When autumn rolls around, autumn-loving Americans tend to zero in on New England and the Rocky Mountains. The former is home to some of the most commanding leaf-changing displays in the world—and the latter isn’t too shabby, either.

Montana doesn’t often end up high on the list of autumn destinations… but not for its lack of gorgeous leaves. Forests blanket nearly 30% of the state’s total land, meaning it’s got more than a few hiking trails where you can surround yourself by fall foliage.
According to the Department of Natural Resources, there are close to 26 million forested acres.
So, if you’re after quality woodlands where the colors of autumn are at full force, a visit to Bozeman, Missoula, or Glacier National Park won’t do you wrong. That being said, the autumn season in Montana isn’t like New England—or even further south in Colorado.
Using the state’s brand-new fall foliage map, you can plan the perfect autumn escape—even if you’ve never visited The Treasure State before.
A look at Montana’s fall foliage map, including how to use it
The first thing you need to know about chasing autumn displays in Montana is that the season goes by quickly—and it comes early. That’s partly thanks to its northern climate and its high elevations.
Its peak foliage season is most often from late September to mid-October, giving you a short window to maximize your leaf-peeping experience. Thankfully, you can easily plan out a road trip across the state using its fall foliage map.
The map estimates regional timings based on recent temperature, frost, precipitation, and available ground observations. But conditions can shift quickly, especially when winds pick up. The map also forecasts changing leaves, meaning you can plan out your route weeks ahead of time.
To use the map, head to the Visit Montana Press Room. Scroll until you see the fall foliage map—you won’t miss it. The map uses six colors to label its leaf-changing zones, ranging from little to no color to past peak. You want moderate, high, or peak color.
