Though small, Taos, New Mexico, has a commanding reputation in the travel world.
Videos by TravelAwaits
The town is located at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which is one of New Mexico’s premier skiing and hiking destinations. Mountains aside, Taos is a picture-perfect desert town that’s full of unique characters. It’s even considered the birthplace of the Earth Ship, a sustainable, modular type of home that now has a global impact.
In other words, you’ve got natural wonders coupled with a seriously quirky and independent small-town atmosphere. You can ski, you can stargaze, you can shop at dozens of local galleries and boutiques—it’s a solid setup for just about any type of traveler.
During my visits to Taos, I’ve been lucky enough to stay with friends and at private rentals. In both cases, I stayed in adobe-style homes, which is the only time in my life I’ve had the opportunity to cozy up by a kiva fireplace.
While I’d love to recommend a list of Earth Ships that you can rent on Airbnb, they aren’t always beginner-friendly. You might need to perform some basic maintenance, and you might not have as much electricity or warm water as you’re used to.
Instead, I recommend booking an adobe Airbnb in Taos—they’re varied, they’re comfortable, and they’re a hands-off way to soak up the Southwest. You’ll notice some are located in El Prado, which is a separate town that borders Taos to the north.

Private adobe studio (Taos)

This adorable historic Adobe studio was once a creative studio for Ralph Meyers. Meyers is a homegrown Taos painter who helped create the Spanish Colonial and Southwestern design that the area is known for, thanks to his creative projects. Meyers was known for buying and renovating Adobe studios, which he would lease and sell to other artists. Here, you can live up to that history at this Adobe. It has a lovely flower-filled courtyard that leads to Taos’s beloved historic district.
