10 Beautiful Dauphin Island Vacation Homes On The Beach

    William Stupp
    September 29, 2022

A glance at the map tells you all you need to know about Dauphin Island. You’ll quickly ascertain that it is a barrier island in Alabama near the Mississippi border. 15 miles long and generally less than a quarter mile wide, it is essentially one long strip of pure white sandy shores.

    Videos by TravelAwaits

Needless to say, it is these beaches that attract sun-starved visitors. But with the beach comes other joys. The next several islands to the west are protected land, part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. This allows wildlife to thrive, both in the sea and in the air. Great hosts of birds, dolphins, and manatees continually grace Dauphin with their presence.

Not nearly as crowded as many other popular Gulf destinations, Dauphin Island nevertheless has good infrastructure and many things to do. There’s a bird sanctuary, Alabama’s finest aquarium, and ferries to take you the short jump to Fort Morgan, the site of a famous Civil War battle.

Most of the island does not have roads or buildings of any kind. Two-thirds of the island has nothing but white sands, making it easy to find quiet corners of paradise. Note that some of the beaches charge a $3 fee per person and most homes are on stilts and require guests to tackle a flight of stairs.

To discover this little slice of heaven on the Gulf, you’ll first need to find the right rental. Here are 10 examples of Vrbo rentals on Dauphin Island, none more than a short walk from the beach.

    Sassy Seagull$444/nightly avg

Perfect for a small group or even a couple who prefer cottages to condos, Sassy Seagull is another great Vrbo rental on Dauphin Island. Design and comfort go hand-in-hand on this property. The owners have forgone the lovable, but cliched nautical themes and taken a somewhat different approach. They were successful in their task. All three bedrooms have en suites and the living room is particularly sumptuous. The beach is, of course, just down the steps.

The house was very clean and well decorated. It was nice having a bathroom in each bedroom. The beach is right off the back deck. We enjoyed our stay.
This house is very nice! Comfortable beds, fully stocked kitchen and directly on the beach! Great place for friends to gather and celebrate a milestone birthday!
Very nice house – beautifully decorated and has very comfortable beds. It’s very well stocked with everything in the kitchen. A very private beach right at your doorstep. We will definitely rent this home again.

The beach was perfect, the house was beautiful and comfortable! We had a wonderful time. The little extras in the house made such a difference!

Stunning House At The End Of The Line$298/nightly avg

About a hundred yards from where the road ends, the owners of this four-bedroom beach house have a very special piece of property on their hands. So close is the water that they have had to build a small seawall to protect the backyard and foundation. Each bedroom has a comfortable bed (none are smaller than a double), an ocean view, and a hodgepodge of nautical decorations. The kitchen is fully equipped and the living room is quite comfy — not that you’ll be spending much time there when the beach is a much better lounging area. Best of all, dogs are welcome at the home and on the public beach.

