12 Tropical Kauai Vacation Rentals For Your Next Hawaiian Adventure

    Angela Busby
    July 24, 2022

For those who hold white-sand beaches and lush greenery close to their hearts, Kauai is calling your name! Colloquially known as the “Garden Isle,” this small but mighty Hawaiian island was naturally curated with the adventurer in mind, from mountains and rainforests to 90 miles of beautiful coastline. Inhabitants of the island are strong advocates for preserving Kauai’s essence, so only 3 percent of Kauai is developed — making the magnificent landscape an extraordinary destination for people who love to explore nature.

    Videos by TravelAwaits

With the largest share of white-sand beaches out of all of the Hawaiian Islands, there is tropical paradise at every turn. Hawaiian monk seals catch some rays on the southwestern side of the island at Nukumoi Point, Ke’e Beach is a popular snorkeling destination on the northwest shore of the island, and the family-friendly Kalapaki Bay features tranquil, protected waters near an eclectic coastal town on the eastern shore.

Hawaii’s oldest island has a rich culture full of unique music, cuisine, and history, and we have taken on the arduous task of hand-picking a variety of stunning accommodations for your stay. Review our selection listed in order of affordability, then get ready to experience the untouched beauty of the deep blue. Aloha!

    The Nene Nest$260/nightly avg

Just 152 steps from the ocean, this sugar plantation-style cottage is teeming with tropical energy and ready to be your little slice of paradise. The Nene Nest is located in Kekaha on the west — and sunniest — side of Kauai! The lavish garden lanai, complete with a private lawn area, is perfect for those early risers looking to feel the gentle Hawaiian breeze with a cup of coffee in hand. Step inside French doors from the lanai to the thoughtfully designed, airy interior with 9-and-a-half-foot ceilings, giant windows, and original crown molding! Curate your favorite dishes or give a local recipe a try in the fully-equipped kitchen, featuring stainless steel appliances and a tasteful backsplash. The Nene Nest’s neutral, earthy decor is sprinkled with beachy floral accents, light oak finishes, and tropical ceiling fans for seeking solace after the sunshine.

Kekaha is considered a true Hawaiian town out of the way of tourists and a splendid location to immerse yourself in the culture of Kauai. Hear grocery-store conversations in the native Hawaiian language, plan to stop for lunch at the Lodge at Kokee, or experience hiking at the exhilarating Waimea Canyon.

It was absolutely charming and magical! We loved the beautiful decor, spacious rooms, and amenities. The beautiful yard was icing on the cake! Thanks for everything! We loved it!
The Nene Nest, built in the 1950s, is such a perfect place to stay on the south shore of Kauai. The yellow and green tiled kitchen, hardwood floors and covered front porch are just a few of the appealing aspects of this cottage. Nene Nest is in a quiet neighborhood, just two houses from the ocean, though it takes a little boulder walking to get down to the small strip of sand. Nene Nest is in a quiet neighborhood (except for the roosters) with a large yard with a gas grill. There are plenty of pots and pans and utensils for preparing meals at the cottage. The location of Nene Nest is at the gateway to the road going up to Waimea Canyon which makes the trip much easier than it would be if you were staying in Poipu. The Canyon is well worth a visit, unless the weather prediction is for clouds obscuring the view.I would highly recommend a stay at Nene Nest.
What a wonderful home! Comfy bed, spacious kitchen, lovely porch — everything was perfect. A terrific home base for our travels around the island. Can’t wait to return.
This property was very close and convenient to most of the major events of my class reunion. We felt secure at the home and was grateful that we had access to wifi and AC. We really appreciated the prompt response to all of our emails and questions. Although we did not need to communicate with the Property Manager during our stay, we appreciated that we had a local manager that we could contact.
The house is set back from the road, so super private and quiet. Located right next to the ocean, with a beach full of the prettiest seashells. The Hawaiian themed furniture in the main room was gorgeous and comfy. There is AC in both bedrooms, which was amazing (and just a few minutes running it instantly cooled the rooms to the perfect temperature). The kitchen was fully stocked with everything you could potentially need, and included an adorable welcome basket. Both the outdoor shower and indoor showers were great. There was a closet full of supplies and all sorts of beach chairs/boards/coolers were available to use. The lanai had an outdoor table and the yards were full of Hawaiian blooms and birds. The location was great for the areas we really wanted to visit on this trip, including Polihale and the Kalalau Valley. Honestly, this is one of the best homes I have ever rented. The beds were ridiculously comfy, the aesthetic was lovely, and you could tell so much love was poured into every single detail. Would highly recommend everyone stay here! Host was beyond incredible.

