The most beautiful time of year is about to bloom in our nation’s capital. The famous pink and white cherry trees around Washington, D.C. are about to show their full colors. The National Park Service (NPS) keeps track of the peak blooming period so you know the best time to visit.
Best Time For Blooms
Each year, the NPS projects the best times to see cherry blossoms. Horticulturists will watch how the buds are developing and forecast a bloom no more than 10 days out. The peak bloom is the day when 70 percent of the Yoshino cherry blossoms are open and typically happens the last week of March and the first week of April. This year, the NPS is predicting peak blooms from March 22 through March 25.
The weather has a big impact on the blooms. Unusually warm or cool temperatures have caused the peak bloom as early as March 15 in 1990 and as late as April 18 in 1958. It also plays a role in how long the bloom lasts. If the weather is cooler, the bloom will be longer, while high winds can cut them short, and if there’s a late frost, the trees may not bloom at all.
Where Are The Cherry Blossoms Located?
You can see the spectacular blooms in three national park areas in Washington, D.C. — around the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park, in East Potomac Park, and on the grounds of the Washington Monument.
What Days Are The Best To See Cherry Blossoms?
Any day between March 22 and March 25 is perfect to see the blooms. But there are a few things to keep in mind: There will be bigger crowds on the weekends, especially during the Cherry Blossom Festival, so you may want to visit during the week, in the morning, or in the late afternoon and early evening.
What Is The Cherry Blossom Festival?
The National Cherry Blossom Festival runs from March 20 through April 16 in Washington, D.C. It commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Japan. More than 1.5 million people come to enjoy the blooms, events, art, and culture during the 4-week festival. The festival is free, but there are a few events where you will need tickets.
How Can I See The Blooms From Home?
There are several ways you can see the cherry blossoms from the comfort of your home. The Trust for the National Mall and EarthCam teamed up to give you live views on its bloom cam.
You can also follow the Cherry Blossom Festival, National Mall, and Memorial Parks on social media to watch the flowering take place.
