If you go to Dallas and skip out on Deep Ellum, have you really visited?
Videos by TravelAwaits
Deep Ellum is one of Dallas’s cultural hearts. It’s a historic center framed around Elm Street, where a railroad junction was completed in the 1870s. Deep Ellum evolved around opportunities and businesses that served the rail lines passing through. But by the 1970s and 80s, real estate speculation caused many shops and buildings to empty.
Then came the artists. By the mid-1980s, some local publications were starting to show interest in Deep Ellum—one magazine even dubbed it ‘Dallas’s Soho’ thanks to its burgeoning arts and bohemian scene.
Today, you can feel the remnants of this artistic explosion. In addition to galleries and arts venues, there are bars, lounges, live music venues, businesses, and even residential buildings.
It’s also one of the best places to shack up during your stay in Dallas. (Full disclosure: If you’re going to stay longer than a week, you might want a neighborhood that’s quieter than Deep Ellum. It’s a bustling zone.)
