10 Incredible Maui Vacation Homes You Should Rent Now

    Kristen Pettineo
    Updated: February 08, 2023

If you’re looking for paradise, you’ll find it on Maui. It’s the second-largest Hawaiian island, and it truly has something for everyone: pristine beaches, awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets from the top of Mount Haleakala, some of the world’s best whale watching, delicious farm-to-table cuisine, and fantastic hiking trails. And that’s just the tip of the volcano.

    Videos by TravelAwaits

And now is a great time to visit Hawaii. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the state’s governor asked out-of-state residents to please refrain from traveling to Hawaii and required long quarantines for those that did so. It had some of the strictest testing protocols of any domestic destination — which proved to be logistically tricky for many visitors.

But as of this spring, much of those requirements have been relaxed.

If you’re planning a getaway to Maui, you have a large selection of accommodations available at your fingertips. Hotels and resorts run the gamut from budget lodging to five star, luxury enclaves. But many visitors find they appreciate the convenience of a Maui vacation rental — where they can prepare their own meals and get away from the crowds.

With that in mind, we’ve picked out some of our top Vrbo vacation rentals on Maui. Tough assignment, right? We cross-referenced listings with custom reviews to find our favorites. Just pack a swimsuit and prepare for departure. Not a fan of VRBOs? Here are some Maui hotels for families.

Hana Bay Oceanfront Manini Cottage$595/nightly avg

    Maui Hawaii Rental - 2
    VRBO.com

If you want some room to stretch your legs, check out the beautiful Manini Cottage. This oceanfront cottage is nestled upon the gorgeous bluffs above Hana Bay. The owners say this property is completely renovated and includes a full kitchen with all new appliances.

The glass-wall shower is perfect for a relaxing post-swim shower, and we can totally picture ourselves enjoying a homemade meal on the covered Ipe ocean deck. Afterward, enjoy a leisurely evening in one of the outdoor hanging chairs.

You can’t beat the location, either. Guests can walk to nearby Hana Bay Beach Park or Waikaloa Black Sand Beach — both are about 5 minutes away. You can also walk to nearby Hana Town to check out local food trucks.

    Ka’anapali Cottage$550/nightly avg

If you like being in the center of it all, check out this luxurious private cottage in the heart of the Ka’anapali resort area in Lahaina. This property seems to have everything — including a fully appointed kitchen, bright bedrooms with vaulted ceilings, and Roku smart TVs in every room.

If you’re feeling beachy, good news: Kahekili Beach is just across the street! You’ll find dining, gear rental, and golf all just a few steps away.

There are two heated community pools on property, and the Ka’anapali Resort, where you’ll find shopping and fine dining, is just a short drive away.

Rating Details:The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless.I was very happy with the location.I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental.Overall, I recommend this vacation rental.Reviewer Comments:The house was really wonderful – very updated, clean and functional. My husband and I went with his mother to Maui and having a 2-bed, 2-bath unit was a very nice component of the house. The whole house was warm, welcoming and very functional. The property manager was kind and attentive. It was only about a 10 min walk from the beach – you do have to cross a very busy road but you don’t have to wait for the traffic light for too long. Overall it was great and we would go back!
This property was wonderful; it had all of the amenities shown in the listing and was exactly as shown. Parking was in private lot and was maybe a min or two from the cabin. The beach takes only a few mins to walk to and the wagon portable cooler made getting to the beach with beverages a breeze. We stayed for a week and when it was up it was very hard to go back to the cold and snow of Wisconsin. Pro-tip: sign up for the customer loyalty card at Safeway (it will save a lot of money on groceries) and hang out in Paia if you have time to kill between checking out and boarding your flight (lots of cool restaurants and shops and is near the airport). This was a great vacation and this property is now in our short list of ones to revisit in Maui!

The surrounding landscape is beautiful and the pool is only steps away. We had 6 people in the cottage and it never felt crowded. Very clean and well stocked. Already miss it!
Great place to stay with family and friends. Only steps away from the pool and a short walk to a beautiful beach park. We really enjoyed this lovely house. Debbie was very helpful and accommodating. Highly recommend!

Hamoa Beach Plantation House Hale Ulu Lulu$395/nightly avg

If you want a truly unique experience, don’t miss this gorgeous blast from the past. The owners describe this house rental as an authentic, meticulously renovated sugar cane plantation owner’s home in Hana.