This property was perfect for my family! We had 4 young children (all 5 and under), two sets of parents and me (grandma). We loved that the back deck was completely enclosed with only access from the house. It was a great safe place to hangout with the children and watch the sunsets and the dolphins swim by. We enjoyed the beach and the local aquarium! It was a wonderful time spent together with my grown children and grandchildren. The kitchen was well appointed, even came with a blender for smoothies and pina coladas! Definitely will rent this house again!
The property was fantastic, except for the horrible mattresses. I’ve had back surgery and not a single bed was comfortable for me. Otherwise, the location, decorations, and set up was perfect.
Wifi was awful!!! Couldn’t even make calls. This is bad because if there was an emergency we had no way of calling out.
We really enjoyed our stay!! The only suggestions I could give would be that some sort of walkway be made from the steps to the drive to keep from bringing half of the beach with you to your vehicle. Also I noticed on some of the other houses on the road a lift to carry the luggage. That would be really helpful since those steps are a beast when you have to make multiple trips with luggage. The only other thing is that the air conditioner had a hard time keeping the SW bed rooms cool so maybe some oscillating fans in those rooms would be helpful. All of that being said we are already planning next years trip back and can’t wait!!! Thanks so much for being wonderful host!!
On the positive side: We really enjoyed the location of the property in that it was nearly the last house before miles of beach to walk on (dogs not welcome on that beach, but are fine on the public beach a short distance away). There was a little area of private beach right at the house that was very sweet and clean and nice to sit and read a book or just listen to the waves and step in the water. It was very easy to access the home with the key code, and we found everything that we expected and needed inside. The back balcony picnic table was very nice to sit on and watch the sunset in the evening or play cards. We watched dolphins fishing right off the balcony. We caught a few speckled trout and some Atlantic spade fish. On the down side: The grill did not work (?perhaps just needs maintenance?), it was a little dirty: the housekeeper had not checked underneath sofas and chairs for quite some time, the carpet in the room I stayed in smelled like dog urine, toilet paper hanger was broken and had been placed in a window sill. There were some cockroaches about.I would guess they have multiple rentals and had not laid eyes on this place themselves in awhile. Wouldn’t take much to clean it up.

    Cottage On The Cove$281/nightly avg

Looking out on the cove at the northeastern edge of the island, thissmart cottage is a true delight. Not only is it practically next door to the Audubon Bird Sanctuary, but it’s also a short walk from the ferry, aquarium, and marina where you can rent a boat or book a fishing tour. Being on the coast facing the mainland makes for better birdwatching but it won’t prevent anyone from enjoying the Gulf waters (they’re about 15 minutes away on foot). The space is oriented towards large family groups. It has two main bedrooms and a bunk room which sleeps up to four.

We came from Arkansas, Missouri and Texas for a small family summer vacation to take our boat off shore. This was the perfect location to dock our boat with plenty of room inside and out in a beautiful super quite neighborhood. We loved how the home felt like “home”! Property owner was very helpful insuring we enjoy our stay. We will defiantly be coming back!
Our family of 6 had an amazing time at the LittleBlue house. Incredibly easy access to the water and a really friendly, relaxing location. We rented kayaks and brought our own paddle board and fishing gear. We caught lots of fish and really enjoyed the calm waters on the bay during the mornings and then a short drive over to the beaches to catch some waves. The house seemed MUCH larger than I expected with 4 bathrooms and quiet, cozy bedrooms! Hope to come back sometime
The water view was beautiful. House had plenty of room for our family of 5. Looks like there has been some renovations done and some still in progress. If you want a place that’s quiet and low key then Dauphin Island and this home is good for this. Owner was very helpful with providing any information or assistance. Aquarium was great on the one rainy day that we had. Rode the ferry. Spent time walking on the beach several days, lots of jellyfish in the water so swimming was out. There’s a few shops and restaurants on the island.
Great house in a perfect location! Love all the bedrooms with bathrooms.
Enjoyed our stay The house was just as advertised. We enjoyed fishing off the docks and just simply relaxing.

    Secluded Beach Retreat$371/nightly avg

Looking out from the driveway, this three-bedroom house could be mistaken for a bog standard home some miles from the Gulf. In actuality, it is a dream retreat a short walk from beaches straight out of paradise. A short trail through the tropical woods will take you to the sheltered beaches of Pelican Cove, ideal for swimmers wanting to avoid big waves. It is also perfectly placed to take walks on the Pelican Peninsula that juts out one mile into the Gulf from the mainland and is made up entirely of isolated beaches where, if one walks far enough, the only crowds you’ll see are herds of seals. Back at home, guests will enjoy two screened-in porches and an interior characterized by big open spaces and surprisingly large bedrooms (three of them, to be precise, each with a large bed).

