12 Lake Tahoe Mountain Retreats Perfect To Rent In Any Season

    Laura Ray
    February 06, 2022

Whether you’re heading to Tahoe to hike and bike in the summer or ski in the winter, you’re going to need a place to rest your pretty little head after a day on the trails or the slopes. Lake Tahoe straddles the border of California and Nevada, which divides it from east to west, but it’s also divided from north to south. North Lake Tahoe offers a laidback, relaxed vibe, while South Lake is all about the nightlife and casinos.

    Videos by TravelAwaits

What they have in common is the glittering blue waters of the 25,000-year-old lake for which the area is named. Renowned for its crystal-clear waters, Lake Tahoe boasts some of the purest waters in North America. It is one of the largest Alpine lakes in the country and the second deepest behind Oregon’s Crater Lake. High in the Sierra Nevadas, the mesmerizing lake is surrounded by a panoramic backdrop of snow-capped mountains and sugar pines.

This picturesque playground makes for the perfect place for watersports, fishing, boating, and other summertime activities. Of course, Lake Tahoe is also known as a winter retreat, thanks to several area ski resorts. If you do visit during ski season, we recommend driving an all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicle with good snow tires. High elevations mean steep inclines and roads can get extremely icy and slippery.

From lakefront lodges to cozy cabins, Vrbo offers some stellar mountain retreats. We’ve done all the work for you, so now you can just sit back and scroll through these top-rated Lake Tahoe vacation rentals.

Meeks Bay Lakefront Home With Private Pier

Why does this lakefront property cost thousands of dollars a night? Because it offers gorgeous panoramic views of Lake Tahoe from almost every room and a private pier. Situated on Meeks Bay, this sprawling five-bedroom, four-bath ranch-style home sleeps 14. Do note that this vacation rental must be booked by the week in the peak summer months.

Its main bedroom has a king-sized bed, private bath, and a view of the water that stretches across to Nevada and South Lake Tahoe. Back-to-back bedrooms offer queen beds and sliding glass doors to the deck, while two hallway bathrooms feature jetted tubs. A loft offers built-in bunk beds for the kiddos, while a fifth bedroom has two twin beds.

Highlights include an indoor grill, laundry room, wood-burning fireplace, ample decks, and a stone patio. No pets are allowed. Parking is provided for two to six cars, depending on the season. Chains or snow tires are required during winter.

This place has everything you need to have an amazing vacation at Lake Tahoe. The views from the deck and dock are unforgettable, and the house has all the space and amenities you could want. We were able to dock our boat in the private boat house which made boating the lake even easier.
We rented the property for a girl’s weekend. The place was perfect! Amazing views! Outdoorsy girls did nearby hiking; other girls went into town for shopping. We hired a personal chef at the recommendation of the property company. It was a perfect evening and a fabulous weekend!

Of all the extended family vacations we’ve had over the years, this ended up being our absolute favorite. The house and location right on the water were AMAZING. We couldnt believe how beautiful Lake Tahoe is. The house was large and extremely well stocked. The one thing that was unpleasant about the house was how hot it could get at certain times of the day. Fans helped but had i know i would have brought small portable AC units for certain rooms at night. My daughters room was a sweltering 85 degrees one night despite all efforts. One other concern was that there was not a safe way to get down to the beach for my elderly parents. A sturdy set of steps with a railing would have been much appreciated, not just a pile of loose rocks with a chain for a handrail. For the cost of staying here i feel like these issues could be easily addressed and would make for a better experience overall.
The house was stunning and absolutely perfect for our family of 12. Would highly recommend this home to anyone!
Property was clean and beautiful in an excellent location. Great place to stay.
Amazing lake house. From the several outdoor sitting areas to just hanging out on the dock this property is just perfect. 3 families gathered where we bque, sat on dock watching sunset, sunrise and moonrise, rented a boat and even woke up and did yoga on the beautiful deck. Couldn’t have imagined a better gathering place. Thank you Susan!
Beautiful home in an ideal location right on the water. And there was enough room for all 4 families. Also many supplies in the kitchen that we did not need to purchase at the store, so that helped.

Cora’s home in Talmont is nicely done and with plenty of amenities and space. Kitchen pots, pans, utensils, etc are well-stocked. The garage was a nice perk to keep out of the storm. The kids really enjoyed the extra living room and bunk beds downstairs. Thanks Cora!
Stayed with our family of 6 over the holiday weekend – so nice!
What a wonderful week in Tahoe, and staying at this lovely home really did make it perfect. We loved the location near Paige Meadows (easy access to the hiking trails), and also being able to use the Tahoe Park beach/amenities. The home was clean and beautifully decorated. The beds and bedding were very comfortable. Everything felt new and the kitchen was fully stocked with everything we could need to cook. The deck was a wonderful place to enjoy a morning cup of coffee or evening glass of wine. My husband enjoyed grilling on the propane BBQ. Our boys enjoyed the lower level movie and game room, and also the ping pong table in the garage. The house had plenty of space for our two families (group of 8).The owner, Cora, was very helpful and easy to work with. We would absolutely like to rent this house again, and we have no need to look any further for the perfect place to stay in Tahoe!
Great central location to all our favorite restaurants and family activities. Loved the family game room as another hangout spot for kids, fully stocked with games! Property owner was very helpful and responsive. Check in and check out was seamless, very thorough instructions made the process stress-free. Thanks Cora!!
Very nice property and owner very easy to work with.

