12 Downtown Chicago Vacation Rentals Perfect For Exploring The City

    William Stupp
    July 18, 2022

Chicago is a world-class city with world-class attractions. There is, after all, a reason why so many people have made the city their home. Chicago isn’t just any big city. It is a unique metropolis shaped by its people, history, and geography. No visit is complete without a stroll along Lake Michigan and walk through the adjacent parks or perhaps a visit to the historical Wrigley Field. From the culinary arts to the visual and theatrical, Chicago boasts a wide range of attractions for visitors to enjoy.

    Videos by TravelAwaits

One factor that makes getting the most out of a Chicago getaway especially practical is the density of the downtown area. The Loop covers just 1.5 square miles of land, but many of the city’s most popular points of interest are within The Loop or a short distance away. Now there is plenty to see outside of The Loop, but for first-time visitors keen to see the very best the city has to offer, there is plenty to see, do, and photograph without straying far from downtown. It is safe, full of things to do, well-served by public transportation, and really quite walkable. For these reasons, staying downtown just makes sense.

Even with narrowing your search to downtown Chicago, there is still a large selection of vacation rentals available. So, we did the work for you! Here is a list of 12 of the best Vrbo condos/apartments and house rentals to stay downtown. Each of the properties below gives visitors easy access to the city’s best experiences.

    Apartment In 55th-Floor Penthouse$937/nightly avg

What a life it must be to always have a living room like the window-filled marvel in this towering building! Set in a great location, the high ceilings and plentiful windows give visitors incredible views of downtown and Lake Michigan. There’s even a wrap-around balcony for those not content to enjoy the city from inside.

With two queen bedrooms and a king, every guest gets a luxurious treatment. If you’re bringing extra guests, don’t worry: The futon in the living room might actually be the nicest place to sleep given the fireplace and fantastic view. The apartment rental’s building has a gym, swimming pool, and even a grocery store on the ground level.

Great view and great building. Seamless arrival/parking process. Would stay again.
We enjoyed our stay here so much – the location was perfect for walking! We had our vehicle along but never felt like we needed to pull it from parking. The VIEWS were incredible – the pictures online don’t do it justice! We loved seeing the Navy Pier fireworks from the balcony at night. Thanks for a great stay!
My family had a blast staying in this beautiful property. Great location, easy to get to many attractions, and amenities were great.
Fabulous property with extraordinary downtown views. Very clean and well appointed. Super convenient location! Easy check in and check out process. Thank you so much for the excellent stay!!!
The place as great! Very spacious. Close to everything we wanted to do. They responded to our questions immediately. Will try to stay there in the future

Luxury Skyhouse In The West Loop$666/nightly avg

Wake up, scratch your eyes, and gawk at the size of the big city while looking out from floor-to-ceiling windows in this fabulous apartment. All three queen bedrooms are blessed with amazing views, as is the elegant big city kitchen.

Guests have access to all the building’s amenities, including a swimming pool, fitness studio, and rooftop terrace. As an added perk, there is no extra charge to make use of the below-ground parking garage. But, given the proximity of trains and more, driving is definitely optional.

We want to thank Michelle and Dan. They went far and beyond anyone would do to make sure our stay in Chicago was enjoyable and comfortable. We asked for a possible later checkout, as we have two toddlers and our flight was later in the evening. They obliged and that made a big difference to us.The apartment is clean, well equipped, modern and the views are beautiful. We will most certainly look for the same apartment again if we come back to Chicago for a visit.
This property worked out great for our family including 2 kids – 6 & 8 years old. Property has great parking accommodations, spacious floor plan, great view of the city and very clean. The property is located in a great part of the city with plenty of short walking distance food options including a great breakfast spot directly across the street. Also, a Whole Foods within a 5-minute walk.We will use this property again when we return to Chicago!
Outstanding location and wonderful property with amazing amenities!
We’re a tight knit team who came to Chicago for a trade show. Having this apartment gave us time to share coffee and plan our day together as we got ready, unwind together at the end of the day and we appreciated being in a neighborhood. We loved the floor to ceiling windows, the layout worked perfectly for us, loved the stocked kitchen and also the view, the view, the view!
Beautiful place and location. Enjoyed the amenities as well. Great location for downtown and dining. Convenient in and out.

