What makes Charleston one of the country’s most quietly enduring travel hubs?

It could be the many, many ghosts that grace Charleston’s cobbled streets. It could also be those cobbled streets, which define some of the US’s oldest and most historically impactful neighborhoods. Maybe it’s the seafood, the boutique shops, the historic houses, or the surprisingly large number of rooftop venues dotting the downtown area.
Regardless of what pulls you to Charleston, it’s likely to pull you back again someday.
While the city is home to many lovely hotels and inns, it also has quite a few charming little Airbnbs to book. I recommend booking Airbnbs in Charleston in the downtown area—they’ll keep you close to the most scenic streets and all the tourist action.
Here’s where to book.
Airbnbs in Charleston in or near the downtown area
Historic Battery Getaway

This two-story historic rental, built back in 1896, operated as an inn until 1900. Since then, the Historic Mevers Mansion has been carefully maintained and restored. This rental has two bedrooms and two bathrooms and is located right in the heart of Charleston. Despite the fact that the mansion has been around for 125 years, you’ll notice a perfect balance of modern amenities with Old World charm.
Deluxe Two-Bedroom Suite

Kings Street is where Charleston’s most popular shops and boutiques are located. This two-bedroom suite puts you just steps from King Street. If you like being right in the center of the action, that’s a hard-to-beat perk. Just know that you might hear a little noise pollution from the street. Additionally, this property is run by a management company—I usually avoid those types of rentals, but I’ll leave it up to you.
Charleston Carriage House

This new rental is a feast for the eyes. It’s also located near King Street, but is slightly more hidden away—meaning you shouldn’t hear too much noise. The unit has one bedroom and a queen sleeper sofa, along with a private covered porch that’s absolutely gorgeous. As with the other King Street rental (above), this rental is managed by a company, Town & Island Co.
1850s Charleston Treasure

Located in a building that was completed in 1853, this rental has been carefully and lovingly restored over the decades. The rooms are grand with high ceilings, while the covered porches are perfect for people-watching. This one-bedroom rental sleeps four. It’s been around for ten years, too, which is all the social proof I need to trust that the property is comfortable and has a great location.
Stylish Loft in Historic Downtown Charleston

This gorgeous loft is perfect for couples who want an intimate retreat. There’s plenty of room in the apartment, along with natural light. The loft has a massive California King-sized bed, too. When you’re ready for a little adventure, Charleston’s downtown delights are at your fingertips. Despite the great location, guests rave about how quiet the rental is.
Charming Cottage by Marion Square

Traveling with a group? This historic stay sleeps six guests in two bedrooms. The unit dates back to 1802, making it the oldest Airbnb in Charleston on this list. The full unit was renovated back in 2017, meaning you get modern amenities in a cozy, historic setting. There’s also enough room in the front courtyard to park two cars. Just know that you’re pretty close to King Street, meaning you might hear a little noise on busy nights.
Pineapple Place

Traveling with a group larger than six? Pineapple Place sleeps fourteen guests in four bedrooms and has seven bathrooms. (Perfect for wedding parties and bachelor celebrations!) There are enough beds to sleep twelve, plus a pull-out sofa. The unit is decked out with upscale appointments and has a light, airy design. Located in East Bay, you’re close to all the fun in the French Quarter.
