Friendly reminder: As of 2026, multiple countries now require Americans to apply for digital travel authorizations before visiting.

It might sound a little alarming, especially considering the American passport used to be enough to guarantee entry to a country. However, as tourism expands its reach, digital permits and visas are one of the easiest ways for governments to keep track of visiting nationals.
In other words, expect more digital authorizations in the coming years—even for countries that are friendly with the US. Some might be billed as visas, but most are straightforward travel applications and permits that are available online.
Enter the United Kingdom’s ETA or Electronic Travel Authorisation. It’s slowly been rolled out over the last three years as the digital system evolved, similar to the EU’s new EES and ETIAS.
However, the UK hasn’t actually required passengers to present an approved ETA to board their planes. Instead, since 2023, customs authorities have hammered out kinks with ETA and slowly spread the word about the upcoming requirement.
But, since February 25, 2026, all passengers visiting the UK must present an ETA prior to boarding their flights into the country. In other words, you can’t try to quickly apply for one between landing and reaching customs. Here’s what you need to know.
How to get an ETA before you visit the UK
I’ve got good news: It’s very easy to apply for an ETA. You can also download the app for Android or iOS, then apply for and access your ETA in the app. You can complete the whole process online in just about ten minutes—just click on the link above.
Here are the fast facts about applying for and receiving an ETA as an American visiting the United Kingdom:
- The ETA costs around $21 (or £16)
- Your ETA is valid for up to six months
- Most applications are processed in minutes, but delays could take up to three business days
- The ETA is designed for tourists—if you have permission to live, work, or study in the UK, you don’t need one
- Babies and young children also must have an ETA
- If you’re connecting to another international flight, you do not need at ETA—but if you’re leaving the airport or need to re-check bags, you might need one