    Clean and updated.
Really enjoyed this location in a group of cute condos close that surrounded a green courtyard. Was very close to Hanale and enjoyed our boat ride to see the Nepali Coast from there and enjoyed one of the many good restaurants. Book your access to the beaches to thr north as these are limited for non-residents. Passes open thirty days before. We were unable to get to some of the great snorkeling and hiking in because we did not. The condo was adorable and had a very tiki beach vibe. Art was very nice – beds and furniture was comfortable. Host welcome gifts were much appreciated and kitchen was fantastic. I was ill and spent a couple of fantastic days enjoying the breeze through the living room, while family was out. Great movement of air throughout the condo. Electricity went out across the island and fans were off for several hours – no one got uncomfortable during that time – that’s saying a lot.
Wonderful location and close to everything! Unit is well equipped and gives you that great Hawaii vibe. Would stay there again. Loved it!
This place was lovely. We enjoyed walking down to the beach from the nearby access. Great place to stay and explore the north shore of Kauai.
This 1 bedroom (downstairs) house with a master suite in the loft was an amazing place to stay. The kitchen is beautiful and there is a washer/dryer. There are two great bathrooms. There is not air conditioning, but the house is cool because there are plenty of ceiling fans and the wind blows through the windows. We would definitely stay again.

This was the perfect spot for two people. It had everything we needed. A few things have changed from the photos. The beach chairs are now camp chairs and the bikes are single speed, back break cruisers. There also is no air conditioning but lots of fans. You are located right across the street from the Kola Landing Resort, which is beautiful to walk through on your way to the beach. We got a couples massage their and then had access to the pool and other amenities for the whole day. It was so nice to have a isolated place to stay that was quiet and private. Everything was nicely remodeled and very clean. They even had some Tupperware to store leftovers from cooking. Would definitely stay here again!
Simple, quiet, well equipped, clean, and charming! Love the outdoor shower and the little nook on the side of the house to have coffee/breakfast!
We had the BEST time staying here. The house was so clean, in the perfect location (close to literally everything!), and all the extras were amazing to have, ex: bikes, beach chairs, umbrella & cooler. We will definitely be returning!
The cottage was in a great location and was super clean, comfortable, and well stocked. The mattress was super comfortable and I really enjoyed coming back to this spot after long days of exploring. I would recommend this spot for sure! Only minor comment – this isn’t air conditioned and it can get a bit warm inside!
Loved our stay at this property. The hosts were very responsive and we had everything we needed. It’s also a short walk to a few restaurants, coffee shops, etc, which was nice. Would definitely stay here again!

it’s well equipped and everything is clean and well-kept. Bed and sofa are comfortable.
Really quaint, fresh decor and paint, easy to follow instructions, located in local Waimea neighborhood–feel like a local. Would stay again!
We absolutely loved our stay! Both bedrooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you could need. We loved the outdoor shower as well! I would highly recommend staying here and would love to stay again.
Clean, well appointed cottage across the street from the beach in Waimea. Non touristy, local feeling neighborhood. Loved the outdoor tub and the clean, cozy cottage. Great option for anyone wanting to stay on the west side.
The cottage was perfect! We walked to the black sand beach each morning and then again in the evening for sunset. The backyard and lanai were amazing – we spent lots of time out there. The outdoor shower was a huge bonus (we never even used the indoor shower). The location was beautiful and an easy drive to Poipu and other popular places (which were all detailed in the guest book at the cottage). The grocery store and restaurants were a very short walk away and had everything we needed. I will definitely stay here the next time I travel to Kauai and I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing place to stay!