We spent a lovely week on Dauphin Island to rest and relax. The house is wonderful, with a great kitchen and very comfortable beds. There are welcoming touches throughout. We loved the two screened porches and path out back to watch the sunset over the dunes. Sabine is a great, responsive host. We look forward to another visit!
We had the most amazing vacation at this stunning home! We picked this house as we wanted to be near the trails and the beach- but we also wanted privacy. We are a party of 8 – and this house was quite spacious and easily accommodated all of us. The photos cannot fully convey how spacious this gorgeous house is. Sabine has thought of everything. She sent us a bunch of information about the island before we arrived- helpful tips on the area etc and we were arrived to find a lovey welcome basket! The house is fully stocked and everything is top of the line. The beds are amazing. Usually I am eager to get back to my own bed- but not so here- the beds were super comfortable. Everyone in our party slept very well!We were there for spring migration and the house is so centrally located that we could pop in and out all day long and easily get right back to the nature trails. At the end of the day we could come home and grill and sit in the backyard and watch the wildlife right in the backyard. The view from the top of the dune in the back yard is stunning! Not everyone in our party is into birding- but they all still had so much to do on the island and we could all easily meet up for lunch mid-day. We rented golf carts and it was such a fun way to travel around the island! We loved everything about this house and Dauphin Island. It was truly a perfect vacation!
This was our first visit to Dauphin Island. We selected this property on Vrbo for the beautiful private setting. The house is even more beautiful than in the photos. When we arrived and walked in the door, the first word out of my mouth was “Amazing”. The house is beautifully decorated with stunning art throughout the home. Every room was crystal clean. The beds in each of the 4 bedrooms were extremely comfortable. The kitchen had all of the dishware and cookware needed to prepare meals. There was a television in the living room along with a shelf full of games and books. The back screened in porches were wonderful for relaxing on with lounge chairs and padded chairs. The back yard was private and had a covered area for grilling. Our favorite surprise was the path behind the house that brought you up to the top of the dunes. There were two wooden rocking chairs at the top with spectacular views over the dunes to the Gulf.We definitely will plan a future visit to Dauphin Island and stay at this beautiful home again!
This property was perfect for a family getaway. If you are looking for a place with plenty of gathering space as well as plenty to sleep, this is it. I know sometimes you get a place to “sleep 6-8” and there isn’t much room to gather, but this home had plenty of room for everyone. The home is exactly how it looks online. The outdoor shower was a huge bonus for us! I can’t imagine how much sand finds its way inside without it. While it’s not right on the beach, it’s a short walk/drive from the house. We much preferred pelican cove with a 2 year old. He loved the much calmer water to play in! I would say the most reassuring part is that the owner was tremendous with communication and organization for the guests. This was our first time to Dauphin Island and we will certainly be back!
Our host was very helpful. Our check in was easy. The house had all the amenities anyone could have wanted. It was fully stocked with nice linens & towels. Everything was recently updated Even new appliances. The open floor plan was perfect. Every bedroom was big. With a very nice bathroom. We would definitely rent again.

The house was perfect for our group. We had an issue with the ice maker in the refrigerator and Vacasa was there to take care of it right away! They even brought us a big bag of ice!
House was way roomier than we expected – we had 3 families (with 6 kids) and there was plenty of room! Back porch was huge and so nice to sit and eat on! The proximity to the beach can’t be beat – literally steps from the ocean which is SO nice with lots of kid gear and little ones who need to use the bathroom often. Dauphin island isn’t super convenient for groceries and restaurants, but we did a pickup order in Mobile on our way down and just grabbed shrimp one night from a local steamer instead of eating out. It was a great trip!!
There is nothing not to love about this place. Great house, beach, and island. Looking forward to another stay.
The house is fantastic and the beach to
Gorgeous house! Very well equipped and RIGHT on the water!! Couldn’t have asked for much better! Made amazing family memories we will never forget!

