Amtrak Adds $20 ‘Night Owl’ Routes — Which Cities Are Served

Amtrak has exciting news for anybody who doesn’t live in the area but wants to attend evening plays, concerts, and sporting events in Boston and New York.

“Night Owl fares are expanding!” Amtrak recently announced. “These low fares are already available on select off-peak-hour trains traveling between Washington D.C. and New York City, and now also from New York City to Boston — and stops in between. Skip the hassles of airports and driving.”

What’s more, one-way coach fares from Boston to New York City are just $20.

How Night Owl Trains Work

Amtrak offers Night Owl fares for a number of off-peak-hour trains running along the Northeast Corridor.

The off-peak-hour trains traveling between Washington, D.C. and New York — and now New York and Boston — depart between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., so they are equally appealing to “early birds,” Amtrak explains.

Here are some sample Night Owl one-way coach fares:

• Boston to New York: $20
• Providence to New Haven: $10
• Boston to Providence: $5
• Boston to New Haven: $15
• New York to Washington: $20
• New York to Philadelphia: $10
• Philadelphia to Baltimore/BWI: $5
• Washington to Baltimore/BWI: $5
• Philadelphia to Washington: $10
• New York to Baltimore/BWI: $15

Know So You Can Go

Night Owl fares offer coach service on Amtrak’s trains. That means, for example, that passengers will be seated in “large comfortable leather seats, with plenty of space and legroom to stretch out or curl up,” Amtrak notes. There also aren’t middle seats so passengers don’t need to worry about being sandwiched between other riders.

Additionally, passengers can travel with up to four bags for free: Two personal bags and two others as well. Plus, they can arrive at the train station minutes, not hours, before departure so boarding is quick and easy.

Finally, there’s even a designated quiet car for anybody who wants to rest during the journey.
