9 Taos Vacation Rentals Near The Ski Slopes

    William Stupp
    August 27, 2022

While no two ski resorts are the same, Taos Ski Valley is more special than most. Located about 20 miles northeast of Taos (a much-beloved town in its own right), the valley is host to a tiny village and fantastic ski area. The area (Taos is the name of the larger town but many people refer to the ski area simply as Taos as well) is a bizarre mix of cultures. This fact is no small part of the appeal. The aesthetic and culture of the Alps have been imported and thoroughly adopted by the area, but have since undergone a hybridization, taking on elements of the more local native and Hispanic cultures that make New Mexico so unique and appealing.

    Videos by TravelAwaits

The Taos ski area boasts steep terrain, high-quality snow, and small crowds. There are a large number of ski-in, ski-out accommodations and many more just a short walk from the base lifts. At over 9,000 feet above sea level, it does present some issues for people who live at sea level. But this also brings the area the light and fluffy snow which makes so many skiers smile. There are plenty of advanced and intermediate terrains, but the mountain is somewhat lacking in beginner areas. (People skiing for the first time won’t have a problem though; there are multiple lifts for first-timers.)

Visitors should also be advised that many properties are unreachable in winter without a car with four-wheel drive.

If you remain undaunted and eager to tackle this incredible mountain, here is a list of nine Vrbo vacation rentals to stay in while you explore Taos. Some are reachable from the mountain, others are a short drive away, and each promises an incredible ski getaway.

Comfy Cabin A Mile From The Mountain$650/nightly avg

When people imagine a ski vacation, the image of a cabin in the woods comes to mind for many. Most people, however, enjoy their ski trips from condos or hotels. But the picturesque cabins are still out there, including this cabin rental just a mile from the Taos ski lifts. The den is a cozy amalgam of rustic furniture and winter sports paraphernalia with a river-rock fireplace. There are two rooms with bunk beds while the master suite has a homespun queen made of rough wood, just the sort of thing you’d expect to see in a ski house.

The cabin was very nice and close to the valley. We did have an issue with the well that caused us to be without water for a while, but the owner was on top of getting it fixed quickly.
A great place for our Xmas holidays. Next to the ski slopes. Cool fireplace and everything you need if you like cooking. Thanks again for the welcome gift.
Minutes from slopes and owner is great. Very happy.
This was our first time In Taos and this cabin was perfect for our family. Other than then we left to ski, we stayed on the premises. The kids spent all of their time playing outside and playing games inside. The kitchen was fully stocked and the fireplace was easy to use. The owner was very helpful and gave us lots of great information about the area.
We had a wonderful time at the Cabin in the Woods. The owners were fantastic and very helpful with information especially with COVID restrictions and closures. The Cabin was in a great spot, close to Ski Valley. It was clean and well cared for, it was a great place to ring in the new year! Thank you Neal and family for sharing your home with us! Highly recommend!

    Kachina Ridge Dreams$408/nightly avg

There’s a large selection to enjoy during a ski trip to Taos. Guests staying at this unique house rental can add their accommodation to the list of wonders found in Taos Ski Valley. It’s quite the spectacle, with half the house sitting on stilts. Highlights include the flying sunroom and wood-burning fireplace in one of the two living areas. Best of all, the house is located in a quiet wood just a 5-minute’s walk from the Kachina chairlift. The Kachina base area is much quieter than the main one but gives guests the same access to the mountain. Staying here also means inevitable aprés ski trips to The Bavarian, a fabulous German bar and restaurant located at the base of the lift. Great for couples or a whole family of skiers, the home has a master king bedroom and a guest room with three twin beds.

