Mexico is one of the premier winter destinations for Americans who want to escape the chill. That being said, you might feel a little bored or even be priced out of hotspots like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Mexico City.

Looking for where to go in Mexico in December—without reading through another list of well-known destinations? Start with this list. I’ve rounded up some popular spots around the country that you might not have heard of before.
I’ve split my picks based on factors like nature, culture, immersion, beach vibes, and driving distance from the US. (By immersion, I mean that you can live like a local and not be relegated to resorts or compounds.)
Where to go in Mexico in December for beautiful nature
Bacalar, Quintana Roo

Located on the border with Belize, Bacalar is a lush, colorful escape by the sea. Paradise awaits in hotspots like the Lagoon of Seven Colors and the local Azul Cenote. In winter, the water might be warm enough to take a dip. Even if it isn’t, you’ll have plenty to do between watching sunsets in the sand, eating fresh seafood, and exploring Bacalar’s nature preserves.

Copper Canyon, Chihuahua

Did you know that Mexico’s Copper Canyon is four times the size of the US’s Grand Canyon? While it doesn’t offer the same dramatic South Rim-style views, it’s a hidden natural wonder that includes six distinct canyons.
To get there, you’ll take a 400-mile train trip through the area’s steep gorges, covered in some greenery and home to multiple waterfalls. Just know that it’s best suited for outdoorsy types who like backpacking and hiking. Oh, and you might need a week or so to hit the area’s top spots, like Valley of the Monks and Lake Arareco.

Where to go in Mexico in December for great culture
Oaxaca City, Oaxaca

There’s something for everyone in Mexico’s hottest new destination. From cultural tours to visiting historic ruins to shopping at the city’s colorful boutiques, there’s a novel new adventure waiting around every corner. Just make sure to arrive hungry. Oaxaca is globally renowned for its foodie offerings.

Merida, Yucatan

Merida is the capital of Yucatan—you might know it for its proximity to Chichen Itza. But this city is worth exploring even without the trip to the famous ruins. In fact, it’s a hub for modern Mayan culture, which you can experience in its museums, menus, and exciting festivals. Plus, you can explore the area’s colonial legacy via architecture. Consider it a gateway to Mexican culture—and its popular resort towns, should you choose to visit them.

Where to go in Mexico in December for an immersive trip
San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas

Want a view of Mexico that you’ve never had before? San Cristobal de las Casas has a traditional, colonial village center that’s home to delicious restaurants and unique hotels.
But it’s also a cultural hub where you can experience the fusion between local Mayan traditions and the hodge-podge of the area’s eclectic, international residents. If you’re looking to soak up indigenous heritage, San Cristobal de las Casas (along with Oaxaca city) is a great pick.

Patzcuaro, Michoacan

Part of Mexico’s ‘magic pueblos’ series, Patzcuaro is well-known for its larger-than-life Day of the Dead celebrations and its eponymous lake that almost encircles the city.
But I think it’s a great stop for anyone who wants an immersive place to visit in Mexico during winter. The area retains its ties to the indigenous Purepecha culture, giving you the chance to explore Mexico’s traditional roots through artisanal markets, delicious culinary practices, and seasonal festivities. At the same time, it’s a quieter escape where you can drop off the map for a while.

Where to go in Mexico in December for beach vibes
Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca

Considered Mexico’s de facto surf town, Puerto Escondido is a tropical village where many people still make their living fishing in the bright blue waters. Along with its championship surfing, you can expect to dive and snorkel—including during December’s warmer days.
When the temperatures drop, you can also go kayaking, boating, bird-watching, horseback riding, and more. It’s got plenty of travel-focused infrastructure, in case you prefer to stay on the trodden tourist path.

Where to go in Mexico that’s close enough to drive to
Puerto Penasco, Sonora

Located on the California Gulf, you can reach Puerto Penasco in a few hours by driving from San Diego. The area livens up a bit in December as winter birds arrive in search of sandy beaches, the calming atmosphere, and tons of sunshine. You can go bougie at an upscale resort, if you want, or keep it casual with a private rental. From there, the area’s nature parks and outdoors adventures are all within reach.

Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California

Like Puerto Penasco, Valle de Guadalupe is a short drive from San Diego—and it’s got one of the lesser-known reasons to visit Northern Mexico. That’s the rich vineyards that blanket the hills and produce delicious wines.
You can stay directly on a vineyard if you want access to its tasting room around the clock. Or you can book a stay at one of the area’s many eco-resorts. Just make sure you come hungry—in addition to its vineyards, the town’s restaurants are also highly regarded.
