The security alert advises Americans to ‘exercise increased caution’. You can read the full release from the DOS on their travel.state.gov website.
The news comes as Americans are grappling with extended security lines at airports across the country. The delays are due to a lack of TSA staff, who are (once again) working unpaid during another government shutdown. The partial shutdown is thanks to debates on DHS funding, which is the department that oversees the TSA.
But the security alert isn’t related to federal funding—it ties back to the war in Iran, which has already disrupted flights across the Middle East.
Inside the new worldwide security alert for Americans
The security alert from the Department of State urges Americans to exercise increased caution, especially for those traveling through the Middle East. Additionally, the alert advises that US diplomatic facilities, like embassies, could be targeted, especially those in the Middle East.
The security alert also states, “Groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and/or Americans throughout the world.”
The alert also warns of disrupted airspace, which could impact flight routes. The DOS recommends Americans follow advice and cautions from their nearest embassy or consulate.
The DOS also reiterates that travelers should sign up for the STEP program, which registers your trip plans with the closest embassies and consulates. In case of emergency, they know you’re there and that you need to be updated on the latest warnings and alerts. (It takes around twenty minutes to enroll.)