The design of the home is amazing. The views of the mountains are amazing. The sound of the river below is great. The heated floors make everything cozy and warm. We watched wildlife frolic below in the mornings and evenings.
We LOVED this place. I have stayed in many rentals before and this was the most modern, most unique and cleanest by far. It actually looks as nice as the photos. The kitchen is lovely and brand new, the main bed is INCREDIBLE and rare to find a rental with such high quality linens, mattress and pillows. Not to mention the view from the bedroom window! From the dining room, we loved waving at the cars driving up to the trailhead / ski lift — everyone waved back because the architecture of the house is impossible to ignore. We walked to the Wheeler Peak trailhead for our hike in under 5 minutes. The only improvement recommendations would be to add a stereo system, hot tub and patio area. We wanted to be outside more to enjoy the stream and woods surrounding the property! We want to come back to Taos just to stay here again!
Let me start with saying this a very clean and wonderful residence. We did experience the beeping mentioned for the thermostat of the sunroom. It was 80 degrees at the time of our arrival. We opened the sliding glass doors and windows as instructed to cool the room. The room slowly cooled and the beeping persisted. The thermostat is locked, so trying to turn it off was not an option. We patiently waited as the temperature slowly lowered, but the beeping continued through the night. We assumed the temperature must be required to go below 70 to shut the alarm off. We went to bed early, since the alarm is in the living room. The management company was very responsive the next morning in turning it off( they did not have a key to the thermostat but pulled the locked cover off the wall). I would stay here again, but if beeping continues for more than a hour contact management immediately. Don’t let it damper your stay, like it did ours.
This home is a very unique, beautiful home way up the mountainside of Taos Ski Valley! I personally, had a hard time with the altitude (it’s right at 10,300’) so if you’re coming from a lower altitude area then you might consider this! I can imagine this would be a perfect location for ski season but it’s a bit out of the way for summer vacationing. It was still a wonderful place to stay and such a different kind of experience than most places!
This house exceeded our expectations-Was the perfect location on the mountain.Walking distance to lift 4 and the Bavarian restaurant And hiking /snowshoeing trails The soaker tub was wonderful Would definitely stay here again !So peaceful and remote but so close to the mountain

    Lorelai’s Black Diamond Lodge$995/nightly avg

Perhaps the grandest property in the valley, this spectacular lodge is a treat for any large group looking for a great stay in Taos this winter. The cavernous living room is an excellent place to relax after (and prepare for) a wonderful day on the mountain. For extra relief, the property has a massive hot tub and a steam shower in the master bathroom. The home has multiple game rooms with classic arcade games as well as modern consoles. The outdoor area is equipped with several heaters so you can enjoy meals al fresco while watching the sunset, even in the thick of winter. With two stories and seven bedrooms, there really is room for everyone, including your pets. Note that the home is about 2 miles from the ski area and anyone driving to the location should have four-wheel drive.

Ski Chalet Steps From The Slopes$1,047/nightly avg

This free-standing cabin in the village center is the very image of a ski chalet. It is a luxury log cabin complete with rustic leather sofas and walls of hewn lumber and rough stone. Each of the four bedrooms offers a cozy taste of mountain life and is furnished in the classical-alpine style. There’s a kids’ room with two bunk beds, a master king, and two queen rooms. As an added bonus, the property next door shares the same owners. Guests can make use of the Alpine Village’s amenities and services, which include massages, saunas, and more. The lifts of the main base area are just steps away from the front door.

A five-star experience, a beautiful cabin in a great location. The cabin had everything we needed. A special thanks to the folks who helped us check-in and gave us some great hiking maps for the area. A big thank you to all!
This property is really a unique place. If you need food, rentals, ski school, or just get on the lift, you can beat all of them within three minutes of walking. The place is stocked with a great amount of firewood and the stove will heat the whole house with no problem. The hot tub is perfect and located so you can look at the slopes while relaxing. We had six adults and three children in the house and had two beds to spare. Really a great place to spend a few days with friends and family!
We enjoyed our stay and this location was perfect for skiing and then taking a break. We were able to cook meals some and get food at the bear by restaurants. The hours for the restaurant’s were different and difficult during the evening. We got groceries at Albertsons in Taos before driving to Ski Valley. Thank you for a beautiful place to stay!
Wonderful log cabin at base of slopes! Warm and inviting with fireplace / stove to keep everyone nice and toasty! Very few rentals closer than this chalet!
Simply put, this house is great, and I’m not sure the pictures even do it justice. The location is perfect, and if you’re just skiing and staying in the ski valley, you likely won’t need your car. Secondly, we were worried about the size of the place and thought the pictures made it seem cramped. However, we were thrilled to find that while the bedrooms were a little tight, the living room and dining room were quite spacious and very comfortably fit our group. Lastly, we weren’t sure if the hot tub referenced in the listing was a private one or a community hot tub at the hotel. We were thrilled to find the hot tub right on the front deck of our place, for use only by our group. Thanks for a great stay – this house was perfect.

