For the 50+ Traveler

Born in London, and raised in a travel-loving family, Kavey has been a huge lover of travel her whole life. She has spent the last 26 years exploring with husband and perfect travel companion, Pete. She started her blog Kavey Eats back in 2009, with mostly food content and a little travel. These days, the travel has become more dominant, as she loves to write and share all about their trips. Both of Kavey and Pete are enthusiastic photographers, so their writing is always well-illustrated. The travel content is balanced by recipes and restaurant reviews.

Kavey was kind enough to spend time with us answering the questions below.

TA: How many years have you been traveling and what got you hooked?

Kavey: I've been travelling for almost half a century, my first trip was when I was just a few months old and I grew up in a travel-loving family. Learning to love travel was as much a part of how my parents raised me as as much as learning to walk, read and write!

TA: Do you specialize in a particular type of travel?

Kavey: We love independent travel focused on culture and food. That's echoed in my blog content, where I publish detail-rich articles with a strong focus on seeking out the best life experiences. I love to write about culture, cuisine and history as well as what to see, what to do, and where to stay.

TA: What is the best vacation you've ever taken?

Kavey: Hard to choose just one, so I'm going to cheat and give you a top 3!

1) Antarctica! We have taken two trips to this part of the world, both including the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. The remoteness, pristine wilderness, stunning scenery and amazing wildlife are all big draws.

2) Japan! Our first visit was only a few years ago but we've already visited three times and I'm pretty much constantly plotting future trips to see more. We love the culture, scenery, food and people of Japan and I confess to being a little obsessed with the next trip!

3) Botswana! We are huge lovers of wildlife travel, and an African safari is the epitome. Botswana's Okavango Delta offers such a beautiful environment, and the wildlife viewing is absolutely fantastic. Combined with small-scale camps and top quality guiding, it's our favourite safari destination.

TA: What's one place you've always wanted to visit?

Kavey: Vietnam! But again, if you saw how long my full bucketlist is, you'd see I need another two centuries to manage it all!

TA: What's one thing you ALWAYS pack when you travel?

Kavey: My camera!

TA: If you could only give a traveler one piece of advice, what would it be?

Kavey: By all means gather ideas from fellow travellers (including us bloggers) but always filter these against your own interests and travel style, and never feel guilty if you decide that someone else's must do isn't your own.

What would be your #1 recommendation for a place to travel in 2019?

Kavey: Japan! Endlessly fascinating -- culturally, visually, in its cuisine.

TA: Do you have any good airport or flight hacks for people traveling by plane?

Kavey: For me it's about having lots of content loaded onto my e-book and some power banks to keep the charge topped up. Give me a good book and I'll be distracted for hours, but as I read fast, a decent library is essential.

TA: Is there something you think most travelers worry too much about?

Kavey: Their wardrobe! I'm not a fan of the current trend for fashion-driven selfies where the clothes seem more important than the view of the destination itself!

Which country has surprisingly good food? (And what are some good things to eat there?)

Kavey: I'm coming back to Japan, but if I tried to list them all, that would be a whole blog post in itself!

TA: What was the most romantic place you ever visited with a partner?

Kavey: On our tenth anniversary, we renewed our wedding vows in Namibia's Namib Rand Desert, a place we'd fallen in love with on a previous visit. It's a stunning place and I hope we make it back again soon. But if you travel with someone compatible, pretty much all trips have their romantic moments and places!

What is the most beautiful and affordable city you've ever visited? (Any specific locations people need to see there?)

Kavey: Most beautiful and most affordable don't often coincide. Venice remains a stunner, even with the increased crowds now compared to our first visit two decades ago, but it's darn expensive. Bangkok is cheap, exciting and full of things to see, eat and do, but I'd never describe it as beautiful!

TA: What's something that other tourists do when traveling that drives you crazy and why?

Kavey: Disrespect local culture and people, or be selfish or rude to other travellers.

Which underrated destination deserves to be more famous? Please explain why.

Kavey: Namibia, it's a beautiful country, easy to visit, and I'm always surprised it's not on more peoples' bucketlists!