We so enjoyed our time at this lovely home. The proximity to Hanalei, nearby beaches, and views for sunset every night could not be beat. Thank you for such a memorable family trip Wendy!
This is honestly one of the nicest rental properties I have stayed in, and I’ve traveled all over the world. The pictures truly don’t do justice to the property, much less the surrounding views of the ocean and the mountains. The property is like-new, and is stocked with everything you could possibly need. We would stay here again in a heartbeat! Thanks for such a wonderful property!
Looked forward to seeing the crowd gather for a shared sunset at the western overlook.
This property can’t be beat!! I woke up every morning and enjoyed my coffee on the lanai. I didn’t know which way to look or which view I enjoyed more: Stunning mountains to the left, ocean to the right, rainbows straight ahead. A sunset overlook spot sits directly across the property too and never disappoints. The cleanliness of this property was wonderful. Not a speck of dust was found. The home could get a little warm in the afternoons but it is well equipped with fans and a good amount of breeze. It’s less than a 10 min drive to hanalei bay. Beach access was a bit tricky but easily accessible by 150 stairs through the new construction site of new hotel being built. Can’t say enough good things about this property and host!
Great stay… we are well traveled and really appreciated the amenities and thoughtful touches throughout the villa. Ample beach gear, cooking utensils, & toiletries. We ate every single home cooked meal on the balcony with a great view. The popular public lookout point is literally a 30 second walk for a quick change of scenery. Favorite beaches- Puu Poa- fairly secluded, great snorkeling, & swam with too many turtles to count. Hanalei- great mountain views with solid body boarding. Also a good spot to learn to surf. Tunnels- More great views and snorkeling option. Get there early as parking is very limited. We had to walk a bit from Haena Beach Park. Other recommendations- make reservations for the Kalalau Trail on the Nā Pali Coast (spotted numerous whales from the distance), & book a private helicopter tour with the doors off. Do your grocery shopping at Big Save in Hanalei and explore the food truck scene. This property is rated 5 stars for a reason, so book early before it’s too late.

This house was amazing. Very clean and the pool was so much fun!
    Super awesome, quiet, beautiful
We LOVED this house! It’s in a beautiful, more private area and was just a quick drive down to the beach. Lydgate Park nearby was amazing!! The pool is a little smaller than we realized but it was great for the kids to splash around in. If we ever go back to Hawaii this is definitely where we will stay again. The hosts were fantastic and very responsive. Thank you for helping make our trip awesome!
I LOVED this place! So peaceful and calm, felt so remote and yet only 10 minutes from Kapa’a. And the checkin was a breeze. I’d love to stay here again.
This was a very nice property and exactly as advertised. Neighborhood was out of the city proper but convenient to everything. Plunge pool was cold but a nice addition. Screened porch was fantastic.. However, window sills were not cleaned and, more significantly, three of the pillows had mold on them. Yes, Kauai is very damp, but this certainly should have been noted in the cleaning process and the pillows replaced. Maybe understandable for a budget hotel, but at the price charged, greater care and oversight should have been exercised.

