Robert Tellier was bitten by the travel bug at a very young age, and he was lucky enough to have parents who could afford to travel. After working in various positions in the travel industry over the years, he now enjoys writing and sharing travel, health, and fitness tips on his travel blog, Gr8 Travel Tips. Based in British Columbia, Canada, he focuses on the millions of Baby Boomers like him around the world!
Robert was kind enough to answer some of our travel questions. Read his answers below.
TA: How many years have you been traveling and what got you hooked?
Robert: I was very fortunate and lucky to travel as a young boy with my parents. My first overseas flight and trip was to Hawaii from Canada, and I have been hooked ever since!
TA: Do you specialize in a particular type of travel?
Robert: As a Baby Boomer, my focus is to inspire likewise individuals to travel and stay to stay healthy and fit at the same time.
TA: What is the best vacation you’ve ever taken?
Robert: That’s difficult to answer, as we’ve enjoyed a variety of travel over the years. Certainly our South Pacific Cruise and travels throughout Australia was amazing. As well, I toured mostly solo throughout India last season, which was awe inspiring.
TA: What’s one place you’ve always wanted to visit?
Robert: As an avid scuba diver, I have always wanted to visit Truk Lagoon in Micronesia.
TA: What’s one thing you ALWAYS pack when you travel?
Robert: My sporty prescription sunglasses!
TA: If you could only give a traveler one piece of advice, what would it be?
Robert: Respect the customs and culture of the people whose country you are a guest in.
TA: What are some of your favorite travel blogs and communities?
Robert: I follow and learn so much from so many, I really don’t have a favorite. I do follow Josh Gates from this hit series “Expedition Unknown.” Love that show!
TA: What would be your #1 recommendation for a place to travel in 2019?
Robert: I would have to say Thailand. Very affordable, wonderful people and fantastic food!
TA: Do you have any good airport or flight hacks for people traveling by plane?
Robert: Arrive early at the airport and be prepared when going through airport security lines. Treat flight attendants with respect, they have a very difficult job to do.
TA: Is there something you think most travelers worry too much about?
Robert: Always expect the unexpected when traveling. Things do not always go as planned and that’s a part of travel. Don’t stress about it, as things always work out in the long run.
TA: What’s a travel scam travelers should be wary of?
Robert: I’ve been very lucky over the years, knock on wood. I become very suspicious when approached on the street by strangers when traveling. Sure, I’ve been overcharged numerous times for cab fares, food on trains, but never the victim of an actual travel scam. Never give your credit card information to anyone over the phone when traveling or at home.
TA: What was the most romantic place you ever visited with a partner?
Robert: We’ve traveled to many tropical beach destinations over the years. Walking on the beach watching the sunset doesn’t get any better!
TA: What is the most beautiful and affordable city you’ve ever visited?
Robert: I still have to say the city I grew up in and still live just a few hours away from. It’s Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. I love the downtown inner harbor area and the breakwater walkway on the ocean where the Cruise Ships arrive and depart. A beautiful city, affordable for all types of travelers!
TA: Which underrated destination deserves to be more famous?
Robert: We’re planning an African Safari to Tanzania next season, as well as a visit to the beaches of Zanzibar. I think these areas deserve a lot more attention than just South Africa and Cape Town.
