It’s hard to top Mackinac Island when it comes to pure Americana fare.

Americana is a buzzword that encapsulates American history, folklore, and culture. From music to food to those classic 4th of July fireworks, it’s often at the heart of what Americans seek out when we travel domestically, especially during the summer season.
Mackinac nails the Americana ambiance in multiple ways. It’s got Victorian architecture, car-free streets, and classic treats like fudge. The Grand Hotel, the island’s most iconic building, gives visitors a peek into classic American vacations from the eras of yore. (You can still drink tea on its massive covered porch, too.)
Speaking of yore, Mackinac Island is also home to Fort Mackinac, dating back to the American Revolution, and unique events like vintage baseball games.
Unsurprisingly, it’s also a hotspot for Fourth of July celebrations. Each year, thousands gather to celebrate the holiday with a 38-gun salute and a reading of the Declaration of Independence. In fact, America250, the organization created by Congress to help launch celebrations nationwide, has outlined special programs for the island.
In short, there’s no better place to celebrate the Fourth of July for America’s 250th this year. If you’re looking for iconic spots to ring in the anniversary, here are the Mackinac Island 4th of July events you need to know about. Remember: July 4th, 2026, falls on a Saturday—meaning you’ve got a whole weekend-long list of events to enjoy.

Mackinac Island 4th of July events you can’t miss—in chronological order
(May – October) Echoes of the Island: A Journey Through Time exhibit
Head to The Richard & Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum to take in a curated exploration of Fort Mackinac. The exhibition covers the many layers of the island’s past, starting with its original Anishinaabe inhabitants. You’ll get to enjoy pieces created with all types of media as you learn about the island’s history through the lens of art.
(June – October) Shoot a historic canon or gun
America250 is rolling out unique programs that let you shoot off one of Mackinac Island’s canons or old-fashioned guns. You can fire Michilimackinac’s Canon, all four types of canons and guns at Colonial Michilimackinac, or even fire off Fort Mackinac’s massive cannon.
(July 2-6) Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration at the Grand Hotel
You can book a four-night stay at Mackinac’s iconic Grand Hotel via their Old-Fashioned Fourth of July package. It includes a stay for two adults and one child, along with dining and all holiday festivities hosted by the hotel. Check out the details of what comes with a stay—and book quickly, because rooms are bound to fill up.
(July 2) ‘Built Because of the Revolution’ after-hours tour at Fort Mackinac
Fort Mackinac has a long and complex history, first as a British territory and then as an American holdout during the Revolutionary War. This special tour (which starts at 7 pm) lets you explore the historic fort with a historian in the lead. This historian will dive deep into the fort’s history, starting way back in 1780. The program is free and leaves from North Sally Port.
(If you enjoy this historical angle, there’s another similar tour that takes place at 7 pm the day before, July 1. This tour explores Fort Michilimackinac, once an outpost in the British and French.)
(July 3) ‘Fire at Night’ canon firing and rifle firing at Fort Michilimackinac
Gear up for a fiery display at Fort Michilimackinac for the Fire at Night event. It runs from 9 pm until 10:30 pm, and includes canon firing. But these are actual historic canons, meaning you’re in store for plenty of noise and fire. Earlier in the afternoon, there will also be rifle firings, in case you want to arrive early for more action.
(July 4) ‘Star Spangled Fourth of July’ at Fort Mackinac
See Fort Mackinac decked out with Americana fare for the big day. The event starts at 3 pm and includes all those beloved Mackinac Island 4th of July traditions. That includes a re-reading of the Declaration of Independence, a 38-gun salute, a canon salute, and plenty of music and games.
(July 4) Dual fireworks display
At dusk, fireworks are set off from two separate locations off Mackinac Island (from barges). One is launched from the east side of the island, the other from the west. That’s good news because the crowds are split, meaning you’re guaranteed a front-row seat to the action, even if there are plenty of crowds.
