Each year, there’s a fresh set of advice surrounding when, precisely, you should be booking flights home for the holidays.

It’s a pretty high-stakes booking period for travelers—even if you regularly head home for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. That’s because airports experience a high volume of travelers, while airlines also hike up their prices to meet those demands.
In short, the standard advice of buying ahead of time won’t cut it. You need more information—like time periods to buy flights, tips on how to book those flights, and even advice on which airports you might need to schedule extra layover time at.
This year, we’ve got sage advice from FlightHub’s Ayoub Hissar, an executive and expert on booking holiday flights.
FlightHub, in case you haven’t used it before, is a third-party booking platform that lets you compare deals on flights, hotels, cars, and cruises. They serve over two million travelers a day, and have a long list of happy customers—just in case you’re looking for an alternative to Kayak, Booking, or a similar site.
Whether or not you book your flights home on FlightHub, you can use Hissar’s advice to get ahead. Here’s what you need to know about booking flights home this holiday season.
Insights on booking flights home this holiday season from a FlightHub executive
Here’s what Hissar recommends for travelers who have yet to book flights home for Christmas and New Year’s Eve:
- The best time to book flights for Christmas vacation is right now—so try to get those tickets booked by the end of October
- The busiest destinations during this period are Florida, California, Texas, and New York—so book even earlier if you’re heading to one of these states
- Nevada has also seen an upswing in ticket sales—so if you’re heading to Las Vegas, booking sooner rather than later can also help you save
- More travelers this year are taking a ‘wait and see’ approach to booking flights, but Hissar says that can be a costly mistake—try not to delay, if that’s usually your style