Luxe Loft in Chicago near Grant Park

An elegant example of contemporary minimalist design, this loft apartment brings you right where the action is. There isn’t space here to mention all the excellent restaurants and attractions a short walk away, but know that they’re out there.

Just two blocks from Grant Park, it’s a particularly great stay if you’re coming for one of the many events hosted there. In addition to the two bedrooms, there’s room for plenty of fellow visitors on the two beautifully designed sofas and air mattresses.

My family and I loved the views that this apartment offers. Each room, including bedrooms, has an incredible view of Lake Michigan, the Harbor, and/or the Chicago Skyline. For a property that offers some of the best views in Chicago and costs ~$5,000 for three nights, we expected the place to be clean. There were toe nail clippings on the living room floor and one on the kitchen counter next to the stove. There were layers of dust on every surface including the night stands and TV console. The absolute worst was the furniture in the living room. There was a stain that appeared to be a urine stain on one of the sofas and when we turned the cushion over, there were blood stains on the other side. We spent most of our time outside the apartment in the city but when we did come back in the evening, it was disappointing to not be able to sit on some of the furniture due to them being so dirty. It’s a beautiful property and some investment in clean, quality furniture, dishes (there were only 4 coffee mugs and we had 6 people in our family), and most of all, cleaning would make this a spectacular apartment.
This spacious condo in downtown Chicago is well suited for a group of 6. with 3 large bedrooms and all necessary amenities. The views of Lake Michigan, the park and downtown are breathtaking. The check in process could use a more “personalized” touch as you communicate with a large property management group before your arrival. The day of check in was smoother with an actual person assisting our group. Overall we had a great stay.
    Had a great stay!
ENVITAE is a process-focused company who is efficient, cares about its customers, and seeks to make your stay enjoyable and easy. If you enjoy fireworks, cityscape views, and watching boats on Lake Michigan, you’ll like this apartment. It may have the best seats in the city for The Navy Pier’s fireworks on Wednesday and Saturday nights. The apartment easily accommodated our family of 6, including 4 kids aged 6-10. The kids particularly enjoyed the indoor pool, which we often had entirely to ourselves. Hope you like it too.
We enjoyed this place very much. Excellent views from all the rooms, quiet. Very close to all the attractions Chicago has to offer. Would stay there again.

Penthouse On The 13th Floor$444/nightly avg

Spacious and enviably located, this downtown penthouse is a great way to see Chicago. There’s so much to see in the city, and, if you stay here, you needn’t even leave the house to take a lot of it in. With high ceilings, oversized windows, and a balcony, this apartment boasts commanding views.

If that weren’t enough, visitors can also take in the panorama from the rooftop deck. One block down from the park and three from the river, the location is certainly something. This 1,400-square-foot property has two queen bedrooms, one full, and room for two more on the futon.

Great place to stay when visiting Chicago. Right off the Blue Line train when coming from O’Hare ($3 on the train versus $60-$80 for an Uber). Nice lobby and condo was wonderful. Lots of light and ambient city sound (earplugs provided if you need it quieter) – views from the room AND the rooftop were spectacular! So many things are so close – and trains easy to get to also. Coffemaker with filters on premises – you need to bring your own coffee/creamer. Will return with my family in the future!
We loved to stay in this excellent Penthouse, with a outstanding view. The apartment was perfect for us, fully equipped and with a modern interior design. We hope, coming back soon.
Loved the host staff at the building more than my luggage!!
Great stay at this wonderful unit . Clean and great decor . Close to everything. Owners were excellent in responding to inquiries. Will definitely be back . Thank you stay well hospitality!
We enjoyed staying and found the property to be well appointed in the kitchen and bathrooms. The views were great from two bedrooms. One bedroom is quite small and no view, but worked okay for us. The mattresses were not good, but we had a great time and would recommend the place overall.

    Light-Filled Penthouse Condo$255/nightly avg

The flowers, plants, and floral designs make this 8th-floor penthouse feel uncannily quaint for a tall structure in America’s third-largest city. With nothing above but the sky, the architects have given this apartment high ceilings and plenty of windows.