Every Bedroom had a Full Bath. 2 King Bedrooms, 1 Queen Bedroom and a Bedroom with 2 sets of Bunk beds that sleeps 4. Total of 4 Bedrooms and 4 Bathrooms. The Bayside porch was Awesome and Huge. We had two toddlers ages 2 and 3 and the Bayside porch was a lifesaver . The pool is also on the back porch. It has a Gate the babies couldn’t open so they could play on the porch without us worrying about the pool. The House is across the street from the Beach but a short walk. We also went to the Bay which the Kids loved, plenty of sand and water for them to play in. There’s a gas grill on the back deck. Stop at Walmart before you get there to get groceries because there is no store close the house except for a Chevron gas station. The Walmart is about 30 to 40 minutes from the house. We had a Wonderful time. Awesome house
    The process was easy.
This house, location, pool, is perfection!!Best home I’ve stayed at ever!!
Located on the West End beach, this house was the perfect place. The house fits large groups comfortably with 4 large bedrooms rooms and 4 large bathrooms. The home is brand new and feels very welcoming. You have a washer and dryer to wash clothes and the kitchen is fully stocked. The best part was that you have theBay and the Gulf with this house- and a pool!! The kids were swimming everyday, fishing, and even went jet skiing. Highly Recommend!
Great location. Plenty of room. Every bedroom had a private bathroom. Loved the arrangement of the kitchen. The deck had everything including a pool. I can’t imagine anything this house doesn’t have. ( an elevator would be nice.) It is furnished well, as well. There were some minor issues left from the previous renters but Vacasa fixed those immediately. Very sweet Vacasa lady. Probably the best vacation ever.

Everyone had a fabulous time at this property. The sun rise and sun sets were spectacular! The property is well maintained and clean. We look forward to staying here again next year.
Couldn’t get a better view! Large open floor plan downstairs, beautiful view from the incredible deck. Lots of room for everyone to spread out downstairs. Kitchen is fairly well-equipped, but we did have to go out a get a few things, which we donated to the house for the next folks who rent it. Coffee maker is dual coffee pot and Keurig, which we didn’t know beforehand, but is helpful to know.Huge master suite downstairs, 5 bedrooms upstairs are small and only have room for a bed, one dresser, and one bedside table. Everything was clean and ready for us upon arrival. Lots of stairs up to the house, and then to go upstairs, so plan for that. Hauling stuff up and down needs to be planned for, because it doesn’t happen quickly. Management responded pretty quickly to needs when we let them know about any issues. Overall, we were very pleased with the house and thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
This house is perfect to bring a whole family of all ages. We had space on either side of us at the beach for all the kids to explore and generally manage themselves. PRO TIP: Get a ballon tire cart of some sort, the plastic wheeled carts just won’t work. Mark
Loved the house. Had plenty of room for all of us to be comfortable. The 4.5 bathrooms were one of the best features. We had 3 adults and 9 kids ( from ages 8 – 16). Beach was just a short walk out the back door and pretty secluded. We enjoyed the extras the house had to offer: Beach toys (boogie boards, buckets, shovels…), charcoal grill and the outdoor shower with hot water. We enjoyed our nights sitting on the balcony listening to the waves. Would definitely stay hear again. Already planning for next year!

Large Family Home At Audubon Place$456/nightly avg

The far eastern portion of the island is home to most of its shops and restaurants, a historic 19th-century fort, and thislovely six-bedroom home. There’s water all around: a pond in the backyard, a canal popular with birds, and, of course, the Gulf of Mexico. The home is just a few hundred feet from the boardwalk that leads to the water. The kitchen is modern in terms of design and appliances. The master bedroom, with its lovely custom walk-in shower, is downstairs, as is a queen and a room with two twins. There are three more bedrooms upstairs with two queen-sized beds and a room with a bunk bed.

