Once upon a time, during an Airbnb stay near Cancun, my partner and I befriended another couple staying at the property.

The pair was quite memorable. They were punk-rock fans from Austria who specialized in making schnapps. They even brought some with them, which we happily sampled. Eventually, over the course of our stay, we also learned something else about the couple—something that caught me off guard.
They’re mega-fans of the Hard Rock hospitality brand. They could tell us which hotels and cafes they had visited, along with which ones they couldn’t wait to check out someday.
I’d seen plenty of Hard Rock cafes around the world—but I hadn’t realized the company had a cult travel following on par with Margaritaville. Turns out, Hard Rock has a massive global following—and even a list of big-name casinos and hotels on its roster.
Welcome to the world of Hard Rock travel.
Inside Hard Rock International
Hard Rock Café is the first iteration of the Hard Rock brand. It was started back in 1971 by two Brits, who opened the Hard Rock Café in London. They decorated the walls with rock’n roll memorabilia, which has since become associated with the brand. Many Hard Rock locations are home to major music memorabilia, from guitars donated by The Who to Michael Jackson’s fedoras.
Over the next four decades, the brand grew and expanded internationally before being bought out by the Seminole Tribe of Florida in 2007. When the Seminole Tribe purchased Hard Rock Café, they expanded it even further, incorporating new interests like hotels, casinos, parks, and even stadiums.
In 2021, Hard Rock executives made a huge move in buying The Mirage on the Vegas Strip—which has since been rebranded as the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
For mega-fans of Hard Rock, their main interest is largely in visiting Hard Rock Cafes and staying at Hard Rock Hotels. As of 2026, Hard Rock has 330 cafes open around the world, with more slated to come, along with 34 hotel and casino ventures.
Why do people like Hard Rock Cafes so much?
For the Austrian couple whom I met in Cancun, Hard Rock Cafes were part of their travel outlook. They didn’t plan trips around Hard Rock Café visits, but they absolutely incorporated them into their itineraries wherever possible.
Here’s why people love the brand and enjoy visiting properties.
They have actual music memorabilia

Like I already mentioned, Hard Rock Café decks out its restaurants with famous music memorabilia. Some Hard Rock fans enjoy the experience because they’re hardcore fans of rock, alternative, and even pop. Showing up to a Hard Rock Café means they’ll get to feel closer to their favorite musicians and bands. They might even get to see real-life memorabilia from the group.
In fact, some famous musicians like Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney have actual ties to Hard Rock. They’ve donated memorabilia and shown up at locations, meaning it has authentic ties to the music world.
There’s a collectibles factor

Hard Rock Cafes each have their own distinct layout, ambiance, and collectibles. That’s a big deal for Hard Rock fans—they get to feel like they’re adding a souvenir from their trip to their Hard Rock collection. Items like shot glasses and t-shirts give a bit more depth and meaning to the experience.
As someone who militantly collects magnets from my trips, I get it—shopping for magnets is something I look forward to on each trip, and they aren’t nearly as cool as a café full of music memorabilia.
Cafes feel familiar in strange lands

Here’s another perk for Hard Rock mega-fans: They know what to expect when they step onto a property. Again, that might not sound like a big deal, but I understand what it’s like to seek some comfort on the road. For me, it’s not a Hard Rock Café that I’m looking for—it’s usually an Irish pub where I know I can watch sports and eat a familiar meal.
There’s also the potential to meet other Hard Rock Café (or HRC, as they’re known) fans while visiting. HRC social media groups span the global and have thousands of active participants. It’s sort of like being in a social club, in other words, and each Hard Rock Café is a clubhouse.