Enjoy peace of mind in one of the city’s safest neighborhoods. Walk without worry to Shedd Aquarium, Millennium Park, the Adler Planetarium, and many more attractions. Great for a family looking for a comfortable temporary home in Chicago.

Cute place with lots of storage. Super comfy beds. Easy walk to public transportation and Grant Park, etc. Could use a few more kitchen items like a corkscrew and more coffee cups. That was the only thing we were missing.
Apartment is secure and quiet. There are places that you can park your vehicle and walk to any destination. Aka The Bean, Willis Tower, etc.
Nice place and easy to get to. Clean and lots of space.
This is a huge property, so we’ll located for the price. The management team were incredibly responsive and I hope to stay here again!
It is in a safe neighborhood and we felt VERY safe in the building! There is parking right next door, owners were easy to communicate with and the beds were comfy. We were very pleased with this property and would recommend stat here.

We rented a one bedroom with listing said city noise to be expected. What they chose to leave out in the original description was that the unit would face the L (and we were one level above it). Every time the metro came by, and remember this is in the Loop so extra busy in the mornings, it was thunderous. Bedroom had barn doors so couldn’t even shut out the noise at night bc the doors left gaps. The company did update the listing after we notified them of the L issue- affects only the 1 and 2- bedroom units. The management group sent an email 3 days prior saying the elevator was broken with no known repair date. Better check on that status if you are considering this place. The upside- easy access to L/buses, Grant Park and theaters. The unit was clean and well stocked. Target is right across the street, which is helpful getting supplies for a longer stay.

Great location, condo is spacious and well equipped, bed in main is very comfortable. Adequate amenities. Only 1 issue, heating was not available and we froze the first night. Envitae was to get us portable heaters but did not come through.
Very spacious, clean and modern. Close to everything you want to see or do. Parking is terrible and you can’t park in the building. That’s my only criticism.
The views from this unit are spectacular and the location can’t be beat! Watch the fireworks at Navy Pier from the living room windows. The neighbor is safe, and the area around the building is well kept. Grocery west one block, and the Ohio Street beach is also one block away. We found the unit clean, with comfortable beds, clean baths, and reasonably appropriated kitchen. The furniture is comfortable in the living space, though the master bedroom furnishing was sparse. Reviews mentioned a cumbersome registration and check in, but I didn’t find it invasive. I gave initials for my kids rather than names, and that was fine. We found the hosts to be accommodating (Red-Line was down creating an arrival delay for us, but they waited patiently to get us in the building). My questions were answered promptly and easily through text.
Wonderful trip with family. We enjoyed the Christmas lights and decorations. View from the apartment was amazing! We walked to Millennium Park, Navy Pier and enjoyed local restaurants. Would love to visit again. Apartment was well furnished, clean and cozy.
Overall a great place to stay! Cons:1) Invasive booking process. You have to separately provide a selfie, driver license, and credit card info to the property management company Envitae in order to book the room. 2) only 1 of the 2 keys provided is able to unlock the front door3) parking is extra, $69/night4) Floor hadn’t been mopped (bottom of feet turned black after walking bare-foot around apartment for an hour)Pros: 1) Great location2) Fantastic views3) Easy check-in & check-out process 4) Large bedrooms and adequate bathrooms5) Someone from their property management company Envitae is always accessible via text messageWas my first time in Chicago and this rental is overall great! Even with the minor cons, I’d stay here again in the future.

This was an excellent rental for our purposes. It is very difficult to find parking in Chicago and the parking garage is at the property. It was a very pleasant, quite spacious, and nicely furnished apartment with a great kitchen and laundry.
Views were amazing. The amenities were amazing! Super close to everything we needed and very pet friendly.
    Great condo and good location.
Great location in South Loop in spacious studio with view from your private balcony of city skyline. Full amenities, comfortable bed and nice building with parking INCLUDED in rental price. A lovely BARGAIN. We shall return!
Close to the lake, parks and downtown. Nice newer building. The room as all the supplies you’ll need including full-size washer/dryer.