The location is amazing with beach access literally right across the street. My family had a great time on our beach adventure and this little house was the perfect place to rest and recharge and cook up some costco meals!
This is a secluded house with a beautiful backyard and great beach access.
The location is five stars. The house is 1 or 2 stars. Here’s a list of things I wish we had known before booking. The house is perpetually damp – literally damp. I understand it’s tropical but very challenging to have damp sheets, floors and toilet paper. Zoom in closely on the windows and you’ll see louvers – these don’t fully close. Even though there are screens, the gnats, noise, moisture and lizards are a problem. We don’t mind the 2” anoles (after all, it’s tropical) but killed a few ants in clothing and relocated 6” geckos every day. Downstairs bathroom is a big collection since it’s open to the outside. The sofa bed was so painful that we put the mattress on the floor. The carpet and couches are stained, all of the cabinetry is so old that the doors don’t close and there are dead gnats everywhere. Even at a normal volume, we heard all of our neighbor’s conversations. We booked for four nights and after the first night I tried to reach vacasa with no response. It wasn’t so bad that I wanted to pay for a second vacation spot, but it is by far the most misrepresented vacation rental we have ever booked. I read the one bad review and discounted the issues. In hindsight, I think they were very generous in their review. If you are just booking for the beach and looking only for a place to crash, the location is excellent. If you are looking for a cozy cottage, to play games or cook and hang out as part of your vacation, keep looking.

So close to the beach. Very short walk to a great beach. The house was well equipped unless you needed spoons. The second bedroom is a pretty limited space, but it works. Nice layout for privacy and the grounds are great.

Nice property with a Hawaii vibe and a great outdoor space. This is a beautiful location with beach access footsteps away. We had beach chairs, an umbrella and 4 beach towels provided. We cooked almost all our meals at the property. The kitchen was stocked with enough basic items to get by (fridge, stove, coffee maker, toaster over and basic kitchen pans and dishes. The charcoal BBQ was also nice to have. If you plan on cooking much I would recommend stopping at Costco near the airport due to food costs being high at stores close by. You also need to bring refillable water bottles because none of the local stores sell cases of water. The beds where comfortable and so was the living room couch. The drive in is full of one lane bridges and it does take a while to drive around. If you are coming to relax this is a great location to stay. If you plan on doing lots of excursions and driving around the island this may not be the best location for you. For a long trip with lots of cooking I would recommend picking up a big nonstick frying pan and some extra paper towels and toilet paper. We did rent bikes but ended up feeling the main road was busier than we felt safe riding on, so we didn’t use them. Overall we where very happy with the house and the local beach.
The property owner was very easy to communicate with, and the property itself was well represented. We are a family of 5 (with a 12, 15 and 17 year old) and stayed in this Bungalow for 6 nights. The location was perfect. It’s minutes from Tunnels beach, a 15 minute drive to Hanalei Bay or a short walk to a very private beach that is absolutely gorgeous. Upon arriving, there were beach chairs, coolers and beach umbrellas lined up along the side of the house. We used them everyday and were grateful to have them! Ha’ena is a beautiful community and one of the prettiest places I’ve ever visited. So happy to have had such a comfortable stay.
I need to go look at the listing description, but I don’t remember it saying this lovely property was so hot from 10am to sunset. The house is not insulated and has sky lights throughout. In the afternoon, the heat was stifling. Maybe some covers for the skylights or swamp coolers. The back bedroom was comfortable becuz it’s hidden under foliage and the back deck was cool. If you’re young and active and out having fun during the day, no problem. Other than the heat, it’s a great property. 2 min walk to the beach and lots of swimming spots up north. Hanalei and P’ville were 15 min down the road for dinners. Plan to fix your own breakfasts and bring coffee unless you want to drive early in the morning. Clean, quiet, beautiful property.
We loved staying at Acacia and Keith’s beach bungalow. It felt like a true getaway nestled amongst some of the most stunning landscape in Kauai. The location was great, close to Haena state park and some very beautiful local beaches. The house was well equipped and had everything we needed for our trip. I’d definitely prefer a stay here over a resort. We’d love to come back.
The house is so interesting and unique! The location is great for exploring the north and east side of the island. Being within just a few minutes walk to a beach was a huge bonus! The house and backyard are very private and quiet. It is an open air property so there is no AC – the master bedroom and dining area stay surprising cool during the day and are quite comfortable at night! The other two bedrooms as well as living room got quite warm during the day; however temperatures were higher than normal during our stay (upper 80’s every day) and they have several portable fans to help move air around the house. The kitchen was large but the knives were very old and beat up. The beach equipment was also not in good shape and several pieces were on their last legs. We were surprised by the geckos that make their way into the house but learned to love them and find them funny! Overall it was a lovely stay and we were sad to leave!

