Nestled in the lovely Adirondacks of New York, Lake Placid is one of the country’s most famous lakes.

You might have heard of Lake Placid thanks to its role as a Winter Olympics host city back in 1980. It was the first winter Olympic Games to take place outside Europe, and put the location on the map for millions of Americans—and even more around the world.
It’s also been dubbed the ‘birthplace of the American vacation’. That’s because the term ‘vacation’ was first used in Lake Placid. Similar to Georgia’s Jekyll Island, Lake Placid was a preferred stop for wealthy families like the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers in the late 1800s.
The families vacated their homes in New York City to flock to the countryside each year, helping coin the term vacation. (Up until then, most Americans used the British term ‘holiday’.)
Still, despite its history and enshrinement as a Winter Olympics host, Lake Placid still has a cozy, small-town feel. Back in 2020, the population was listed at around 2,500. It’s an idyllic spot to call home while you enjoy the lake, the mountains, and the miles of hiking trails.
Here’s where to stay while you do.
Note: Mirror Lake is a smaller lake that sits between Lake Placid and the community that takes its name. If you see ‘lake views’ listed in rentals in Lake Placid, they’re (probably) talking about Mirror Lake.
Airbnbs in Lake Placid
Apartment with Mirror Lake access

This two-bedroom apartment offers lakeside serenity thanks to its views of Mirror Lake. The open floor-plan living room and kitchen include a furnished balcony where you can enjoy views of Mirror Lake. The full bathroom also has a large standalone tub that looks perfect for post-ski soaks.
But the real star of the show is the backyard. You have access to a scenic backyard that opens directly onto Mirror Lake. If that’s not enough, the unit is also located on Main Street, letting you walk to some of Lake Placid’s top spots.
Ski-Out Snow Escape

The same host as the unit above also runs a ski-out escape. I’m not sure if these two rentals are located on the same property, but you can expect a similar experience. This rental is arranged like a studio and is located on the ground level of the building. That gives you direct access to the lake year-round. In summer, you can kayak, paddleboard, or swim. In winter, you can even use the ground-level unit as a ski-out location.
Apartment with views of Whiteface Mountain

Looking for both lake views and mountain views? This one-bedroom apartment has it all. You can see Whiteface Mountain from the right angle, along with Mirror Lake. There’s a sofa bed in the living room, in case you want to invite a third guest with you. Aside from a lovely and light design, the bathroom has a claw-foot bathtub that comes with soaking salts. That’s a pretty unbeatable combo.
Condo on Mirror Lake

With views and direct access to Mirror Lake, this two-bedroom is ideal for anyone who wants to maximize their time on the water. The second bedroom has two twin beds, making this perfect for small families. As a perk, there’s a private deck with a gas grill for you to whip up your own meals. But know that this unit is located right on Main Street, meaning you have major bars, restaurants, and shops just a short walk away.
Custom Home Near Main St.

Want to feel like you’re on an Alpine retreat? This custom-made home will transport you to a refined Alpine cabin with its warm wood features. There are four bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, a wood-burning stove, and a fireplace. Though you’re only a few blocks from Main Street, the rental feels secluded thanks to its forested coverage. Yes, there’s a fire pit out back to enjoy, too.
Cozy Apartment with Views

This apartment offers a wonderful balance thanks to its historic features and modern amenities. For example, there’s a claw-foot tub and original wood flooring, along with features like fast wi-fi and dimmable lights. You’re just a short ten-minute walk to Main Street. Just know that this isn’t a suitable rental for young children due to the furniture; some have sharp edges.
High-design Apartment with Lux Tub

If you want to feel like you’re staying in a design magazine, this designer-built luxury rental should do the trick. Great atmosphere aside, the unit has a private deck with views, a soaking tub, and a fireplace, making it ideal for a wellness escape. It’s also preferred by couples thanks to the comfortable bed and soaking tub. You can walk to Main Street, too, meaning you can hang up those car keys for a few days, if you want.
Home With Room for Six

You won’t find too many large-group-friendly rentals in Lake Placid. This home has room for six and is perfect for families. There are two bedrooms, one of which has two sets of bunk beds. It’s located on the main road that leads into Lake Placid, but is usually quiet, and has a small convenience store right across the street.
1920s Studio Cottage

This studio cottage dates back to the 1920s, giving you a historic stay with a charming feel. The studio is small but perfect for couples, and comes with a full kitchen. Outside, there are ADK chairs and loungers. Inside, you’ll find treats like a heated king-sized bed. You can walk to town in just ten minutes or take a quick two-minute car ride. The cottage also comes with a small fenced-in yard—you can also bring along your pup for $25 per night.
