Each year, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection releases its ‘Safest Destinations’ rankings for the coming year. The 2026 report, published in mid-October, relies on data and analysis from groups like Global Peace Index, GeoSure Global scores, and Numbeo, which focus on topics like crime, quality of life indexes, and more.
The results are weighted across different topics, such as LGBTQ safety, safety for female travelers, and more. Plus, the group also interviews a select number of travelers about their experience visiting various countries, adding a qualitative element.
The report was first launched in 2018—and a few countries have actually stayed within the Top 10 rankings for that whole time. (More on this below.)
