Strasbourg isn’t the first place that Americans usually explore in France and Germany—but it’s often one of the most memorable.
Videos by TravelAwaits
Strasbourg is in the Alsace region of northeastern France, which shares culture and history with its German neighbors. Its Gothic architecture is world-famous, plucked straight from a fairy tale, and offers a dramatic backdrop for its annual Christmas holiday markets. Not only is it one of the most picturesque, but it’s also one of the oldest on the continent.
You’ll also find distinctive Alsatian culinary traditions, wine preferences, and a range of dishes that feel equally French and German. While many visitors pass through on a day trip or on their way into Germany from Paris, I recommend staying a day or two in Strasbourg. Its Old Town (called Grande Ile) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It’s too scenic to pass up, and too full of hidden gems to not give proper attention. While the best time to visit is during the cozy, lovely winter holiday season to see the Christkindelsmärik (that’s the Christmas market), it’s a memorable destination any time of year.
If you want to really lean into the Strasbourg experience, book one of these storybook Airbnbs in Strasbourg. They’re centrally located in the Old Town (or near it) and photoworthy, giving you a front-row seat in one of Europe’s most magical cities. Just make sure to check rental listings for information on elevators—not all historic buildings have them.

Storybook Airbnbs in Strasbourg, France
Apt Facing the Cathedral

The name says it all. This small one-bedroom offers stunning views of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, the most commanding sight in the city’s Old Town. You’ll enjoy unspoiled views straight from the living room. Just keep in mind that this is a small stay that dates back to the 16th century and is also listed as a historic monument. As such, the ceilings are low, and the square footage is limited. But if you enjoy historic stays full of charm, this is the perfect ‘Alsatian cocoon’, as the rental description says.
Duplex Facing the Cathedral

This duplex is similar to the last. You’ve got cathedral views that will draw you to the windows. There’s also a little added space between the downstairs living area and the upstairs sleeping loft. The home also has more natural light. Despite the slight upgrades, this is a 15th-century home that was originally built over six hundred years ago. It doesn’t get any more charming than that.
Le4 Au Coeur

This one-bedroom is located outside of Old Town, but within walking distance, giving you a little reprieve from the hustle. Still, you won’t sacrifice storybook décor or history. The unit dates back to the 1500s, which you’ll feel in the exposed wood and stone. However, compared to the last two rentals, this unit has more modern additions, including a kitchenette and a cozy fireplace-adjacent heater.
Exceptional Downtown Apartment

As you’ve noticed, many charming Airbnbs in Strasbourg are short on space due to their historic origins. But this more modern unit delivers on both space and charm. There are three bedrooms that will comfortably sleep six guests—no pullout couches. The living area has gorgeous windows that overlook the Old Town. It’s the perfect spot to stay if you’re after Christmas markets, as you can walk to them in a few minutes or just enjoy the lights from the windows.
The Shadow of the Cathedral

If you enjoy classic and cozy ambiance, this two-bedroom will surprise you with its warmth. The home has plenty of antiques, along with candle-style lighting that maximizes historic charm. As a perk, the only deviation is the kitchen—it’s been renovated with modern features for easy cooking, coffee, and tea. Lastly, with seven years of experience, the host (Thierry) is more than able to help visitors get in, get set up, and start enjoying Strasbourg.
Charming Apartment

This small-but-lovely apartment is located in the pedestrian streets of Old Town, a short distance from the Cathedral where the Christmas markets come alive. The unit dates back to the 1400s, letting you enjoy a truly historic stay. However, the interior has contemporary décor with fewer antiques compared to the first two Airbnbs on this list. If you aren’t all-in on the vintage feel, this is a happy medium. It’s also a two-bedroom, letting you travel comfortably with a small group.
Cathedral Square

With this two-bedroom unit, you don’t need to sacrifice space to get history. The unit dates back to 1567 and is double the size of previous rentals, at 120 square meters. Windows line the living space, making it feel even larger thanks to plenty of natural light. There’s a nice mix of historic features with modern furniture, giving you a comfortable stay with a few lovely perks, like the stained-glass style windows in one of the bedrooms.
The Galerie des Vosges

If the Airbnbs in Strasbourg’s Old Town are booked up, look a little further from the main hub. This two-bedroom is located in a quiet but colorful neighborhood that’s a ten-minute walk from the cathedral. There’s even a parking garage nearby where you can leave your rental for a reasonable fee of around $25 per day. Just know that the ‘charm factor’ here is much more modern than the others.
