New lodging inside Grand Canyon National Park doesn’t come along very often, but 120 new units have just become available only a 10-minute walk from the South Rim.
Maswik South Lodge is the first new lodging inside the park in more than 50 years. The lodge is a reconstruction of a previous facility, with Xanterra Travel Collection replacing the previous 90 units with 120 new, updated units.
Originally built in 1971, the new Maswik South Lodge features four two-story structures in the same general location, with 90 standard rooms and 30 kitchenette units.
Xanterra invested $35 million in the massive upgrade.
“Maswik South aims to prepare Grand Canyon National Park for the next 100 years,” Marc Ducharme, general manager of Grand Canyon South Rim, said in a release. “As stewards of the parks, Xanterra is proud to offer modernized lodging that will serve millions of visitors across its lifetime and enhance the national park experience.”

The lodge is spread over just under 5 acres of property. The rooms all have private balconies or patios, interior hallway entrances, and stairs and elevators are available for those on the second floor.
The interiors feature colors of the Grand Canyon, with rusty reds, sage green, tan, and ocher. And the rooms are decorated with textiles inspired by Native American artwork.

Kitchenette rooms feature an apartment-size refrigerator, microwave, and two-burner stove, but no ovens.
Designers modeled the new lodge in the spirit of the park’s original lodge built almost 100 years ago by the Fred Harvey Company and the Santa Fe Railroad. While the interiors are all new, architects preserved original stone pillars.
While it has a rustic look, the lodge couldn’t be any more modern. It was designed to LEED Gold standards and uses sustainable building materials, high-efficiency lighting, outdoor solar lighting, and other features that prove the project’s commitment to conservation.

The lodge is also dark-sky compliant to guarantee it does not interfere with those viewing the night skies at the Grand Canyon.
The lodge is located in close proximity to the main Maswik Lodge, where guests can catch the park shuttle as well as a food court, activities desk, and more.