nice home but pans were terrible. down stairs bed had broken bed frame. two cup coffee maker was broken. it’s a beautiful house but needs some attention.
Our family had a “Great Escape” for 7 fun-filled days at Dauphin Island, Alabama. For years we’ve enjoyed vacation time in Orange Beach/Gulf Shores, but decided to try something new. We couldn’t have been happier with this vacation home! The location was perfect! We hope to be able to rent this property again
Rental company should have prepared for our arrival, there was no propane so very cold, could not take showers or cook. Got gas next afternoon. Thanks for Elijah! Also lady who took my calls, @ electric heaters!
Loved the house. Clean. High end everything. Once you get on beach, front row home owners do not let you sit in front of their homes. So we had an issue with where to set up each day. 15 of us so took a lot of space. House was perfect though.
This beach house is beautiful! New home, great location and wonderful views of the ocean. Our only concerns were that for a six bedroom home, more than 4 coffee cups should be provided and they had zero wine glasses. Home was not clean upon arrival. We left the home in better shape than we found it! Plan on cooking if you visit this island, best place to eat was picking up food at Skinner’s! Skinner’s food and service was awesome!

For the third year our family enjoyed the unsurpassed view of the Gulf at this huge home directly off the beach. With six bedrooms, there was a room for each of two couples AND Grandma AND the two teens, PLUS the spacious bunk room for three boys. From an adult viewpoint, the huge big screen TV and open family room/kitchen design made gathering all together for playing games – and watching “The Game” – ideal. But the number of bedrooms also gave the Introverts and tired folk necessary privacy. All the beach chairs, equipment and towels on property saved us valuable trunk space. The kiddos enjoyed the boogie boards, sand toys and kayaks, as well as biking to the pool when they needed a break from sand and waves. Another favorite was napping and reading in the hammocks we brought with us and installed in the pine trees right off the beach. Each year the owner, Meg, has been prompt in answering our texts. She’s also provided fabulous suggestions for visits to the DI estuarium and tours of Forts Morgan and Gaines, all of which we enjoyed. (Just down the main street is an amazing wild bird sanctuary, so birders will be well-rewarded if they bring their binoculars.) Meg’s family grew up vacationing here, and she freely shares tips to make you feel right at home. (One of her recommendations was to visit Skinners Seafood right off Bienville. Amazing flavors, fresh caught, Skinners has THE BEST seafood bisque and clam chowder ready made-to-go as well as crab claws, scallops, etc. For us, beach is synonymous with seafood, and Skinners is the best.). It’s obvious that this host truly cares about her guests’ vacation experience as much as if we were her family!
Property was perfect for our family/extended family. It had everything we needed for our visit, beach was beautiful with sunrise/sunsets. They had lots of rain prior to our visit and I think that encouraged the mosquitos and gnats a bit more than usual and there was an influx of jellyfish (along the whole gulf coast) that made swimming and beaching a bit more challenging. On a bright note the wildlife of crabs, lizards, box turtles, and frogs kept the kids enjoying the stay and naming them as we watched them do their daily routines. We look forward to trying Dauphin Island again as the home, island and atmosphere were exactly what we were looking for.
Home was as expected, very clean with a great beach location. The only downside is the limit of guests due to the HOA. A 6 bedroom home could fit more people than what’s allowed which would help with the cost to rent. We hope to stay again.
We have stayed here several times and we love it! The house and beach are amazing. The house is a perfect fit for our family.
Property was as described. We thoroughly enjoyed our week here. THANK YOU!

    High Dunes Retreat$483/nightly avg

With excellent views in every direction, guests at High Dunes Retreat may struggle with decision-making when it comes time to set out. It’s easy to enjoy the sights (especially from the rooftop viewing platform), but much more rewarding to leave the home. But, where do you go? Pelican Cove on the Gulf is a short walk down the hill, as is Graveline Bay across from the mainland. Both are great for kayaking (the home has three kayaks), but those looking for quiet beaches to lounge on should walk down the Pelican Peninsula until they find the perfect spot. Complimentary bicycles mean the whole island is accessible. With so much potential for fun, the owners saw it fit to make sure as many people as possible can enjoy the home, designing it to sleep up to 16 guests.

THANK YOU!
