Had enough of the holidays? Need to get away? That is what Southwest Airlines is thinking as they are wasting no time in starting off 2021 with what they are calling a new “shiny” sale, offering fares as low as $29 one-way. The offer went up online Monday morning, January 4, and runs through Thursday, January 7.
Of course, the sale comes with a list of restrictions that we want to make sure you are aware of before you book.
All bookings must be made by 11:59 p.m. CST on January 7, 2021. All tickets must be purchased at least 21 days in advance.
All tickets are non-refundable, but if reservations are canceled at least 10 minutes before your scheduled departure, you will be able to apply your fare toward future travel on Southwest.
Okay, now when and where are the valid times and locations you can travel? The specials are good for travel within the Continental United States and Hawaii from January 26 through May 26. You can use the special fares to travel from the mainland to Hawaii and San Juan, Puerto Rico from January 25 to May 20, 2021.
As you might expect, the fine print is important, and make sure you keep blackout dates in mind. From a release from Southwest, we can tell you that travel from the U.S. mainland to Hawaii will be blacked out from February 11 to February 14, 2021, March 19 and 20, March 26 through March 28, and April 1 through April 3, 2021. Travel from Hawaii back to the U.S. mainland will be blacked out from Feb 19 through Feb 21, March 27 and 28th, and April 2 through April 4, 2021.
Where Are The $29 Fares?
If you’re someone who watches for Southwest’s sales, you have a general sense of the destination cities that see the low fares from your nearest airport and know that the lowest fares fall mid-week. That’s true with this sale as well, but we did find a few surprises. Check the deals from your departure city here and consider these examples of $29 fares:
- Atlanta and Raleigh/Durham
- Denver and Salt Lake City
- Phoenix and Palm Springs
- Dallas and New Orleans
- Nashville and Sarasota
- San Diego and Hawaii
In a statement to customers, Bill Tierney, Southwest Vice President of Marketing said, “Southwest is ready to take customers to their favorite spring travel destinations. Whether it is hitting the slopes or soaking up the sun on the beach, Southwest is your ticket to the perfect getaway.”