I stayed here for 3 nights with my wife and another couple and we had a great time. I had fallen in love with Hanalei on a previous trip and this was one of the few places I could find withing walking distance of town. Although not on the ocean and relatively quaint, the property was right on the river and provided everything we needed. Definitely a good option when looking for a 2 bedroom place in town!
A wonderful place to stay for a couple or small family. You cannot beat the location. Your own bungalow on stilts overlooking the river and is Hanalei town adjacent. The best beaches in Kauai are merely minutes away. The company sets this place up perfectly for your stay. Clean, quiet, and well appointed.
Renting this unit I had a couple concerns before we arrived. One that the unit did not have AC and second if the unit would be big enough for two couples. Both my concerns turned out to not be an issue. There was a breeze that kept the unit at a very comfortable temperature and the space turned out to not be an issue. I highly recommend this rental – was the perfect vacation.
Create location on the river with mountain views. Very close to many beaches and services as well as Hanena Park. Bedrooms small. Good amenities. Nice touch is day bed with river views.
Love this place! Quiet, private, clean house. Amazing views all the way around! Walk to Hanalei very easy. Nice management with great communication. Very friendly!! Didn’t want to leave. We got married and it was a perfect honeymoon spot! Thank You again!

Beautiful cottage. Perfect in every way. Highly recommend Sea Glass Cottage.
Everything was beautiful and such good quality. Kitchen was very well appointed and beach chairs, wagon and umbrella was very much appreciated.
This property is a stand out in Kaua’i! The home is beautiful and has everything you need. With two masters, an outdoor shower and well thought out seating indoors and out, it’s perfect for two couples. The home is walking distance to Poipu beach and is a great location on the island. I definitely recommend Sea Glass Cottage!!
Two couples traveled for the first time to Hawaii. We stayed on 3 Islands total during our stay and this property was amazing. It has us wanting to come back to Poipu on our next vacation. The house has everything you need except for AC but we managed for the 3 nights we stayed. The sliding glass wall was an amazing touch and walk out showers had us in awe. The location was perfect and hosts were extremely easy to communicate with. Thank you for sharing your home.
Beautiful place, great location close to Poipu Beach. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The property was in a great location, close to beaches and town for supplies. Everything was very good except for a few small things that we noticed. A significant number of the electrical outlets were not working so it made recharging our devices challenging. There was no broom and the vacuum isn’t the greatest so there were challenges keeping the floor clean. Last, the tubs had giant hair clogs, causing 6 inches of water to accumulate druing showers. We tried to clean them out but suggest some kind of drain trap to prevent this in the future.Overall it was a very nice place to stay and we would certainly return.
Beautiful home with everything that you need and just a short walk to tunnels beach. Dream vacation come true.
My husband and I stayed at Hallor Hale with our 20-something daughter, son and future daughter-in-law and it was fabulous. We had plenty of room to spread out and the beach was a 5-10 minute walk down the road (you could also drive down and park if you had a lot of beach gear); the entrance is a little hidden, so don’t be afraid to go down some of those alleyways that aren’t marked “private” to see if there’s an entrance. The house has a beautiful outdoor deck for drinking your coffee and watching the sun come up over the mountains. It was well equipped in the kitchen and bathroom, everything was clean and inviting, and our local property manager was very responsive when we had questions. Our view was fantastic with the mountains in the background and lots of exotic birds singing to us in the mornings. We went in mid-March, and even with spring break, our beach was quiet. The house has a lot of equipment for the beach too (chairs, bucket and shovels, snorkeling equipment, boogie board, coolers, umbrellas, noodles, etc.) — definitely take advantage of the snorkeling equipment because the snorkeling at Tunnels Beach was amazing. We saw lots of beautiful fish and rock formations. I wouldn’t recommend renting bikes to keep at the house as there are no nearby bike paths and the roadway is very narrow with lots of sharp curves that you can’t see around. The nearest town is Hanalei, about a 15 minute drive from our house. There was a small grocery store there with most of the basics, but if you wanted a grocery store with a greater variety, you need to drive to Princeville, which is about 25-30 minutes away. Also lots of good restaurants and cute shops in Hanalei, as well as an outstanding kayaking/paddleboard business where you could paddle up or down the river toward the ocean or into a wildlife refuge. Absolutely fabulous and even a beginner can do it.Be aware that this house is located on the far northern side of the island and even though the distance from the airport to the house isn’t far in miles, it takes an hour and a half to get there from Lihue, because of the winding, narrow coastal roads (with beautiful views) you take, so you’ll definitely want to rent a car. This is what made it so tranquil though. We were close to Hanalei, which is touristy, but we felt more like locals because we were in a somewhat “rural” area, close to Haena State Park. Loved every minute of it and were sad to leave.
The property manager was very helpful, with great communication from start to finish. I would stay here again and recommend to friends without hesitation. Bed in master bedroom is super-soft (only bed we used), pressure and heat in the shower is good, and the kitchen is organized well. We loved the peaceful location close to the beach and away from the crowds.
We loved the house and how remote it was. We enjoyed Tunnels Beach which was a short walk from the house and how close it was to the Na Pali Coast. We enjoyed the restaurants in Hanalei. It was a fantastic place to spend a week and relax.

