I personally think the National Mall is one of the most sterile locations in the United States.

But that makes sense. Many parts of Washington DC need to look tip-top to present our country well to visiting ambassadors, diplomats, and nationals. And while nobody likes to feel like they’re walking through a movie set, that perfectly tended feeling doesn’t translate across DC.
DC has soul out the wazoo—and plenty for travelers to do, from snacking at budget-friendly Michelin-starred eateries to exploring some of the country’s best museums (that are also free). To toss in another magic ingredient, DC’s public transportation system is one of the most accessible in the nation, making it particularly great for solo travelers.
Oh, and it has reasonably priced, perfectly appointed Airbnbs around every corner. Here’s where to find some of the best.
Airbnbs in Washington, DC
One-bedroom guest suite in prime location (Capitol Hill)

This one-bedroom basement apartment sleeps four guests. The main perk is its excellent location on Capitol Hill, putting you close to DC’s biggest attractions. You can walk to many of them in under a half-hour. Plus, you get street parking—just make sure to send the host your car make and license plate number to get a guest pass beforehand.
Shared apartment that feels like a museum (Bloomingdale)

Looking for a little charm in your stay? And possibly an anthropological feel? This room rental is housed inside the home of a well-traveled gentleman (I’m not sure what other word to use—the décor is decidedly classy). You’re sure to hear a few great recommendations while having access to an ultra-cozy and well-appointed home.
Close to museums (Mt. Pleasant)

If you’ll be museum-hopping during your time in DC, check out this rental. It’s a one-bedroom that can sleep up to four using a sofa bed. The unit is newly renovated with specialized soundproofing materials and comes with a free parking pass for the street. In addition to being close to museums, Mt. Pleasant is also close to some of the city’s best nightlife.
Bungalow-style apartment near Union Market

This lovely studio puts you close to all the action. You’re blocks away from the NoMa Metro Station and Union Market. Other hotspots like the National Mall are also within walking distance. You also have access to a back garden, giving you a great spot to enjoy your morning coffee or a glass of wine after a long day.
Hideaway on U Street

Who doesn’t love a cozy little hideaway? This brand-new rental only has one review—which doesn’t bother me, but might be a no-go for some travelers. The location is hard to beat. It’s on U Street right in the heart of the action, while close to Logan Circle and Dupont Circle. The one-bedroom is also a treat for the eyes, decked out with warm, organic features that will make you feel at home. There’s even a rooftop with a grill, in case you want to eat well.
Affordable studio near Capitol Hill (Eastern Market)

This basement unit sleeps two in a studio-style setup. Despite being in the basement, there’s plenty of natural light. The main perk is that you’re within walking distance to all of Capitol Hill’s biggest attractions. There’s also an impressive king-sized mattress with a high-quality topper.
One-bedroom with a backyard (NoMa)

Location and style culminate into a hard-to-beat listing. You can sleep up to four guests thanks to the unit’s Queen-sized blow-up mattress. There’s also an outdoor space in the back where you can unwind on the quiet, tree-lined street. You can usually find parking on the street, as well.
Stylish retreat in Capitol Hill (Capitol Hill)

This stylish one-bedroom rental is a treat for travelers who are bored with the same old décor. The walls are decked out with art, while the furniture has tons of personality—without being tacky or over-the-top. Even the backyard has a bit of flair. Plus it’s only a few blocks away from Logan Circle.
Old World-Style condo in nightlife zone (Logan Circle/Dupont Circle)

Speaking of style, if you like the Capitol Hill rental listed above, check this one out. It’s also a new rental and only has two reviews. If that’s not a turn-off, you’ll love the eclectic design. Rich colors and antique pieces created an Old World-style space that still feels chic. (Think: karaoke machines and Philips Hue lighting.) It even has a name: Club Corcoran. Unsurprisingly, this trendy spot is close to the city’s best nightlife.
