Boston is a sprawling city, but many of its central, downtown neighborhoods are still walkable.
Videos by TravelAwaits
That’s part of Bean Town’s charm—it’s got history that you can feel with a simple stroll, whether you’re in the mood for architecture, historic landmarks, or even dessert. You’ll stumble upon sites like the Freedom Trail, Fenway Park, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
But you might want to be careful about where you stay if walkability is high on your priority list. Not all of Boston’s neighborhoods are accessible to pedestrians or are located near public transportation.
If you want to walk your way across the city, I recommend staying in the city’s highly walkable neighborhoods. Lucky for you, that’s a pretty large spread, including popular areas like Beacon Hill, North End, South End, West End, Back Bay, Bay Village, and Downtown… amongst others.
Here’s your short list of the best Airbnbs in Boston in walkable neighborhoods. (You might notice these neighborhoods are also some of the priciest—I’ve done my best to find Airbnbs that won’t push you into the red for a week-long booking.)
Top 3 Airbnbs in Boston in walkable neighborhoods
- Coolest setup: Condo in Back Bay
- Great for couples: Brownstone studio in Beacon Hill
- Most affordable: Condo with rooftop in North End
Airbnbs in Boston in walkable areas
Studio in the South End

This gorgeous studio is located on Worcester Street in one of South End’s prime areas. You’ve got art galleries, cozy cafes, and tree-lined streets in just about every direction. As a perk, this studio is also located in one of the grand Brownstones, giving you a comfortable stay with historic features. Just know that there’s no full kitchen—instead, you have a highly functional kitchenette.
One-bedroom apartment in the South End

Just steps from Boston Common, this one-bedroom puts you on a quiet street in Bay Village on the border with the South End. That gives you access to the Theatre District, along with the South End. You’ve got everything you need for a cozy stay, including a full kitchen. Just know that it’s located on the third floor and doesn’t have an elevator.
Condo with rooftop in North End

Shack up in the heart of Boston’s famous North End neighborhood. Whether you’re heading to TD Garden or the Freedom Trail, you’re just steps away from the action. This rental is a fourth-floor walkup, meaning you need to be in shape to enjoy it. As a reward, you have access to a private rooftop area where you can drool over the downtown views with a bit of greenery.
Studio in Beacon Hill

This lovely studio is small, but it packs a punch when it comes to functionality and location. You’re located in the heart of Beacon Hill near its loveliest cobblestone streets and row houses. Boston Common is also just a few steps away. Still, despite the studio’s small size, the kitchen and bathroom are both full-sized and fully stocked for a short or long stay.
Brownstone studio in Beacon Hill

Nestled amid Beacon Hill’s prettiest brownstones, this studio delivers on charm. The historic features have been well-maintained, giving you plenty of charm and coziness. In addition to a full kitchen and a subway-tiled bathroom, you can enjoy a furnished backyard patio.
Historic one-bedroom in Beacon Hill

If you really want to maximize the historic charm at your Airbnb rental, this one-bedroom is located inside a Brownstone that comes with bay windows, high ceilings, and a grand fireplace. It’s also much larger than other historic options on this list, giving you space to kick back and unwind. Plus, there’s a small patio out back
Studio in the second-oldest home in Beacon Hill

Here’s my last historic Airbnb in Beacon Hill—and it’s located inside the neighborhood’s second-oldest home, which dates back to 1789. The hosts are the couple who live on the first-floor. The studio is located in the basement. Despite its age, this studio is beautifully renovated and has a spa-like feel. Just know that there’s no full kitchen, only a basic kitchenette.
One-bedroom rental in Back Bay

Called the Ellie House, this one-bedroom is located on the border between Back Bay and South End. You’re surrounded by classic tree-lined brownstones and major cultural landmarks. This rental can also sleep up to four, thanks to a sofa bed in the living room, in case you’re traveling in a group. It’s also a bit more high-design than the others, in case you like life’s finer things.
Condo in Back Bay

Designed with rich details (like a curved, wooden staircase), this condo is a true gem. You’re set up on a cozy brick-lined and tree-lined street, close enough to walk to cultural stops, cozy cafes, and more. But the real magic is just how cozy this rental feels. It earns its luxury designation thanks to its upscale features and thought-out setup. Just make sure to read the house manual—you might want a few pointers before booking, as this rental is in a historic building.
One-bedroom in FiDi

I didn’t introduce Boston’s FiDi (financial district) when talking about walkable neighborhoods, but the downtown-adjacent area is quickly becoming a hub. You can find Airbnb rentals in its many high-rises, including this one-bedroom. It’s a serviced apartment with a familiar setup and modern features like self-check-in and smart-lock systems.
