But Belgium, a Western European nation and home to the European Union Parliament, was never likely to end up on the list. However, on July 23, 2026, the DOS upgraded its security warning to Level 2.

Inside the DOS’s upgraded security warning for Belgium
If you’re planning a trip to Antwerp, Brussels, or Bruges in the coming months—don’t worry. The US’s boosted warning revolves around petty, non-violent crime, meaning you can absolutely visit without putting yourself in danger.
But you might want to invest in an anti-theft bag. In its latest warning, the DOS writes, “Petty crime is common, especially in popular tourist locations. Stay aware of your surroundings. Most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, like purse snatching and pickpocketing.”
Aside from petty crime, the Department of State also recommends tourists watch out for two other factors. First, Belgium is going through a period of civil unrest that has led to protests—which are largely peaceful and cover many different areas, from education to police brutality. Try to avoid large crowds and demonstrations.
Second, drugs are illegal but commonly found in cities, including marijuana. Remember that it’s illegal—and you could get in trouble for possession.
Lastly, it’s worth pointing out that many other popular European countries have the same Level 2 travel advisory. As of August, 2026, the list includes France, Germany, Spain, the UK, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands.