Rating Details:The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless.I was very happy with the location.I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental.Overall, I recommend this vacation rental.Reviewer Comments:This was one of the most beautiful locations on the island! We felt like we were living a dream for 15 amazing days. Location, Location, Location! An Amazing view from any room, window in the house! Anyone lucky enough to stay at this home won’t be disappointed. We had my 88 yr old mother with my husband and my daughter and our grandson. And my brother and his girlfriend joined us from Maui for a week and they loved it!!! My mother loved just sitting on the top deck in the corner with the breeze and read a couple books on that trip! She loved it. She also went snorkeling at Anini Beach and tubing down the canal through Kauai back country…. Everyone thanked me for picking such a great house! Thank you Kauai Vacation Rentals for all your service and kindness. Many Mahalo’s and Aloha.
    Perfect location and beautiful views!
This house is by far the best place we have ever stayed in! When we arrived we could not believe the location. It is right on the water and the views were breathtaking. We snorkeled every day in the cove right in front of the house and we saw so many incredible fish. The small cove was surrounded by rocks and felt like a large private saltwater pool filled with tropical fish. Our son went out of the cove and spearfished, he had a great time and caught some incredibly large fish. We will definitely stay here again next time we visit Kauai!
Rating Details:The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless.I was more than happy with the location.I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental.Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental.Reviewer Comments:The house is delightful, the views are amazing, the access to the ocean was perfect. The draw back is the locals on Friday and Saturday night. As a guest to the house we are asked to respect the locals. It is very hard to when they are parting until 3 in the morning and then leaving their mess on the beach and the houses lawn area. Someone even took a trash can. During the week it was quiet but watch out for the weekend.
The location is perfect for exploring all around the island. Photos of this house and grounds are ok… In reality, the views are indescribably beautiful and change by the hour. Inside, the furniture looks and feels much better than in photos. The couch is super wide and perfect for cuddling. Local art is throughout the home. Honestly, I searched elsewhere bc of past reviews about “locals” on the public beach next door. Please don’t let that beach dissuade you! In a week, we saw maybe 2 people per day, and they were so nice and quiet. If they’re not nice, perhaps it’s bc we can ruin what they have…. Enjoy this beauty, while anyone can.
