HomeToGo has ideas for you. HomeToGo, a vacation rental site that primarily focuses on European markets, dove deep into over 380 US locations to determine which awesome spots can be reached from large cities on a single tank of gas.
The study is part of HomeToGo’s newly launched Tank Travel Index. The goal of the index is to empower road-trippers to uncover the roads lesser traveled. It’s a great way to save money while still getting that travel rush, especially during ongoing fuel concerns. In fact, the study found that the median nightly price per person for its destinations is $93.30.
I highly recommend diving into the full study, which lists out all 385 one-tank destinations. I’ve rounded up some of my favorites below, along with a few factoids that will help you get started finding the perfect one-tank destination.
Inside the Tank Travel Index from HomeToGo: top spots + tips for destination-hunting
If you’re going to look for destinations that you can reach on your own, here’s what you need to know. First, Texas and California both have the highest number of one-tank destinations with 22 locations each. Second, Boston has 15 one-tank destinations accessible, making it the city with the most spots.
Lastly, HomeToGo created a handy interactive map where you can see one-tank destinations across the country. If you’re a visual planner, it’s an intuitive, easy-to-use tool. If not, you can look for specific cities in the list rankings via the search bar. Just type in the city you want to leave from, and you’ll see a list of results.
Here are the one-tank destinations that I’m keeping on my radar this summer:
- Hot Springs, Arkansas via Little Rock
- Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin via Madison
- Chincoteague Island, Virginia via Virginia Beach
- Crystal River, Florida via St. Petersburg-Tampa
- Keuka Lake, New York via Syracuse
- Beaufort, South Carolina via Charleston
- Rockport, Maine via Portland
- Fernandina Beach, Florida via Jacksonville