The home was beautiful, everything top quality. Definitely would stay again. Our hosts were so kind (the most delicious fresh bread and adult drinks for when we arrived) and helpful (sharing local beaches).
We rented this property for 6 adults to attend a wedding in the village. It is stocked with everything you would need. They have utilized the space so well. So clean, well kept and comfortable. We will be back!
    Really enjoyed our stay here
This little place has everything you need. It’s a 1/2 mile walk to the village. It is a hike back up the mountain on the way back, but my kids enjoyed it. Loved the large family room.
Gorgeous build with high end finishes on everything. Owners pay attention to small details that add to a positive experience. A nice touch was having coffee and cocktail fixing already waiting for us! Kitchen was well stocked. Beds were quite comfortable. Gas fireplace was very enjoyable. Owners live next door and were very responsive. We had friends in the unit above the garage which was also equally as nice. The Mountaineer Shuttle service to ski was easy and made getting to the mountain a breeze without having to move the car.

Everything was perfect. Tahoe is a very special place to our family. We’ve been visiting the lake for three generations so we greatly appreciated the homeowner’s dedication to preserving the property’s original character and sharing this important part of the lake’s history. The house was so perfect we never needed to leave. All meals were cooked and enjoyed lakeside. We rented a boat within walking distance and enjoyed a day on the lake. We relaxed on the dock. Thank you Sheila!
This beautiful cabin is charming, comfortable, and very well equipped. Lakefront views are stunning. Location is very convenient to restaurants and grocery stores, yet secluded and private. Shelia and Eric were wonderful hosts who made sure that we had everything we needed for an amazing stay. We can’t wait to return to this truly special place!
Have rented this property two years running and look forward to returning again! Beautiful setting on the lake, friendly hosts, and an ideal location for feeling completely removed from it all — but can also get to the Safeway in less than 5 min. 😉 What’s not to love?!
We booked this property for a 50th wedding anniversary celebration six months in advance and the whole family was looking forward to it with great anticipation. Not only did it not disappoint, it exceeded our expectations! Check in and check out were easy, the hosts were friendly, the view and lake access were incomparable, the beds were comfortable, the kitchen was well appointed, and everywhere you look you see attention to detail and the love of its owners shining through. A joy and a delight! Would return in a heartbeat.
Beautiful property with wonderful lake access. Incredibly well-stocked kitchen made it easy to cook fantastic meals that we enjoyed on the deck overlooking the lake. Kind hosts responded immediately when the barbecue needed additional propane. Plentiful towels and great to be able to use kayaks and paddle boards. We loved our trip overall. The only drawback for us was being right next door to a boatyard/marina. We heard heavy equipment lifting boats off racks as early as 6am most days. Then, the equipment and boat traffic was present all day when reading on the dock.

We had wonderful time as family. Our host Chris was very helpful. We will definitely return!
The house is amazing and so well stocked. Never have I had a place with so many thoughtful touches. I really want to keep this gem to myself so it isn’t booked when we are able to return but that isn’t fair to Chris. The location is perfect and the neighborhood is quiet. Got to have a National Geographic moment one morning as a bear came cruising between the houses and did his back scratching on a tree out back. The hot tub is very well maintained just like the house. I can’t say enough good things about the house, location, and host!! Chris responds in record time & is so accommodating! Plus he goes above and beyond. Love this place and are working on returning again. The beach is fantastic and just a short 3 block walk from the house. Awesome time in Tahoe!!!
We had a wonderful weeklong stay at this property. The location was chef’s kiss with a 3 minute walk to the lake where you could rent kayaks and paddle boards. Mini golf and Gar Woods (Wet Woodies) is just a very short walk! My kids loved the jacuzzi. Chris (the owner) was extremely attentive and responsive when I reached out to him. The house was fully equipped with literally anything you might need to cook a nice meal! Perfect house for two families with kids as the house has two bedrooms upstairs and two downstairs. Overall it was a wonderful stay!
This house was close to everything we wanted to do in Tahoe, it was comfortable and well stocked (grill, hot tub, etc.), and Chris was extremely responsive to all the little questions we had. We’d definitely stay here again!
The house was exactly as advertised. Great location and Owner was very responsive. We will definitely visit this property again.

Really happy with location! Being right on the lake was lovely and condo was well-appointed and clean. Plenty of trash bags, TP, Kleenex etc. Also, helpful with boat rentals.
5 star townhome right on the lake, this was perfect for our wedding weekend with my two stepdaughters. Conveniently located to experience the peace and quiet of the lake but also just a couple miles away from downtown South Lake. If you want to come for a pool and hot tub, I wouldn’t recommend this location, but otherwise, just perfect.

This lakefront location boasts a private beach, marina, and swim platform. Plus, there’s two-mile walking path along the lakeshore. It’s also centrally located, with Diamond Peak Ski Resort just five minutes away. Northstar is 15 minutes away and Squaw and Alpine are about 30 minutes away. World-class golf and hiking are just minutes away while Tahoe City is 15 minutes away. Incline Village offers shopping and restaurants with a quaint small-town vibe.

Both the location and the lakefront condo were peaceful and beautiful. One couldn’t ask for anything more in a property. And communication with the owner was always easy. We were sad to leave, but we know we will someday return to this slice of heaven.
My wife and I were very reluctant to leave but unfortunately we had to. We love the Tahoe area and this home helped to make it especially relaxing as we were able to have our afternoon tea on the balcony after spending the day hiking and touring. Communication with Mary was terrific and she made us feel so welcome in her home. We highly recommend staying in this home and will do so again in the future. Thanks so much!Phil and Theresa
Perfect experience. Condo one of the nicest if not the best we have ever rented. Absolutely beautiful location right on the water, and gorgeous interior. The owner was wonderful to work with from the time we rented until we checked out. If ever in Tahoe again, this is only place we will stay.
    quite, clean, great views
I just returned from my 3rd stay here and cannot recommend it enough. If you’re looking for a lovely home with a tranquil vibe and a jaw-dropping view, look no more! It’s the perfect location for hiking, snowshoeing, and more.
