While it might sound like a big deal for a major cruise line to alter its existing routes, especially when they’re planned out years ahead of time, it’s not unheard of for the industry. Cruise companies often cancel or reschedule routes based on conditions like vessel maintenance and upgrades, along with port availability and homeport changes.
For example, Barcelona is reshaping its docks, lessening the number of cruise ports from eight to five in the coming years. That update could impact cruise routes that have already been planned for the city.
According to Carnival Cruises, in a statement released to USA Today, “While we try to maintain original itineraries as much as possible, at times modifications are made to optimize voyages to meet guest demand or due to changing port availability.”
In other words, changes to port availability and optimized routes are behind recent cancellations and alterations to Carnival Cruise routes—meaning the ship is likely being prepared for a new home port. This has caused a slew of changes to planned itineraries. Here’s what we know.
