Hiking boots. Sunglasses. Sunscreen. The most popular novel on the New York Times bestseller list. These are a few items that might come to mind while you’re packing for your next trip. But you might be forgetting an arguably essential item — a water purifier.
Though the phrase might conjure up the image of a large filter like what you find in a fridge, the CrazyCap is a completely portable water purifier that screws on to most reusable cola-style water bottles.
With the simple press of a button, you can sterilize water and make hydration possible virtually anywhere. The purification process kills 99.99 percent of germs that can cause waterborne illnesses. That means less time worrying about where you’re getting your water from and more time living in the moment.
Read on for a deep dive into the unique, high-tech design of the CrazyCap, plus why it belongs in your collection of travel gear.

Where You Go, The Cap Can Go
The CrazyCap is in it for the long haul. Since the cap fits most reusable cola-style bottles, odds are it can pair perfectly with your favorite bottle or one you buy along the way.
The sleek, lightweight cap, which screws onto your water bottle of choice, is slim enough to fit into anything from a suitcase to a purse or a carry on bag with ease. The cap and bottle duo can comfortably fit in your backpack or cupholder as well.
No matter where you are in the world, it’s likely you can use the water purifier to your advantage. The device can purify any debris-free water. That means you can purify water from seemingly more trustworthy sources, like the tap, or even water from exposed outdoor sources like freshwater ponds and lakes.
All you need to do is make sure the water is transparent, and you’re ready to sanitize! Just screw the lid on tight, and in two minutes or less, you have safe water no matter where you are.

You Can Purchase With Or Without The Bottle
Reusable cola-style water bottles are popular because they’re lightweight, stylish, and fit into almost any cupholder without hassle. They’re fit for road trips, long flights, camping, and everything in between.
If you already have a to-go bottle you love, you’re in luck because the CrazyCap is compatible with most cola-style bottles. That includes popular brands like S’well, Mira, Simple Modern, and plenty of others!
The CrazyCap fits most 9-, 12-, and 17-ounce bottles. The cap is 34 millimeters in diameter, so if you have a bottle of your own, make sure the mouth opening has a compatible diameter before deciding to buy the cap alone.
CrazyCap offers several cap and bottle duos for folks who want both. Their bottles keep cold drinks cold for 24 hours and hot drinks hot for 12. The bottles are made with stainless steel and food-grade, BPA-free materials. We personally love their teakwood and marble bottles, but if you’re looking for a solid color, CrazyCap has those, too!
CrazyCap also offers accessories including handles and carabiners — all of which are designed to make your travel bottle even more durable, portable, and easy to use.

You Can Purify Water In Just One Minute
To put your CrazyCap to good use, fill the bottle of your choice up with water, twist the cap on tight, and choose the best setting for your water source. Depending on where you’re getting your water from, sterilization takes place in either one minute or two.
Normal Mode sterilizes water in an impressive 60 seconds. This mode is designed for purifying water from the tap, public fountains, or other considerably reliable sources. To activate Normal Mode, double-tap the touch sensor on top of the cap. A blue LED ring indicates activation has begun. When the water is ready for consumption, the LED ring will glow green.
The second mode is called Crazy Mode. This mode is for water from ponds or lakes. To activate, press the sensor five times. A blue LED ring indicates that the water is in the process of being sterilized. When it’s done, the LED ring will glow green.
Normal Mode takes only 60 seconds, whereas Crazy Mode takes 120.
Within minutes, you have fresh, clean, perfectly drinkable water you can consume for up to seven days after initial sterilization.

The Cap Uses A High-Tech UV Light Process
Perhaps you’re wondering how such a complex process can occur in a small bottle cap. We were curious at first, too. The CrazyCap team has science and research to back up the design of the cap.
The purification process is all thanks to UV light. The CrazyCap utilizes deep UV-spectrum light to clean the water.
“This spectrum of light is found to have maximum disinfection capability,” according to CrazyCap. Using this form of UV light technology, the CrazyCap is able to effectively kill 99.99 percent of germs, including pathogens, bacteria, and viruses linked to waterborne illnesses.
CrazyCap compares the technology to boiling water, “an age-old technique which makes water safe for consumption.”
Keep in mind that in order for the CrazyCap to work wonders, the water must be transparent and free of debris. The UV light can’t remove particulate matter, chemicals, or debris left in water sources. That means some water sources are better than others. CrazyCaps recommends choosing water from a waterfall or river over a stagnant pool if possible. Also keep in mind that “CrazyCap does not work as a filter — so straining the water never hurts if you are somewhere where there is particulate matter.”
The CrazyCap Can Sanitize More Than Water
As if the CrazyCap wasn’t cool enough as is, you can actually use the deep UV light in the cap to sanitize elsewhere, too!
In order to sanitize surfaces, it’s recommended that you shine the UV light four inches from the intended surface. Turn on Crazy Mode and give the UV light 120 seconds to kill germs on the surface. Using this feature, you can expose up to 10 inches of surface area to powerful UV light.
The CrazyCap’s surface sanitation method can kill up to 99 percent of germs. This feature will prove to be helpful in hotel rooms, campsites, and any other area you want to sanitize quickly and effectively. The feature works especially well when it comes to sterilizing non-porous surfaces such as doorknobs, computers, and other tech devices!
The Cap Will Actually Clean Itself
We’ve all had the unfortunate displeasure of dealing with a stinky reusable water bottle. It doesn’t matter how many times you scrub, the bottle getting gross over time seems inevitable. And if you’re traveling with a reusable bottle, there are few things worse than having to choose between musty water or no water at all.
Unlike its competitors, the CrazyCap actually cleans itself and your bottle for you. The cap turns on once every four hours for 20 seconds. During this period of time, the cap sterilizes the interior of the bottle using the same UV light that sanitizes your water. This self-cleaning mode prevents bacteria, pathogens, and other no-no’s from growing in the bottle, leaving behind an unsavory taste.
The self-cleaning function also minimizes bottle odor so each sip of water is fresh, tasty, and rejuvenating.

Charging Only Takes A Few Hours
With a bottle cap this high-tech, it makes sense that you’ll need to charge it every now and then. Like the rest of the design, charging is simple and straightforward.
When your CrazyCap arrives in the mail, it comes with a portless USB charging cable. Place the charger atop the cap. In four hours or less, your cap will be charged and ready to purify various water sources.
If you want to stay on top of the cap’s battery life, you can quickly check the battery level by tapping the touch sensor. An indicator light will flash green, orange, or red. Green means the battery is over 50 percent, orange means the battery is between 49 and 25 percent, and red means the battery has less than a 25 percent charge remaining.
Depending on your access to wall outlets, it might be helpful to power up before embarking on your adventure so you can count on several rounds of cleaning and self-cleaning without the cap powering down.
With Each Purchase, You’re Giving Back
With each purchase, five percent of CrazyCap’s proceeds go to water.org, a nonprofit organization striving to make water more accessible around the globe. Each purchase will help those in need gain access to clean, drinkable water.
A water purifier adds assurance you’ll stay hydrated during your next vacation. That’s important no matter where you’re going or what you’re doing, and it’s essential if you’re hiking, camping, or exploring abroad. Ready to shop CrazyCap’s lineup? See all their caps, bottles, and accessories here.
