I’m from Saint Louis, Missouri, meaning I grew up feeling a playful rivalry with Kansas City.

Neither city lands on the map for travelers very often, especially those who live on the East or West Coast. Growing up, I knew KC as a hot spot for soccer tournaments, great barbecue, and a rapper called Tech N9ne. (What a combo.)
But Kansas City has had a bona fide glow-up over the last decade, largely thanks to sports. The Kansas City Chiefs have made the city a known quantity nationwide. Even some of the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches will be held at Arrowhead Stadium.
And those who end up in KC thanks to sports are likely to realize that the city has more cool things going on than anticipated, especially in its downtown area and other cool neighborhoods, from Midtown to River Market to Westport.
If you’re heading to KC anytime soon, I recommend staying in one of its top neighborhoods. Here’s where I would book.