    Spalding Chalet$310/nightly avg

Spalding Chalet is a two-story mountain vacation home located about 2 miles from the lifts at Taos Ski Valley. It features an abundance of beautiful wood fixtures and comfortable, rustic furnishings. Each of the three queen bedrooms has sufficient space, as does the living area and kitchen. The Hondo Rio River — a tributary of the Rio Grande whose headwaters are found on the slopes of nearby Wheeler Peak — flows through the backyard. It is great for fishing in the summer and provides a pleasant ambiance all year-round.

The property we had reserved for spring break was triple booked to 3 groups. I was informed 6 days before our trip that we couldn’t stay there, but I was out of the country and couldn’t be reached. My wife was not allowed to make any decisions or changes to help the situation. The day before we were to rent the home, I spend 2 1/2 hours on the phone trying to figure out the situation. Eventually, the corporate resolutions team informed me everything was now O.K. and that we were ready to go. I had this confirmation by email and text. It was wrong. At 8:10 am the next morning, 50 minutes before we were leaving Colorado, we were told the reservation was off. There were no comparable homes in the same location, and at that point the only home left that was close could no longer be booked for that day. Apparently, you can’t book a rental the same day you want to stay there. We had to cancel our reservations at Taos Ski Valley because we had no place to stay. I don’t blame the homeowner for any of this, but VRBO screwed up big time, lied to us about the situation, then couldn’t provide the other home as a consolation. Needless to say, we were (and still are) furious! This is the 2nd time we have tried for a spring break trip in Taos and VRBO has messed it up twice. Thanks a lot!
We stayed a few nights at this property and used it for our base camp for a couple of days skiing at Taos Ski Valley. It is nice a close to the resort with out paying resort prices. We loved the river right off the back deck and the house layout. Fit out family of four with one adult friend very easily. The kitchen is stocked with everything needed to cook. I will stay here again if available.

If your family is full of fanatic skiers, you’ve doubtless fantasized about how great skiing home after a long day on the mountain must be. Here, guests can live out the dream in the coming winter season. The cabin is a 100-yard walk to the Pioneer beginner area. Even novice skiers will be able to ski home via the long green road which connects the Kachina and Resort Center areas. The home has queen and king bedrooms for the adults and two rooms with bunk beds for the children (or the adults who draw the short straws). Located as it is in a clearing surrounded by aspen and pine, guests will need reliable four-wheel-drive vehicles to access the property in the winter.

There were few dining options, VERY limited grocery shopping.
The place delivers as promised. Comfy, accommodating, well located for hiking and skiiing. Some bedrooms are small, but were OK. A great upstairs deck/veranda. Perfect for morning coffee or evening sunset viewing.
The cabin was very clean and nicely decorated and furnished. We had a wonderful vacation. Would definitely stay there again.
Property was clean, spacious & within walking distance to the ski slopes. Would definitely recommend for get togethers with family and/or friends!
The four bedroom two bath worked well for our group of 7. Two up two down both have shared bath. Wonderful wood stove in living room. One regret the deck was covered with ice and snow 2’ deep that we had to clear ourselves which at the price seemed strange given no recent snow.

We enjoyed gathering in this home with our family and dogs. It is 1.5 mi from the ski area so every day we drove up to ski. The drive way was plowed each time it snowed! Like all rental homes the knives and can opener are dull. And there are little things that are broken but we still felt very much at home.
We enjoyed our stay very much. The house was clean and very well stocked with everything we needed. The location is beautiful and we enjoyed the fire pit at night. It was everything you would want in a mountain house.
This property was great for our family of 4, and we could have brought more. There was alot of room. We enjoyed the comfy beds and hot tub the most. Thank you!
Great location close to the slopes. Kids had a blast sledding at the house. Very cozy and plenty of space for us.
This cabin was a great location for our ski vacation being very close to the base. Great space to walk the dogs at the back of the house. Plenty of beds for my family to stay. I would highly recommend.

The rental was good. The beds were comfortable. Everything was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. The lighting was inadequate for reading in the evening. The knives for cooking were unusable, had to use steak knives for cutting vegetables.
    Very clean, good location!
Place was a little funky but it served its purpose! Forest was a very pleasant man who took care of us. It is close to the lifts and once you figure out the ski back trail it’s even closer. Would stay again. Bring your own knives if you plan on doing extensive cooking.