This home, built in 1900, underwent a significant rebuild in 2005. It has been completely restored with special care taken to maintain historical details — but it’s also updated with modern amenities. The decor has a distinctly vintage Hawaiian vibe, and we can easily picture ourselves enjoying a mai tai while taking in the ocean views.

The home is situated on a lush 2-acre property, close to beaches and a natural pool, and just 3 miles south of Hana Town.

We had a great stay in Hana. The location was perfect for visiting the sights and there was no need to rush. The kitchen was well-stocked and had all of the essentials and more. We enjoyed grabbing dinner at the food trucks, but make sure to go early as many of them close before 5 pm or run out of food. We look forward to our next visit and would not hesitate to stay here again.
This beautiful cottage was dreamy & the hosts are most gracious!! We stayed 3 nights and our only regret is that we didn’t stay longer. Within walking distance is Venus pool, and a quick drive into Hana which has some of the best foods we had in Maui. A quick 15ish min drive to 7 sacred pools. The public beaches are gorgeous & we’re never crowded. Tips: – Read the book from past travelers to find out all the great places surrounding this gem of a VRBO – There is Beach equipment in the closet to left in the living room (we didn’t see the boogie boards til the last day!)
Envision sunrise/sunset views over the Pacific; easy access to all that Hana has to offer; and a relaxed vibe in a restored plantation home… and you get the ultimate Hana retreat. The house was prepped and ready for us in pristine condition. It was spacious for two people, though the bedroom was very small. Appreciated the opening to the living room for air flow. It was quite hot during our stay, and even with several fans going it was bit uncomfortable. I would suggest replacing the overhead living room fan (no adjustment, low speed) and adding one to the kitchen and dining. Would be better than the floor fans. While the aesthetic of the house was beautiful, the living room was not really comfortable. The vintage couch was cute, but not comfortable, and the lounge chair kind of worked. Would have loved a couple of couches to chill on, watch a movie, after an adventureous day of hiking or swimming. Even with the screen doors closed, there were quite a few bugs inside the house (it is the jungle in reality), so that was not ideal. A wonderful respite to recoup from the Road to Hana.
This hale is the ideal Hana getaway. It captures the feel of the tropics while maintaining a sense of luxury. We have stayed at 4 different Hana VRBO properties, and have finally found “the” one we love. The hale is clean, well decorated (so much so that I posted Facebook pictures of all the little details and received lots of favorable comments), and provides an excellent base to relax from, or, never leave. We loved reclining at the end of our days on the loungers in front of the hale as the sun went down, and returning for our morning coffee to watch the sun come up. There are beautiful plants and flowers all over the property that make the outdoor time a treat in and of itself. If you are looking for a clean, high-end, comfortable, home that makes you “feel” like you are in the tropics (what I call old Hawaii) without having to give up a shred of luxury, this is your place!
This place is magic. We had come off of camping at Haleakala and Waianapanapa for two days and were so happy to have this place to land. It’s the most charming and comfortable home for two city people to unwind and slow down in.Everything you want to eat is a short drive away. Every beautiful beach you want to visit is also a short drive away. You can see the ocean from all of the front windows. The ocean breezes kept us cool at night. There are chickens that roam the property and add to the country feeling of Hana. So in summary, this place was perfect for us.This place is beautiful and charming and worth every penny. Any bug concerns were taken care of by all the fans in the house. Be kind to the locals and leave each spot as beautiful as you found it. We would gladly come back and stay here over and over again.

    Akela at Ho’olei$3,798/nightly avg

So, let’s get the obvious thing out of the way first: This breathtaking villa is definitely what we’d call an “aspirational” destination. If budget isn’t a concern, this could very much be your speed.

Akela at Ho’olei is part of a gated community in Wailea — a tony, upscale area of Maui where you’ll also find some of the island’s most luxurious resorts. In fact, if you stay here, access to the nearby Grand Wailea Resort is included, complete with its pools, water slides, a spa, and restaurants. If you call the front desk, they’ll even come pick you up! Round-trip resort transfers are included in your nightly rate. Talk about a great location!

But back to the villa: You’ll enjoy panoramic ocean views, a gorgeous lanai to watch the sunset, and even a chef-grade outdoor kitchen.

There’s a one-car garage with elevator access — especially convenient if stairs are difficult for anyone in your party. Even though no one enjoys doing laundry on vacation, you’ll appreciate the washer and dryer on the premises.

