If you’re looking for a hands-off vacation where rest and relaxation are truly within reach, go with an all-inclusive.

Yes, all-inclusive resorts have wildly different atmospheres. You can find adults-only, party-focused resorts with swim-up bars, family-friendly resorts with waterparks and nightly entertainment, spa-centric resorts with treatments included in the bill, and plenty more.
But if you’re new to the all-inclusive experience, you might be a little hung up on all those tiers. Most all-inclusive resorts come with multiple booking options, which give you access to different restaurants, rooms, and experiences. These tiers determine what you’ll end up paying for during your visit.
They’re the most important aspect of nailing a perfect all-inclusive resort stay, but they aren’t the only thing to think about. Before you reserve your next stay, keep in mind these important factors for booking all-inclusive resorts. I’ve saved my most important tip for last.
First: a note on tiers at all-inclusive resorts
The vast majority of all-inclusives have four straightforward tiers: budget, mid-range, premium, and luxury. Your tier determines what you get access to at the resort, from buffet dining to gourmet culinary experiences, for example. Budget tiers include only the basics, like buffet dining, pool access, and basic water sports, for example.
Keep in mind that all-inclusives also have their own categories. Nicer all-inclusive resorts might be adults-only and focused on minimizing crowds for a more intimate ambiance. These resorts will still have a tier system that guests choose and pay for. In other words, there’s plenty of distinction and range in the all-inclusive resort world, meaning you need to pay attention to the details.
Just one last tip: If you’re ever invited to sit on a ‘short’ presentation in exchange for perks like free activities and drinks, skip it. They’re trying to sell you on a timeshare or a similar offer. You can research those on your own time when you’re not on vacation.
Important factors to think about when shopping for all-inclusive resorts
Factor #1: Properties can be huge—check them out thoroughly
Before we dig into the nitty-gritty of all-inclusive tiers, I recommend thoroughly checking out a property that interests you. Some all-inclusives have exclusive zones that are reserved for high-tier guests, so it’s worth it to know what areas of the resort interest you.
While a private beach and large pools are usually open to everyone, some pools might be adults-only or for higher tiers. The same for spas, fitness facilities, and similar amenities. Take a look around to get a feel for the resort, then check which tiers would give you access to what catches your eye. In other words, don’t see something flashy and assume a budget tier gives you access to it.
Factor #2: When it comes to meals, consider buffets vs made-to-order
Take a very close look at what types of dining experiences are included in your tier, along with drinks (alcoholic or not). This has consistently been the most important factor for me at all-inclusives; I can rock a buffet during the day, but I like a proper made-to-order meal in the evenings.
Check out the resort’s dining venues and which tiers give you access to which restaurants. Dining tends to get a little complex, as your tier might give you access to certain sit-down restaurants or a limited number of made-to-order meals. The same for drinks. You want to know whether booze is included, and at which venues.
Factor #3: Food and drink quality is also a consideration
Here’s my last tip on nailing the right dining tier: don’t forget about quality. Top-shelf liquor, for example, is usually available for premium and luxury tiers. The same for à la carte dining. If you want dining amenities like room service, make sure you take a close look at whether it’s included—and during what hours.
Factor #4: Don’t forget about crowds… and time share hawks
Usually, higher tiers give you access to pools and facilities where there are fewer crowds. The more you pay, the more you get in terms of exclusivity and relaxation. This is a big deal at resorts, especially larger budget resorts. You might be swallowed up by a crowd—and find it hard to nab a pool lounger.
With crowds comes the likelihood of running into a timeshare hawk. These are individuals who want to sell you on a timeshare—I’m sure you’ve heard of them. Just know that some resorts work hard to prevent guests from going into sales mode while you’re trying to sip on a pina colada poolside. Others don’t, and might actually try to rope you into a similar offer with a special presentation, like I mentioned up top.
Factor #5: Airport transfers, sound-proofing, and 24/7 dining are the secret ingredients
Of all the most important things to consider when booking all-inclusive resorts, these last three factors might not be the most important—but they’re how I separate the crème de la crème from a good all-inclusive.
First, there should be an airport transfer if you’re booking an all-inclusive abroad. I also appreciate transfers at domestic resorts, but that’s not quite as important to me. Second, the all-inclusive should have solid soundproofing between the rooms for higher tiers. It’s great for lower tiers, too—but I really want it when I pay more. Third, 24/7 room service is another key indicator that you’re in good hands, even when only available on higher tiers.
Factor #6: The most important consideration is transparent pricing
Here’s the most important element when you start booking all-inclusive resorts: Clarity. Tiers are complex, even if you’re familiar with all-inclusive setups. A resort should have an easy-to-understand and transparent pricing page.
If you’re getting turned around just reading through them, consider it a sign to keep looking for the right resort. No matter how many tiers are involved, how large a property is, and how many activities are on the schedule, a resort should have a very direct pitch that makes it easy for you to know what does and doesn’t come with your purchase.
