Roughly 71% of the planet is covered in water. Out of all the places in the world to sail, we’ve narrowed it down to the top 5 sailing hot spots.
1. Newport, Rhode Island
This entry on the list might come as no surprise to sailing aficionados who recognize Newport, Rhode Island as one of the most superior yachting centers in all of America. Labeled the “Sailing Capital of the World,” Newport offers visitors breathtaking beaches and a charm that is distinct to New Englanders.
Such a reputation as a sailing destination comes certain perks others destinations don’t have. For example, beaches like Third Beach Newport make it easier than ever to park and launch your boat. This allows you to waste no time at all getting out on the water.
Make sure to check out the famed Newport mansions while you’re in the area. Some of the most notable include The Breakers, The Elms, and Marble House. Many of the mansions can, of course, be traveled to by water.

2. French Polynesia
French Polynesia might not sound familiar to you, but when we break it up into the four individual groups of islands that make it up, you’ll start to recognize names like Tahiti, Bora-Bora, Moorea, Raiatea, and Tahaa.
What all of these islands have in common is absolutely paradisaic conditions and gorgeous shorelines waiting to be explored. These islands are spread across 770 miles of South Pacific ocean. Here you’ll find one tropical lagoon after another, along with an abundance of marine life sharing the waters.
You’ll find white and black sandy beaches, waterfalls, and volcanic peaks along your journeys. This is truly a special place with a rare collection of natural wonders not usually seen in the same place.

3. Croatia
Croatia has become a more popular destination in recent years. Perhaps some of this fame results from Game of Thrones being filmed there.
There are lots of things to see and do on land in Croatia. But more important for sailing enthusiasts, there are also a whole host of things to do on the water with over 1,100 miles of coastline to explore. There is no shortage of independent islands either as they number nearly 1,200 strong. For each of those islands, imagine a picturesque beach just waiting for you to sprawl upon and soak up the sun.
Fishing is a big pastime for Croatians. If you fancy yourself a fisher, check out popular spots like Kornati and Elfati. If you’re searching for fellow boaters to share a dock with, Hvar is known as the yachting harbor.
Medieval architecture and extensive museums await should you decide to travel inland, although we wouldn’t blame you if you spend most of your time on the water!

4. Catalina Island, California
Not only is there good surfing to be found in California, but there’s great boating, especially around Catalina Island.
The water is crystal clear, and that allows seafarers to see the diverse aquatic life and shipwrecks beneath the surface. Bring the scuba or snorkeling gear along to do some further exploration, or charter a boat that offers a guided tour. If you don’t necessarily feel like immersing yourself, you can also choose a boat that offers a glass floor for superior viewing.
Check out Two Harbors while you’re in the area. It’s a popular sailing community with a lot of space for tying up the boat while you go for a meal in the quaint village.

5. The Grenadines
Sailors know that the water and the surrounding conditions often determine the quality of the spot, and the Grenadines are aces in both of those categories. With 60 miles of southern Caribbean splendor, the “Spice Islands” as they’re referred to is made up of 32 individual islands. Sail the reefs and visit popular yacht spots lie Bequia or Princess Margaret Beach.
Your next vacay on the water will be a full one if you choose the Grenadines because you’ll not only have beautiful scenery to explore but also some of the friendliest people you’ll meet while abroad.
The type of boat you choose to charter will obviously depend on your budget, but there are lots of options to choose from in Port Elizabeth and other harbors.
Are you in the mood for a boat ride all of a sudden? We don’t blame you! There’s nothing quite like sailing the high tides, and the tides in these locations are practically calling your name. The best part is that there’s just as much to do on land at each of these destinations as there is at sea, so we know you’ll have a fun-filled time wherever you choose to travel to first.
