For the 50+ Traveler

Angelo and Lori are both baby boomers, though Lori falls more on the Boomer/Gen X cusp. They've been traveling together for the better part of 30 years, and started their blog Travlinmad first as a photography outlet and to stay in touch with family and kids while on the road. Their blog has grown a great deal from their early travels, and today coincides more with their interest of highlighting the local food culture they find around the world.

Angelo and Lori Sorrentino were kind enough to answer a few of our travel questions below.

Lori and Angelo.

TA: How many years have you been traveling and what got you hooked?

Lori & Angelo: We've been traveling together for over 30 years, and thankfully have similar travel styles. We both grew up in Italian-American households eating good food, and I think what really got us hooked on traveling was discovering really good food at the source, whether it was cheesesteaks in Philly or pizza in Italy!

TA: Do you specialize in a particular type of travel?

Lori & Angelo: Foodie travel is a big part of what we do, and we love finding experiences that involve local food and wine experiences. But we also love exploring off-the-beaten-path spots to eat and explore wherever we go.

TA: What is the best vacation you've ever taken?

Lori & Angelo: That's a lot like asking which of our children we love the best! But one of our most memorable trips was our first trip to Italy. We visited southern Italy near Naples, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast, and even visited the small town where my grandfather was born. It was such a special experience!

TA: What's one place you've always wanted to visit?

Lori & Angelo: Morocco, and it's on our short list for 2019!

TA: What's one thing you ALWAYS pack when you travel?

Lori & Angelo: Power blocks. I'm always juggling between taking photos on my DSLR and shooting video on my iPhone, and extra power toward the end of the day always helps.

TA: If you could only give a traveler one piece of advice, what would it be?

Lori & Angelo: Be flexible. Traveling is stressful. And when things go awry (and they eventually will), it helps to have a flexible schedule and attitude to match, so your entire trip isn't marred by one or two bad experiences.

TA: What are some of your favorite travel blogs and communities?

Lori & Angelo: I love many different travel blogs for different reasons: for example if I'm searching for family travel tips I love Travel Babbo. Pinterest is also a terrific community for travel lovers. It's a great resource for specific types of travel like foodie travel or finding unique places to stay.

TA: What would be your #1 recommendation for a place to travel in 2019?

Lori & Angelo: Central Europe including Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia.

TA: What are the top 3 websites you use for research/inspiration when planning a trip?

Lori & Angelo: Pinterest, Instagram, and Fodors travel forum.

TA: Is there something you think most travelers worry too much about?

Lori & Angelo: Getting sick when traveling. State Department and CDC travel warnings should be heeded but put in the proper context. Always get the proper immunizations for your destination. But for every day travel, a simple bottle of hand sanitizer and bottled water should suffice to avoid travel bugs and colds.

TA: What's something that other tourists do when traveling that drives you crazy and why?

Lori & Angelo: Bringing expectations of your home to a foreign destination. In general, travelers "travel" to seek out new and unfamiliar places. Getting outside your comfort zone can be one of the most exciting experiences of your life if you let it, and builds confidence. So keep in mind that even the smallest things may be unique and different as you travel to other countries, like fast food, public restrooms, and everyday customs and greetings. It's all part of the journey.

TA: Which underrated destination deserves to be more famous?

Lori & Angelo: Bologna, Italy. Sandwiched between Venice and Florence, Bologna is just an hour from both destinations and often gets overlooked. If you love vibrant Italian cities, charming hilltop towns, and some of the best Italian food in the country, Bologna deserves a visit.
