There are modern takes on the motel, bougie resorts with infinity pools overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and cozy lodges hidden in old-growth forests.
But what about Airbnbs along the California coast where the Pacific Coast Highway passes through? While many road-trippers stick to hotels because they’re easier to manage (as in, just show up, check in, and go to sleep) and sometimes have on-site restaurants, some prefer private rentals.
If that’s the case, stick to these Airbnbs on the Pacific Coast Highway in California.

J & T Cottage in Morro Bay

Only three blocks from Atascadero Beach and with a rooftop patio with panoramic views, this Morro Bay hideaway is a cozy stop for your Route 1 road trip. You can shack up in a sleepy beach town at your leisure, and even take a day trip to one of the area’s many popular wineries. Expect tranquil vibes and classic beach cottage décor.
Casita cottage in Cayucos

Speaking of beach cottages, this gorgeous little bungalow is newly renovated and ready to host you for your mid-state stopover. Cayucos is close to Morro Bay and Cambria, letting you explore each beach town at your own pace. This is the most stylish rental of the bunch, with a picturesque little front yard with a fire pit and a professionally decorated interior. While you aren’t directly on the beach, you can see the waves from one block away.
Modern Coastal Suite in Cambria

With sweeping coastal views from its bird’s nest-style patio, this townhouse rental gives you a lay of the land. Plus, you have great views (and balconies) from the living room and bedroom. If you want to visit Hearst Castle, you’re only around a ten-minute drive—but don’t forget to visit the local Moonstone Beach tide pools.
Cliff House in Monterey

Want to splurge a little in the Big Sur area of California? This Monterey home offers unbeatable views thanks to its perch on a coastal cliff. (It’s not safe for children due to limited fencing.) Despite the remote tranquility, you’re only 15 minutes from Monterey and around 30 from Carmel. The Cliff House can sleep up to six, which is good, because you might need to split the bill here.
Sunset Landing home in Carmel-by-the-Sea

If you haven’t heard, Carmel-by-the-Sea is one of California’s most walkable and picturesque coastal villages. It’s a bit like a charming, Hallmark movie set. Though rentals can be a little costly, a stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea is absolutely worth it if you like romantic, quaint stays. Picture the type of mom-and-pop seaside establishments that New England is known for, just repackaged in a sunny, Cali format.
This first Carmel-by-the-Sea rental is located a bit outside of town. You have a whole acre to yourself, along with a hot tub with views of the coast. Just know that it’s a guest suite with owners on the property. They’re open to discounted rates for stays over thirty days, in case your Route 1 road trip is a sabbatical-type situation.
Barefoot Comfort guest house in Carmel-by-the-Sea

This lovely cottage puts you closer to the action in the heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea. You can walk to restaurants, shops, and the beach, letting you park your car and stretch your legs for a few days. It’s decked out with high-class amenities, too, like complimentary wine and cheese upon arrival, plus high-thread-count sheets. Like the other rental in Carmel-by-the-Sea, this property is a guest house on a larger plot.
The Owl’s Nest in Moss Landing

Bursting with personality, this one-bedroom rental is located above a popular restaurant in town, called The Haute Enchilada. (Perfect for fans of Mexican food.) There’s another surprise on the grounds, too: a pair of European barn owls named Teco and Valentina. You can watch them on live cam, or possibly spot them flying while you stay the night. You can also mingle with other guests, as this is a four-unit rental property.
El Nido guest suite in Aptos

Decorated by an artist and filled with bright, airy pieces, you’ll feel like you’re on a retreat at this one-bedroom guest house. The kitchenette doesn’t come with an oven or stove, making this better for short stays. Bird-lovers will also feel very welcome here; views from the bedroom overlook a bird sanctuary located on a watershed.
Charming Beach Pad in Montara

Looking for a cozy and affordable place to hole up on your road trip? This Montara studio is perfectly outfitted for a multi-day stay. There’s a full kitchen, a balcony with views, and a great location that puts you in town but not far from the beach. You’ll have total access to some of California’s most rugged, picturesque coastline.
Spectacular Spy Glass Treehouse in Occidental

Insanely creative and also upscale, this bespoke treehouse looks like something out of a fantasy film. Though you aren’t quite on the beach, you’re immersed in a forest of redwoods and other old-growth trees. Plus, there’s a hot tub located on the porch, letting you unwind in some of the country’s most stunning woodlands.
Timber Cove in Jenner

Speaking of stunning woodlands, Timber Cove gives you the keys to a remote, rejuvenating rental in the heart of the redwoods. Once again, there’s a large porch with a lovely hot tub that comes with forest views. When you want to venture off the property, you’ll find hiking trails, beaches, and even wineries close by.
Home in Sea Ranch

Sea Ranch is an exclusive seaside community where rentals can cost you an arm and a leg. But this brand-new rental isn’t overpriced, letting you explore a popular hub without overspending. Despite the reasonable price, this property is beautifully appointed and gives you access to local beaches and the Sea Ranch community pool. Just watch out for the check-in time—it’s not until 4 pm.
Oceanview home in Gualala

This ocean-view rental looks like a place a fairy would stay—in a good way. Wooden, organic features are accented with bright colors for a coastal, beachy setup that’s surrounded by trees and greenery. It’s a larger two-bedroom that’s great for larger groups, in case you’re meeting up with someone on your road trip or plan to caravan the whole way.
Redwood Cabin in Trinidad

With a porch overlooking the coast to die for, this cabin showcases the wild, rugged beauty of Northern California. In fact, it might be hard to leave—not only do you have coastal views and access to the beach, but you also have Redwood National and State Parks nearby. Just know that this cabin is a little rustic and off the beaten path—expect a few critters.
Oceanfront home in Crescent City

Lastly, I’m recommending this rental in Crescent City thanks to its lovely mid-century décor and its location smack on Crescent City’s coast. You’ll get to shack up across the street from the rocky beach and take on local adventures at your own pace, turning the small, sleepy town into your oyster.