Me and my family of 5 w/ kids 10,8,3 stayed here during the Chicago Marathon. The location was amazing due to its location close to the route and so close to public trains. It’s a bit tricky to find but Dean was awesome when we called and got us situated very quickly. Apart for some street and train noise in the living room it was a pretty quiet stay. Bedrooms were well furnished and as quiet as you could expect. Large living area was a plus and the whole place was well maintained. The buildings stairway up is a bit dirty and worn. But otherwise this place is a great option for a 2 bedroom place so close to everything you could want.
This is a really cool place to stay! Super comfortable and lots of space to hang out. Highly recommended!
Our teen kids, partner, and I had the pleasure of staying here for a weekend of concerts. The property was clean, located amongst restaurants with easy access to tourist venues, and the host was responsive to the one inquiry we had. I would highly recommend this property!
We spent 5 days here and absolutely loved it. Dean and his wife were fantastic with communication and were very helpful and flexible during check in and check out. The place is in great shape – clean, everything works, has all the appliances you would want – and has great decor and ambiance. It is in the heart of the amazing bars and restaurants of River North and is in walking distance to all the sites and scenes of the core of Chicago. We would stay here again any day!!
We enjoyed the spot for two nights.

Private Home In The Near North Side$449/nightly avg

Most Chicagoans live in high-rise apartments. That doesn’t mean it isn’t possible to spend your visit in a genuine house. This huge home is just that: a house with a backyard and other homey fixtures.

Located in a quiet neighborhood just north of what is considered downtown, this is a great place for a large group to see a different side of Chicago. The Loop is still close, but the location almost feels suburban. The house has two kitchens and two entrances, easily accommodating a very large group while preserving privacy.

She was very communicative and met us at the property to ensure we had Eve try thing that we needed. She was very responsive and helpful during the whole stay!
The neighborhood was nice. Places to walk to and find Food and Drink. Second City Comedy is a short walk away. The people in my group were work associates so some aren’ t comfortable “sharing” a room. Even though there are lots of beds some are doubled up in rooms. For our group of 7 people it was perfect. The amenities were fine and we enjoyed our stay. Would consider it again.
Our family of eleven, age 3-73, had a wonderful stay. We walked to restaurants, the beach, and the zoo. We had family breakfasts together, easily finding everything we needed in the kitchen. We had plenty of room to spread out, some staying up late, some waking early without bothering each other. The house is noisy though. The train starts running at 5AM right outside the master bedroom, and the AC ventilation fan was very obtrusive. It turned five stars to four.
Our stay in Old Town was fantastic. The house, although an older home, is clean and nice. The small outdoor space in the back was perfect. Our teenagers loved the downstairs space for themselves and our younger kids stayed in the main house with my husband and me. The neighborhood is very much full of young people and dogs which we loved. As a big family, we did feel a little out of place, but it wouldn’t deter me from renting the place again. It was a short trip to all the fun places to see in Chicago. Loved the stay!!
We wanted to spend the week in the city and this property allowed us to be close to everything. Perfect price for the location and for a family of 19!

Enjoyed our stay very much. Would have been nice to get local free to air Chicago TV stations to keep up with local news and weather. A hair dryer would have been nice. There was no sugar to go with the coffee. Just little things, but the apartment was really nice.
Our girls trip was so much fun starting with our awesome stay at this Streeterville condo. The communication was great and any questions and emails were answered very timely. Check-in and check-out process was easy. The 2 king beds and 2 bathrooms were perfect for our group. We enjoyed the Cafecito Cafe downstairs too! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would stay again!
My colleagues and I attended a conference in Chicago, and I was looking for a place to stay within walking difference to the conference location, as well as some of the major Chicago attractions I.e. Navy Pier, Magnificent Mile, restaurants—the location was perfect for this! The place also has a enough bed space to sleep 7-8 people comfortably. I would stay here again!
Beautiful two bed, two bath directly next to the John Hancock Tower in Streeterville. Perfect vacation spot or weekend get away.
We came to Chicago for a Cubs game and a concert. The apartment was great! We loved the location. It sits right between the lake and Michigan Ave. We did a lot of walking and eating at some of the great restaurants nearby. The beds were comfy and the condo is very roomy. Would definitely stay here again!
