If you’re looking for a relaxing, unique winter getaway, you might want to head to Punta de Mita, Mexico. This up-and-coming destination is about 60 miles northwest of Puerto Vallarta. The newly constructed Secrets Bahia Mita Surf & Spa Resort is the perfect all-inclusive resort for all types of travelers. It’s great for families and groups, active vacationers, and wellness retreats.
Here are seven reasons why you should consider Bahia Mita for your next trip.

1. Marietas Cabanas
If you’re looking for an extra splurge on your vacation, you can rent one of two private oceanfront cabanas. Anne Melchior — who I’ve been friends with since junior high — and her husband, Kevin, did just that on a recent vacation. This was their favorite part of the trip. The Marietas Cabanas have it all: private butler, fully stocked bar, jacuzzi, T.V., and two lounging Bali beds. A private chef grilled lobsters while we enjoyed a killer view of Banderas Bay.

2. Mexico’s Hidden Beach: Playa Del Amor
If you’re traveling to this area for any type of vacation, Love Beach is a must-see. This island is a 20-minute boat ride from Punta de Mita, yet the beach is only accessible by swimming through a water cave. Emerging to the other side, you will find white sands, beautiful vegetation, and blue-footed boobies along the heart-shaped rim opening. “This excursion was physically challenging, as you are swimming with a life-jacket and helmet approximately 300-500 yards each way, yet it was an experience you will never forget,” Anne Melchior shared.
Pro Tip: You can also choose from several additional excursions from Puerto Vallarta like ziplining, snorkeling, and private beach tours.

3. Rooftop Infinity Pool
The views from the rooftop infinity pool are breathtaking. “You will feel like you are the captain of the spaceship that is Bahia Mita from this top-floor pool, overlooking the entire resort that spills into Banderas Bay,” Anne Melchior commented.
Pro Tip: The resort also has five other pools, a swim-up bar, and two outdoor hot tubs.

4. The Rooms
The Melchiors did upgrade to a preferred club suite, which included two full rooms and two balconies, one with a bubble pool. However, all rooms at the resort provide complete privacy for seclusion and relaxation. “The rooms are soundproof, yes — I truly mean it — and there is a room service box that allows for delivery of room service and collection of trays without having to open your door or put on a robe,” Anne Melchior added
5. Whale Watching
From December through March, it’s possible to see five different species of whales and dolphins. Punta de Mita is located in Riviera Nayarit where these whales migrate back to the warm Pacific Ocean to mate, feed, or give birth. A typical tour can last up to 4 hours. Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau recommends a small boat whale tour. It allows you to get close to the whales without harming them.
6. The Dining
You are definitely not at a loss for dining options. You can choose from 13 onsite restaurants, 11 bars, and 24-hour room service. They have you covered from a quick bite to a romantic dinner and a late-night snack. You can enjoy a light lunch outside at Barefoot Grill or opt for French cuisine at Bordeaux. There are also plenty of options for seafood. Make sure to check with the restaurants to see if any have additional charges or if you need reservations.
“The Bahia Mita staff is so accommodating with requests, and you’ll find so many options. We highly recommend any dish with fresh tuna. I brought home a new favorite coffee drink, café de olla,” Anne Melchior said.
7. The Sunsets
Yes, this can be a no-brainer. However, the Melchiors said the sunsets in Bahia Mita are worth mentioning. They said these sunsets over the lush jungles that surround Bahia Mita lit up the sky in a blaze of colors.
Bonus: Secrets Spa By Pevonia
While the Melchiors opted out of the spa this trip, it is something that could add to a relaxing vacation. Secrets Spa by Pevonia offers couples’ massages as well as individual services in their 33,000-square-foot spa. For added stress relief, they have two hydrotherapy tubs, a recreational pool, and a plunge pool.