The kitchen is fully stocked with everything from a wok to a waffle maker. And if you don’t feel like cooking, just call the concierge staff to arrange a personal chef to prepare a special meal in your villa. Sounds like paradise to us.

    Kihei Garden Cottage$706/nightly avg

Just up the road from Wailea, you’ll find this lovely cottage in Kihei. It’s definitely a more laid-back vibe than Wailea, but the South Shore beaches are just as beautiful.

This is the perfect home base for a solo traveler or couple wanting quiet privacy and relaxing outdoor space. Guests can enjoy a private saltwater hot tub, perfect after a long day at the beach. Speaking of which, this property is conveniently located near the gorgeous Kama’ole beaches in South Kihei, perfect for snorkeling.

And you can feel good about your stay, too: This is a green energy home that uses solar power. Who says it’s not easy being green?

One of the best maintained and equipped rentals that I stayed in. Highly recommend it.
This property is a must stay! Prime location, it was within walking distance to just about anything, the beach, restaurants, grocery stores, coffee! The house was clean, neat, and fully stocked with anything you could have forgotten to pack and more. The neighborhood was quiet, and secure. The host were great ! We had a great stay and look forward to staying here again on our next visit to Maui.
Absolutely everything about the booking process, cottage, and our stay was exactly as expected. Can’t say enough good things about how well-stocked the cottage is, how well-located, and how well-designed it is, inside and out, to take best advantage of every square foot available. Wonderful hosts, wonderful stay, hope we get to return ASAP!
This Hawaiian Cottage is an amazing place to stay! We had one of the most relaxing vacations in Maui because of where we stayed! The listing description provides many comforts and amenities, which are ALL true. The beauty of this place is hard to believe until you are actually there….imagine a cup of coffee with a wonderful breakfast on the side lanai… the palm trees beside you and the beautiful back yard behind you… the birds are singing and there is a gentle breeze. It doesn’t get any better than that! Again, privacy, ultimate comfort, and so much beauty!
This was a clean, private, beautifully decorated little paradise! It was as depicted in a quiet neighborhood that was walking distance to the lovely main street in Kihei. The gardens are beautiful, the kitchen is stocked with everything you could hope for….I should say that the entire house is stocked with everything you need! The overall location is central to all Maui has to offer! Jenni was a pleasure to deal with and her recommendations are spot on! We hated to leave and hope to return again! Thank you for sharing this lovely home!

    Honu’ea Cottage$425/nightly avg

This romantic cottage is named for the endangered Hawksbill turtles (Honu’ea) that nest on the shores near the property. How cool is that?

You know what else is cool? The unobstructed ocean views you’ll enjoy from this perfect location. The owners say the sandy beach is just steps from the front door. You’re also just a short walk from local restaurants, grocery stores, and shops. But if staying in is more your speed, you can enjoy meals on the spacious lanai. We think this cozy cottage would be perfect for solo travelers or a couple wanting to explore Maui’s lush south shore.

My wife and I had an amazing stay at this house for our honeymoon. The home was as described and check in was easy and straight forward. Amber was a great host and very quick to respond to any questions we had. Make sure to check out the turtles coming up on the beach every night!!
We enjoyed our stay so much we didn’t want to leave. Great view and very relaxing. Convenient to shopping or places to eat. Very satisfied
This Kihei cottage is something special! The highlight being the unobstructed ocean view and resident sea turtles beachside every night. Sunsets are amazing here! We’ve been to Maui many times and this is by far our favorite rental! We slept well and appreciated the beach chairs, umbrella, and cooler. So much privacy and easy access to walks on the beach. Easy check in and arrived to a very clean cottage. Highly recommend and hope to return on our next Maui visit!
We really enjoyed our stay at this cottage. Everything we expected!!! This property is perfect if you want to have privacy and beach front location. Beautiful scenery and peaceful surroundings. Also, we could walk to many restaurants and stores!! Great time!!!
This cottage was absolutely perfect for us two—we loved it! The view across the lush, fragrant yard to the ocean was absolutely stunning and peaceful all times of day. Watching sunset on the lanai or bringing the provided folding chairs and ice chest to the beach in the mornings or evenings was easy and relaxing. Seeing the turtles come onto the beach right in front of the cottage each evening was so amazing—just spectacular and unforgettable. The inside of the cottage was light and airy and had everything we needed. Amber was a great host—very informative but non intrusive. We would definitely stay here again if we make it back to Maui.
